FIFA Plans New Transfer System

FIFA working on new transfer system which cuts greedy agents out of the picture

FIFA are planning to revolutionise the way clubs conduct transfers to help them avoid using agents.

These intermediaries took commissions on average worth 28 per cent of cross-border transfers.

The world football governing body are trying to develop a system which would let football teams deal directly with each other, rather than using agents.

A new system would also help clubs alert other teams to which players are available to sign.

Teams have told FIFA they 'often have to rely on intermediaries, thus increasing club costs.'

'This will revolutionise the international and national transfer system,' said Jacques Anouma, chairman of the FIFA Club Football Committee.

FIFA aims to offer clubs a paid-for service, called the Global Player Exchange. National associations will also be invited to subscribe.

'These new optional services will have the same core aim of improving transparency,' FIFA said in a statement.

'Subscribing clubs will be able to access market information and interact with each other.'

FIFA are also planning rules to limit third-party investments in players’ transfer rights.

In March they will publish details in March of last year’s international transfer business, which was worth more than $3 billion in 2011.

The organisation's online transfer booking service approved 11,555 international signings in 2012, where players moved between clubs in different countries, a decrease of 1 per cent from the previous year.

So instead of paying agents, they'd just end up paying Fifa?

I wonder why they like that idea..

I'm guessing the percentage will be a lot lower.

What players need is some legal advice for contracts. A system like this where players can be made available to other clubs without having an agent calling all his manager chums would be a step in the right direction IMO.

Paul Scholes used to have just a legal representative, rather than an agent, IIRC.

They will still need agents. Top footballers still need representation, Agents don't just deal with transfers.

And as has been said, seems like FIFA want a cut of the pie.

My guess is that, rather than agents who represent players, the kind of agents FIFA are targeting are those that facilitate transfers. Cutting out the middle man.

Almost certainly.

Edit: Or rather inserting themselves as the middle man instead. But if it's a middle man that charges less and provides a better service I think that's beneficial to the clubs.

PR will probably always have a role. Cutting the flow of money out of football is certainly a great idea, things like the Argentinian system where different people 'own' a player are best consigned to history. Agents will still continue their PR responsibilities as I'm sure FIFA don't want to handle Ryan Giggs Quorn adverts circa 1995

Positive news from FIFA. Hope they can implement it

Absolutely to this too!

Exactly. My first thought too.

It's a good idea except for the involvement of FIFA. Agents would still have a role in representing players interests but they wouldn't have the conflict of interests in representing clubs as well. And hopefully we'd see the end of superagents who stir up interest independent of club and player and then bring them together.

One problem is that it may not fit with how the transfer system works. Clubs don't have simple lists of players they want to keep and sell. Instead it is less black and white with players they are happy to keep but willing to sell for good money. If the put these players on a list, it will get back to the player and fans, which is not conducive of a happy team.

It won't work.
The agents and the chairmen are in cahoots. If they ain't then they should be.

I think the chairmen work with the agents because they have to. If you think they are happy handing 28% of transfer fees to third parties I think you're wrong.

Would rather see FIFA involved than the agents and, as you describe them, superagents. FIFA do quite a few things quite well.

I don't think it would boil down to simple lists like that for most players. We already have a "transfer list", although it's hardly a specific list, making that a list of players that all clubs have access to instead of having hundreds of agents swarming around telling clubs about those players seems like a decent idea.

It can't work without a complete inquiry/investigation as to why agents are such a prominent part of transfers. There are too many factoring parties in cahoots, there is widespread corruption and there are a lot of people making a LOT of money globally who are now too powerful to mess with.

And of course, if someone with the power and money wants to veto this, they just need to slip a little brown envelope to the current powers-that-be at FIFA to ensure this doesn't go through. Allegedly...
