The Limp Struggle to Sneak into the top 4 2021/22

Yeah

We *just* have to win all our games and hope they slip up in one (or both) of the other two that they play - Saudi Sportswashing Machine at SJP in the form they are in will be difficult and hopefully Everton need a result which will make that harder than it would be otherwise so potential they will drop points.

I'm not overly confident we'll beat them Thursday tbh

I'd really prefer Everton to need something as well because Fat Frank fudging hates us and can't see him wanting to do us a favour. To be fair to the guy, he is a pro so I wouldn't expect him to throw the game or anything but it's fine margins at this level. I'd rather he needed something for himself from that game.

If we draw Thursday we then need 2 wins to leave them to get 3 pts in their final two.

If we win then we can put them under pressure by beating Burnley.

If we lose, it'll be one of the worst nights ever at WHL.

Obviously the key now is beating them and burnley. They’d be on a downer from losing to us and then go to newc on a monday night two points behind us knowing only a win will do.

Tbh tho this is not the be all and end all. We have ended above them 5 years in a row and its not like this is for the title, its just one years worth of CL. I dont see that having a massive impact on the long term fortunes of either club. Whoever gets it this year could easily miss out next season.

The players we will target in the summer would still come and for me personally the EL is a more attractive proposition after spending time in the abomination of the conference. We should have a very good squad next season to attack all the competitions.

I agree with this point 100% - was thinking about it, and yesterday's result was so encouraging.

If Conte stays and if backed properly the future could be so exciting for us. This would make finishing fifth bearable in my opnion - this year wasn't our year....but you lot better watch out for us in 2022/23

With the EL the group stages are a little bit more manageable - could be a nice cup to win.

Obviously to get champions league would be fantastic and not denying that.

I really don’t believe Arteta can bring them much further. He’s a glorified PE teacher and although I’ve only seen them a handful of times this season, they’ve looked good on a couple of occasions but very poor on most others.

Conte, on the other hand, can bring us a lot further if we give him the tools to do it. I’m still all in on CL qualification this season but if we don’t get it, we still have it within our grasp to firmly put those clams in our rear view mirror.

I think arteta is like Poch myself

He isn't mate. He's an upper mid-table manager who got time and, crucially, backing.

His owner shipped out every one of the players he didn't want, and brought in players he did want - spending 120m *net* in the process, most of it owner funding.

In the post-season analyses, it's likely to he forgotten about, but if they finish 4th, it will be because Kroenke backed them to do so last summer.

Speculate to accumulate. Kroenke did it. Simple as.

Meanwhile, we have the Joe & Dan tax to pay forevermore. We have to keep hoping for miracles, punching above our weight, hoping world-class managers like Conte stay content to keep sewing silk purses from the pigs' ears that a lot of our current squad are, from Dier to Sanchez to Emerson and Winks.

Something has to change at the very top, at the mentality of the club to change. A determination to win, not just make up the numbers, not just to be happy we won Groundsman of the Year (tm) or Best Balance Sheet 2022. And that costs money.

Getting CL just makes everything a little bit easier. Conte staying. Extra cash for signings. Kane signing an extension...

We'll still look at Conte's points since he arrived and see we are at the races - 3rd best which is something to build on. Just gives everyone a lift with us finishing in 4th (or 3rd :). It is out of our hands, but you look at the goal difference and the way both teams have played and we are deserving of 4th on merit. Which gives me hope. If they come up against a determined Saudi Sportswashing Machine and we perform, then we should do it. There is just some luck and rub of the green involved. Arse could very easily turn newcash over. Or get a lucky goal etc. Such is the joy of football - anything is possible.

Yep I’m expecting us to have a really good PL campaign next season. Think others trying to get in to the top 4 will be better too but I think our progression will be even more so with Conte and the players we will bring in that will fit his system.

I think we could even end 3rd next season as long as we assemble a really good squad, which we will need to do to go deep in the cups without putting our PL form at risk.

If we end 5th this season I believe we will end 3rd and win the EL next season. Domestic cups I have no idea but think they will be secondary to the PL and EL campaigns.

To stand a chance we have to beat Burnley. That could mean Everton are safe before they play Arsenal in the last round and we might need them get a result.

Literally the same convo I just had with my old man
But if Everton keep on building some momentum they might actually be decent at the Death Star

Ok Are we optimistic of beating them on Thursday first and foremost?

My bigger concern is Burnley holding out for a draw against us. However the way things are going, they need to be looking for wins not draws so I dont think they can come and park the bus

Two wins for us and they'll go to Saudi Sportswashing Machine knowing they need to win. That won't be easy

Was just thinking that, can see us beating goons, playing really well and then being flat against burnley.

Mainly due to quick turnaround time for us only, the way burnley play and are lack of options to rotate. I think maybe we’d just get over the line a bit like the goons today.

Still can’t work out why Burnley aren’t playing Villa this Thursday. That would be fair

Or we could have played Arse on Wed. Either way, 2.5 days should be enough for a match fit pro to be ready in particular with the CL motivation

The risk really is recovering from any knocks
