Transfer thread

Moura much better hugging the touchline. Why doesn't Conte consider him for wingback?
Because thevWB role requires defensive positioning as well as attacking threat. I imagine Moura doesn't have that, well we've never seen it at the least. Also Moura is erratic in his movements, trying to beat 3 men is fine in the final third, it's also ok in the middle of the park but would be a disaster in the defensive third. If we imagine you for him to stop doing that then you'd lose 90% of what makes Moura, Moura.

WB is a specialist role and not just any player is suited to it.

100%
We can tolerate his wayward play if it doesn’t hurt us. Hell sometimes it can be bloody effective but at RWB he would need discipline and the ability to keep the ball which he really struggles with

Remember when we had Atouba and he would do that…. He had so much technical ability, I remember he would wind up opposition strikers including notably Kevin Phillips

Really?
Granted the chance he set up for harry made no difference because of the pen, but he created a couple of really good chances for us.

Ive not seen it back as they concentrated on the handball after, but on first viewing I thought after a good run it was a dreadful ball back, fired in too hard and not along the ground making it a difficult hit.

Moura is Moura, head down and aimless runs, he produced very little with the chances he had on the ball.

I’ve seen it back and it was ok
But one decent bit of play or even two doesn’t really compare to what we get when Kulu is on. One players plays with brains and to the system, the other is scatter gun and head down which IMO hurts the system and other players around him as they can’t predict where he will be

So what do we think is realistic for some players we may shift

winks - £15M
Gio - £25-£30m
bergwein - £20m
Sanchez - £20m
Rodon - £15m
Royal - £20m
Tanguy £3m loan fee as no one is buying him
Moura £10m due to his contract, but IMO an unlikely sale which is fine if conte is happy
We may also get a loan fee for Gil and sell Clarke and CCv for about £10m combined
I don’t think any of these fees are crazy or unrealistic but it all depends on whose buying of course
When up in pool we guessed around £100m in sales could be doable and that meant a few of the above didn’t leave

only one of the players above could be classed be as a conte first 11 player and that’s royal who I don’t think gets in when Doherty is back

all though would need replacing as they have all played quite a few games under Conte other than Gio and Tanguy

we have Sam Johnstone joining and Eriksen too from what I was told. Sarr would be back to probably go out on loan

We would need some CBS but we knew that, a goal scorer or two, a new a RWB (nothing we couldn’t see before). We may want another CM, and I think we desperately need a striker and to promote one of the lads that’s been on loan too so that Scarlett can get a much needed loan.

You cannot mention Atouba without mentioning two things.

His Cruyff turn on the 6 yard box against Boro when we were on a run of 6 straight defeats.

The epic substitution against Chelsea in the park the bus game at Stamford Bridge. They're making a movie about that one but rumour is that it'll have to be a 3 parter.

Loved that season because its the one where I finally felt we got our club back and were moving in one direction together.

I want our transfer activity to largely concentrate on two top quality wingbacks. Of lower priority should then be a left sided centre back and an outright centre forward. If we sell Winks and PEH, then we should get in a Bissoma type player.
Pape Sarr might be the Bissouma type player. That'll give us Skipp, Sarr, Holdburg, and Benta for the 2 midfield spots, which should have us covered. And as far as wingbacks go, I'd focus more on a right-sided one, given we seem to be OK on the left with Sess and Reggie.

Sarr as one of 4 CMs would be a massive gamble, especially if we’re in the CL

I don’t see Conte taking that risk

I think reaching the CL (if...) should allow us to look at a slightly higher bracket, quality-wise. Eriksen would be great in a midfield two against parkthebus-sides, but even a midfield of Eriksen, Skipp, Hojbjerg and Bentancur (and perhaps Sarr) feels a little light. Would someone like Rice really want to go to Man U in their current predicament? Or stay at West Ham when he feels he may want CL football now?

Especially if we get CL I don't see us heading in to the season with the current midfield plus Sarr - There may be potential in him but Conte is going to want tried and trusted, I don't think a scenario where one long injury would have us relying on a kid or Winks to be a able to make a change in a big midweek game is "us covered" at all, not if we want to do anything serious.

My dream transfer scenario midfield wise would be Winks leaving, Phillips coming in to replace him and Sarr having a productive loan spell in English football, ideally playing as part of a midfield pairing in a similar set up to ours. I've also come round on the potential Eriksen return, seen it mentioned about him being in CM against teams shutting up shop and can see it working.

However I understand that there'd be a lot of competition for Phillips and also other areas we need to invest in, was Brozovic on a free? Can't remember which other CMs / DMs will have just one year left on the contract or on a bosman.

Much as I was a big fan of Winks, I think it's time for him to go and carve out a solid career elsewhere. I've always thought that he's be a star in Spain.

Declan Rice is an excellent shout, and I think we could be in with a chance if we're in the CL. But he definitely wouldn't be cheap. He'd be brilliant for us -- imagine having him and Eriksen alongside Bentancur and Hojbjerg as our CM options.

Same with Kalvin Phillips, but I think we'd be more likely to get him than Rice. I think he's unlikely to head to Man Utd, thankfully.

That said, I doubt we'd be prepared to pay high enough wages for either Rice or Phillips. I can Rice going to ManU and Phillips at Arsenal, unfortunately. But last night makes the latter seem a lot less likely. Although I suppose either would make a real statement of intent at Saudi Sportswashing Machine. Money talks.

I think there’s a decent chance we end up with Tielemans. He seems like a bit of a mercenary from his performances at Leicester since he decided to leave, but he’s very good and still young.

No way we’d pay what West Ham would want for Rice!
