Euro 2020

Uefa will stage the Euro 2020 tournament in a number of cities across the continent, the European governing body decided on Thursday.

The decision was taken by Uefa's executive committee at a meeting in Lausanne.

It means there will be no one country hosting the tournament. The Football Association has already put forward Wembley to Uefa as a possible venue for the fina

In theory it sounds like a good idea, whilst in fact it will just be a logistical nightmare.

The only way I can think they could do it is to pick a different stadium for each group, a through g or whatever it is. Even then the amount of traveling required for the teams in the knock out rounds will be huge, leading to enormous costs for supporters.

.

Agreed, and it will end in farce !

A pathetic idea, but it's Platini so there's no surprise. Add the equally farcical decision to award Qatar a world cup...and the only conclusion is that world/european football is run by idiots, but we all knew that anyway.

Think it is a shame because it dilutes the event. When it was held in one country it really was lovely for that country and fans from all over the country got to watch the football and feel a part of it. Now it will only go to capital cities or "fashionable" cities like barcelona and milan.

This totally. We remember a competition because of the country it was played in. I think its a terrible idea.

Agree with this.

I've only been to one tournament (Portugal 2004) but the best thing I remember is the daytime atmosphere of fans from all of the competing nations, building up to the evenings when everyone would watch the games in the local bars / cafes - plus the fact it always went fever pitch when Portugal were playing.

It seems this festival spirit will be lost.

it used to be like this, it'll work

But the European Championship wasn't considered a major tournament back then. Now as an event it is nearly as big an occasion as the World Cup.

One difference between the new version and the old version is the timing. The early rounds used to be scattered through the year and only the final four in the summer. If each group is focused on a city or two close ones (e.g. Manchester-Liverpool) and the final eight knockout rounds located in one country or close together cities it could be more intimate for fans than the Poland-Ukraine one which was spread over a vast distance.

When do they (or have they decided to) expand to 24 teams?

Could work if they pair up two and two cities that are close to each other for the group games.

Honestly, UEFA have fudging lost the plot. Utter arseholes.

I better get myself to France in 2016 then, because I'll never be able to go to a proper European Championships after that. Who can afford to travel to different countries to watch football in such a short space of time? you lose all the atmosphere and festival feeling it brings as well. Utter flimflam IMO, might as well just call it the Champions League and be done with it.

Its all about the money, stuff having 30k stadiums when they can cherry pick the largest and most lucrative stadiums from across europe.

I dont think UEFA expect people to go to all the games ;)
Any last time out it was 1046 miles between the furthest away venues.
All of western Europe is well within that for London for instance.

At next world cup in Brazil the two furthest venues are nearly 2000 miles apart.

I dont really see what the problem is.

Ive huge issue with how theyre gonna stop a 24 team comp being a borefest in the earlier stages though.

Do you really believe that?

Lets just saddle host nations with more debt so that the happy multinational corporations can continue to line their coffers with exorbitant prices. Take from the future generation so that you can get your kicks NOW. Splendid idea

Expanding to 24 has in some ways led to this decision. How many countries can host the tournament alone? Germany, Italy, Spain, England France and Russia. I'm not sure Portugal could manage the expanded competition. UEFA don't like the large country FA's being to dominant, let alone of England hostng every 20/24 years, so need a way of spreading the competition. They've tried co-hosting but that means that they need to let in several host nations as top seeds.

Perhaps a better compromise would be to allow bids of single countries or geographical groups of cities within a certain distance (e.g. within say 200km of a central city). In doing so you could expand the range of potential host areas and keep it intimate for fans. Cities from Holland and Belgium could get together with cities in northern France (e.g Lille, Metz) or western Germany (Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Cologne). The Scandanavian countries could get together and create a local tournament based on Oslo, Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Malmo (perhaps going as far south as Hamburg). The cities of the Baltic countries could get together with counties to the south (Greece), East (Bulgaria, Romania) or north (Hungary). Or Vienna, Prague, Bratislava, Budapest and Zagrab are all within easy travelling distance. Many of these arrangements would be more compact than a tournament in France or Germany. Most of these countries are (or will be) within the Schengen Area so travel across borders would not be a problem. If it was based on cities then you wouldn't need to invite the hosts, although perhaps favourable seeding in the qualifying rounds could give them a better chance.

Well there's your problem right there.

There was nothing wrong with the old format of 16 Finalists, so why on Earth did UEFA see fit to change it?

We will now have two weeks of utterly meaningless competition while the dross is eliminated.

Well done UEFA, you've managed to ruin what was a fantastic tournament. The Euros are better than the World Cup (IMO), as the talent is much more condensed. Now, it may as well be a club competition how it will be played across the entire continent. What a joke.

UEFA are a bunch of money-grabbing ****s

I really don't get the anger towards UEFA in this one. UEFA and FIFA are surely a gang of corrupt fools, but when it comes the EUROs I think we have reached a point where the member countries have realised that the cost of hosting the competition far outweighs the benefits. I would be very unhappy if my taxes were spent on a spectacle with no other motive than entertainment, while at the same time ignoring the countless problems set to face us in the coming years.

As for the increase from 16 to 24 that surely is to line the UEFA honchos (sp?) coffers.
