The Official Olympic Thread

Lol. How many people practice Judo globally? Winning a judo medal is infinitely more impressive than being in a team who wins the League Cup. There are 2000+ pro footballers in the UK alone. Only one global champion in Judo and other 'sports no oe plays' Pretty arrogant and I'll informed comments IMO.

Football is entertainment. Just because other sports are less TV friendly, it doesn't make their achievements any less worthy. The standard of the athletes at Olympic level is extremely high.

Well put it this way, you play for Spurs and you are a rich man and possibly well known all around the world.

You come 3rd in Judo and you have 5 minutes of fame in your own country. These sports that barely anyone takes seriously, you have to be the best for it to be impressive. No one sees losing in the semi final of a football cup as impressive.

Narrow minded much?

So finishing 4th is wonderful but finishing 3rd isn't worth brick? :-k

Its all relative. What we achieved considering the competition for that 4th spot was like GOLD. In those last 6 games, we played the three mentioned above and Utd. We overcame the odds.
If this is the only medal Daley ever achieves in Olympic competition, would this count as success? Beijing was the warm up, wasnt London the main event for him to become a star.

How is it arrogant? I'm not a footballer or involved in any sport.

You back up my point. So many pro footballers, such a competitive sport. Coming 4th in the league is a nice achievement.

Very few try and be that good at judo. If it was something the whole world cares about like football, then maybe 3rd would be good. Gold is a great achievement. Runner up is nice. Bronze? Seriously 9 times out of 10 no one cares or remembers you in these sports.

But that's just my opinion. It's just how I view a bronze medal now, and if I was competing. If you see it differently, good for you. I doubt you'd go along to meet the sailing bronze medalist though.

No. You don't care about bronze medalists and neither do I.

Since when has coming 3rd been good. It has always been about the winners. Even a popular sport like tennis, I doubt Fed will care about his silver medal.

I don't know why people are pretending they care about this. I know they don't.

Daley will only be seen as a success due to the media dictating the agenda. Sunday morning he was on the BBC settee where I found myself switching channels
to watch Dinner Date on ITV. I found this more real!

I dont back up your point at all.......

Daley is oustanding and the fact he is where he is at 18 is outstanding......he can't help the fact his personal story is compelling.

Regardless - to sit on an internet forum having achieved nada in our lives apart from being champion tossers and slagging someones world class achievement is hilarious IMO

Yes - you know what everyone thinks and feels.......

Silver is the first loser. As Wiggins said "what's the point in having seven medals if they're the wrong colour"? Too right.

For someone who may be expected to come 6th/7th to get a medal, then they might be very happy to achieve such an honour. But for the top sportsmen who are predicted to be in amongst the medals, winning should be the only judge of success.

That's why, IMO, the American medal table is a load of gonad*s. A nation should be decided on what they win first of all.

So you wouldn't be proud of being the 2nd best at something in the world?

Sport is about personal bests, doing the best you can.

Winning is important but not everything IMO.

That's why we support Spurs!! :)

That would depend on hat stature I was. Going into the tournament and being written off for medals, second would be a good achievement (but you still haven't won anything). But if you were one of the top three in the world, then I doubt you would be very happy.

Of course, sport isn't all about winning - at grassroots it is about development of character and having fun. But at the top level, even though the element of fun may still be there, it's about winning.

tonight's finale revealed...

Boris Johnson cracks me up

He just told the interviewer he prefers wheelchair basketball to normal basketball, because its far more violent

Why is Jon Snow dressed like a retired doctor.

CH4 is FAIL imo.. BBC should be covering this, and bringing it to a wider audience worldwide. Poor decision whoever made that, although nice to see that Clare Balding having made the switch to Channel 4 racing as the front of it, is also doing the Paralympics on the same channel
