Christian Eriksen

Conte prefers not to play with an ACM, so there isn't particularly space in our midfield for his type of player. Maybe he could be an option at RWF, but he is a square peg for our system; hence why I think we're pretty lukewarm on him.

He played him at inter. Paratici tried to get him at juve. We've had contact. So there is interest. Just how far we are willing to go in comparrison to other teams.

Maybe he’s not keen on the beat the first man on corners clause we’ve insisted on being part of his contract?
many corners taken by many players don’t beat the first man (count how many Moura or Kane head away for us for example)…. That is because the most likely way to score from a corner is with a near post header. The difference delivering a ball to that position and hitting the first man is marginal. Near post corners are also less likely to result in a breakaway goal for the opposition, which is very much a danger when delivering balls into the centre of the box.

This complaint really annoys me when I hear it. If Eriksen or any other player wanted to just kick it over the head of the lad at the front post, they could easily do it. They are trying to whip a ball in at pace and at a height where someone around the goal can get their head on the ball. It's a very difficult skill but you hear so many complaining about it that you'd think the lads taking corners are incapable of kicking the ball in the air.

I remember Laurent Robert was a master at the whipped near post corner. It is a difficult skill to consistently get right.

Spot on. I'll add that this is a relatively modern requirement, something I've put down to the lightness of modern football's and the amount of whip and action you can get on the ball. Maybe it's my memory failing but corners used to be either a fairly straight forward 9 iron or hard and driven. The technique now expected is as you say a very difficult skill.

Don't forget the classic Anderton to Sheringham for a difficult volley. Stunning when it worked, which I don't think was all that often.

Yep very difficult skill because the sweet danger spot is a very small area. Also even if you manage to hit that spot, lots more need to align - blockers have to effectively block their man, and then the runners have to time their runs to get to that near post ahead of the near post defender. A fraction late and suddenly the perfect ball is "can't beat the first man"

@DeanoAustin Is right and it is a difficult skill. But it’s all well and good making excuses for his corner taking, plenty of players with lesser ability have proven capable of putting in a decent corner more often so there’s no reason one of the most technically gifted players I’ve seen in a Spurs shirt shouldn’t be capable of doing so with at the very least a little more consistency than he currently does….

I don't think it's quite as simple as that. Perhaps Poch, aware of Eriksen's abilities, was effectively challenging him to deliver a ball that'd come off 20% of the time (by which I mean hit the head of our man on the near post), resulting in a goal for 25% of the successful opportunities, for an overall corner success rate of 5%. I'm completely making up the numbers here.

Whereas an easier standard delivery flighted into the danger zone might work 60% of the time, but with a conversion rate of only 5%. That's a 3% overall success rate.

Bear in mind that, at least under Poch, we didn't have too many dominant goal threats from corners. Perhaps he was making the most of what we had by instructing Eriksen to stick to a low percentage plan.

Someone earlier pointed out that a ball flighted into the middle of the box would also result in a counter-attacking opportunity more of the time -- rather than one of Eriksen's typically being headed out for another corner. That's got to be factored in too.

While I don't disagree that he probably should have done better I think Fatbloke might be onto something in terms of what he was being asked to do with corners under Poch, his corners for Brentford were way better than at Spurs and I doubt dying and coming back to life is the reason. From what I can recall I don't think his corners v Spurs were being directed near post.

Fat bloke is more than onto something. I'm certain, as are a few others thankfully ( well done Finney is back , Deano Austin + others) that Eriksen was aiming for the tiny near post area as we were no threat at all if he just hung up corners to the middle of the goal or back stick. Hes hanging them up for Brentford because they still are a huge threat when he does that , we were not ( still aren't).
Amazed that so many of you actually believe that those corners weren't deliberate and Eriksen was actually trying to get the ball yards higher and ten or twenty yards deeper. He can hit seventy yard passes and drop them on a sixpence but can't take a corner to save his life? Get real.

It didn't work though. Which was the problem.
