New Stadium and Training Ground - Pg 104 Northumberland Park master plan

Its a chamber where they fiddle with the air pressure.

I dont know the technicality of it but I think by providing an oxygen rich environment it can aid recovery times etc.

They also use altitude chambers to condition astronaughts and deep sea divers etc...

Most endurance/stamina sports use altitude training. At high altitudes you get lower barometric pressure and less oxygen. This causes the body to produce more red blood cells.

An altitude room would have lower pressure and lower oxygen. This causes the body to increase the number of red blood cells and boost aerobic capacity, which is why athletes go to altitude training camps. It also works when the hypoxia is intermittent, so a few hours a day would boost performance on the pitch.

The same effect can be attained by taking EPO but that is illegal doping.

Edit: Too slow, Jordinho beat me to it.

Yeah, effective enough that some sports (at least cross country skiing) have considered banning them in the past.

It's a form of natural doping if you like. I do believe they have to stay within certain limits to be allowed to compete.

Yes. Although the limits are not as much because it's seen as doping, but rather because very high levels of red blood cells can be dangerous. I think. Not sure.

When some of the cyclists used EPO their blood cell count got so high that the blood became dangerously viscous. They had to get up several times a night and use an exercise bike to stop their blood clotting and killing them. Quite a few died in their sleep.

I very much doubt that the hypobaric chambers can get the blood cell count up that high to be dangerous. It will be more akin to altitude training which most of the long-distance runners going to the Olympics are probably finishing just now.

NEW TRAINING CENTRE UPDATE

Following a site inspection today, we have decided that the main move to the new Training Centre will take place during the international break in September.

Inclement weather for the past three months, whilst perfect for the pitches, has resulted in rescheduled public infrastructure works, utility supplies and final surface finishes around the Training Centre.

They can't really help the weather.

but they were all ready to move in this week, and now more delays:-s

I'd usually think bad weather was a lousy excuse, but in this instance the rain the last few months has indeed been freakish. Must make an absolute balls of a building site.

The London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham has granted full planning approval for the expansion of Fulham Football Club's Craven Cottage ground by 4,300 seats.

Craven Cottage currently accommodates 25,700 fans but can now expand to 30,000 seats following the approval last night.

Under the plans, the Riverside Stand, nearest to the Thames, would be partially demolished and extended to include a new upper tier that is intended to wrap around the existing stand and create new hospitality space, a new riverside facade, new roof and four residential units.

Along with this, the planning consent allows for the partial demolition and rebuild of the western ends of the Putney and Hammersmith stands, including installation of new seats and the removal of two floodlight masts.

The planning application also includes plans for a riverside walk along the Thames which would be opened up on non-match days.

According to Hammersmith & Fulham Council, Fulham FC will make a £600,000 contribution for the restoration of Bishops Park, plus an annual contribution of £40,000 per year for 10 years for on-going maintenance of the park and pay £60,000 to install heritage gates at the Stevenage Road entrance to Bishops Park.

Fulham FC will also make a series of payments to improve signage, CCTV, and pedestrian and road safety measures in the area, as part of the planning consent, the council added.

Nicholas Botterill, council leader, said: "Craven Cottage is the historic home of Fulham Football Club and this modest expansion, which will be carried out in a sensitive and sensible way, will allow the club to remain competitive in the top tier of English football while removing the existing, rather ugly, Riverside Stand. Our residents will also enjoy a series of community benefits such as an opened up river walk and improvements at Bishops Park.

The council said it received 600 representations to its consultation on the proposals with 453 in support of the development, 145 against and 2 with no comments.
