New performance director, via Everton

Tottenham Hotspur have moved to strengthen their backroom operation before the new season by appointing Gretar Steinsson to a new role as performance director, The Athletic has learned.

The former Bolton Wanderers defender was head of recruitment and development at Everton until his exit in December after three years in the position.

Steinsson is expected to have a wide remit across senior and youth levels at the north London club and work closely with managing director of football Fabio Paratici.

The 40-year-old was second in command to Everton’s then director of football Marcel Brands by the time he left, having joined them in 2018 as chief European scout. That followed almost four years as technical director at Fleetwood Town.

Ex-Iceland international Steinsson has a strong reputation in the game and will bolster the Spurs set-up following Steve Hitchen’s departure from the job of technical performance director.

They are also believed to be close to appointing former Emirates Marketing Project and Anderlecht coach Simon Davies to a senior post in their academy.

The former Manchester United midfielder, 48, is well regarded having held a number of prominent titles in City’s youth system before moving to Belgium in 2019 alongside Vincent Kompany.

At Tottenham it is understood the will become head of methodology and that would see the Welshman support academy manager Dean Rastrick and head of coaching Chris Powell.

Sounded like a star of an Ingmar Bergman film in the 60s

I'd love to get a proper insight into the fall, and fall of Bitchen Hitchen.

He looked like he was a complete fish out of water in the mourinho documentary. (sic)

Wtf does a “Performance Director” do? And “Head of Methodology”?

genuine question……I really don’t know and I am genuinely curious.

Think the methodology one ensures that the academy teams play in the same way as the first team. Ensuring an easy transition from youth to first team. Think ally gold said something about it on his last vid. But i might have it wrong.

Steinsson working on recruitment, in part replacing Hitchen. First team and academy. Think I read somewhere that he won't be involved directly in final decisions, so more of a scouting/head scout type role? Performance director, working on getting the information available to maximise the chances of new signings performing for us?

Davies in a way taking Mason's old role, working on the link between the academy and first team. Player development type role. So methodology would be the methodology used to make academy players better and better suited to our first team?
