Eric Dier

I know it’s not the main point of your post, but for me I think Dier’s first season in CM under Poch was his best season. He’s rightfully a CB now though, CM days are long gone.

First 2-3 seasons he was good under Poch, I just think he’s cut out a lot the silly mistakes he used to make. There was a period of 3-4 seasons when he ranged from average to poor and I would have been quite happy to sell him but I think he’s absolutely fine if he’s played in a specific system and has a ball playing CB alongside him. Even when he had good games, one of his hallmarks was a misplaced pass or a mistake akin to that but he’s just gone under the radar most weeks this season in a good way.

Yes to his great credit he has learned a couple of roles now a lot of players struggle to do one.

So finally we can see what he is and always was- a solid pro - which good teams always need.

Also he should get more free kicks as he can get more from a dead ball than Harry can.

Eh. I still don't see what has made him any better than average, tbh. In a 3 CB system where we sit deep a lot, his flaws aren't exposed much, but when we rely on him to bail us out, he still isn't around enough for me to justify calling him a lynchpin of the defense. Take our vulnerability at corners - I expect to see him out there organizing and lessening the danger, and he rarely does, seeming more focused on his man than anything else. Or when we need some accurate passing out from the back - he's 50:50 on a beautiful long ball or giving it away to the man right in front of him.

He'll probably stay at the center of that defense because we have too many other positions to fix this summer, and it's not the most taxing job on the field. But long term, we need better than Dier. A Romero-level player in the middle.

You know it’s Romero who has struggled with the set pieces?

Yep. But he isn't the one expected to organize things at set-pieces, either - that's Dier's job, technically, as the 'leader' of that backline. Like I said, he doesn't, he focuses on marking his own man more often than not, when we need someone back there who will take Romero to task at the things he doesn't do well.

By contrast, Romero absolutely excels at the things that,in the main, the system asks him to do. Be aggressive, advance up the field, dispossess blokes high up the field. To a level Dier never has, and probably never will.

It's different roles at play. Romero is largely excellent at his. Dier is basically average at his. Davies is also basically average at his. Both need upgrading on to get to the top. Given we can't buy 10 players in a window, we will likely focus on upgrading Davies over Dier.

Dier can tell him what to do as much as anyone
Doesn’t mean he does it and you can then park some of the blame on others
And that’s not knocking Romero who is class of course but he does struggle to switch on at set pieces whilst having loads of other strengths

No, it's not Diers job to organise at set-pieces, that's Contes job during the week. On the pitch Dier can remind people what they should be doing, but once the ball is kicked damn right I want him focusing on the man he's marking, just like everyone else. Blaming Dier on someone else failing to do their job is ridiculous.

when he is drinking wine?

I agree that a solid factor in his improved performances recently has been him playing a role that suits him better. Being a good fit for his role in the current system is vital, for him as for anyone. I don't care much about flaws that aren't exposed much.

I also think he's improved somewhat at least. I think his passing is generally good when he uses his right foot, when he tries more ambitious passes with his left I'm always a touch nervy as those are often hit and miss.

When we defend corners we have our captain right there. We have our talisman in Kane, the frequently vocal Hojbjerg. I'm not sure as much of the responsibility you put on Dier belongs at his feet.

I think Dier is good enough. But he's not outstanding in the way that Romero looks to me at least. Another outstanding CB in either position would be really good. I also think Davies is good enough.

We should prioritise LCB as we only have one player that is natural in that role. We should prioritise other positions even higher imo. But we need one CB at least, preferably as good as possible.

everyone is saying we need an attacker wing back for conte but you can't do that with Dier and Davies there. Since Mourinho's time the issue was always getting the balance between the defence and midfield right. Conte set us up for attack early on but we leaked goals through mistakes at the back and has since got us playing deep and more defenders shielding the defence than attacking, to the point where we aren't attacking much as a team any more than expecting the odd dash down the wings or some invention by Kulu.

if we can keep the defence line high - and you need a good leader for that to read the game especially on the counter - we can compress play and get more bodies and balls to Son and Kane. A better CB and RCB will not only leak less goals, but it will allow us to attack more.

If the downside of a more attacking wing back is him being worse defensively or less in position defensively I would perhaps agree.

I don't think that has to be the case. There are players that are good at both. Wing backs that are better on the ball can do more useful things in the areas where our current wing backs are and do receive the ball.

Tbh i dont think Conte wants to condense the space by playing a high line. He wants the dangermen to have space to play in, and having talented WBs stretches the space across the pitch with quick switches of play (scousers doing it all the time), so when the quick verticals arent on, you're zig-zagging.

It’s exactly how he plays
He even talks about it regularly when arguing that the system Ian t defensive, it’s brave. Play the ball around at the back to suck teams in, creating space to play through

It can be both... A dynamic defence line that can shift from defence into attack quickly. Recall his Chelsea team with Luiz? With a low line wingbacks are key but with a high line and pushing up through the centre starting with the CCB we can commit more men in midfield and then more men in box.
