Ryan Sessegnon

Can't deny he looks scared or lacks confidence.
How does Liverpool and Arsenal throw on young ones who may look raw but not scared?

Maybe its the team - it doesn't look like bonding is great at spurs. Observations include lack of teammates during altercations or going down injured, not a lot of communication on the pitch except when goals are scored.

He looked good in Germany, smiling and confident, getting along with team mates. Looks isolated and lonely on the pitch for us.

Still only 21 and had problems with injury, if he can get himself fit and have a run of games i still believe he has the talent to be a very good player for us.
When he had a run of games before his most recent injury he started to look more confident and his performances were improving.
Conte obviously sees him as a better WB than Reggie from the run of games he was giving him.

Fair enough but I seem to remember another young left back that we lumped a few quid on and persevered with when things weren't going well and he turned out to be pretty good at the old kicky football thing.

Every case has to be taken in isolation. They started off playing in the same position , that's where the comparison ends.
If you're talking about Bale then I always thought he would go on to be a top player , for me it was easy to see that , even when we couldn't win with him in the team.
It's not yet clear to me that Sessegnon will be a top player.
Unlike some , I don't think he has all the tools needed to get to the very top although he does have some useful assets but if he keeps getting injured we will never get to find out anyway.

I think you're about right, Bale was a freak. I just still think Sess needs more time, I'm not going to give up on a clearly gifted athlete until he's had a proper run in the team injury free. It's elite sport, he'll sink or swim.

What's the feeling on his latest performance?
I was left underwhelmed once again.
Poor decision making , doesn't know how to find space like for example Doherty does.
No anticipation and very slow to react , for example when Loris kicked the ball to the left side , I think the ball was meant for Davies but was overhit and ended up heading nearer to Sessegnon who did not react at all but the opposition did and nipped in and got the ball, starting off a dangerous attack.
There were lots of other examples like this.
I also felt his attacking play is so predictable and looks like he's following coached plays and there is no on field thinking, nothing off the cuff.
Even his pace seems to have dropped off.
Crossing ability is poor and he never seems to look and pick anybody out.
There was little or no threat from our left side , certainly not from him ,even against Leicester's reserves.
When Royal has had a better and more effective game than you then you know you're in trouble !

Thought he was a bit better. Not a high bar mind, the previous game he was taken off to move Davies to LWB with Sanchez in at LCB.

But better none the less. More of a threat. Got past the opponents at least a couple of times, got into some good areas, better on the ball. Still some way to go to his best performances this season, before his latest injury iirc. But improvement is good to see, probably needs a bit of time to get back that match fitness and belief.

I think both him and Royal are absolutely scared brickless of making mistakes
Royal looked a different player once we had that second goal and we’re in the ascendancy
Sess has looked better after a games too
IMO the impact of pressure on them and some others is hurting their games and it’s partly due to them not believing in or having the ability to play the system

This, but I also suspect there may be something in what @metalgear suggests above, he does seem a bit detatched from the team overall.

Never makes forward runs for some reason. The amount of times he can make the right back turn and run back to his own goal but instead just stands there. Davies will have it at his feet for a clip over the top and he just never moves.

100% agree with this. Sess continues to seem afraid of his own shadow. It was like playing with 10 men against Leicester. Nothing coming down our left at all. Was really surprised Conte wasn’t directing him more in the first half as he was right in front of him. We definitely need a top left wing back on the summer with Sess kept as back up to see if he will improve his game.

He certainly looks short on self belief, too many of our youth team players are like this, good players, good technique but lacking a bit of arrogance. Devine is the only one I've seen recently that looks to have that.

All the replies here after the Leicester game have pretty much nailed it, it's a lack of confidence. Great spot from Bedford regarding Royal and a bravery coming into his game once we had a cushion. Possibly the key to the eternal sexy debate, winners just either don't have the self doubt or if they do they're better equipped to keep them in check and that's just above the level Spurs will mostly always be positioned in the transfer market, the players we sign will be just as technically and athletically gifted as the cream ( Royal is an exception, sorry ) but it's that final percentage that the elite of the elite have psycholigically that wins trophies.

I understand you might be referring to our current crop of youngsters coming through so he might not count but Skipp definitely has a self-assured aura, perhaps not to an arrogance level but a steady inbuilt confidence that as rightly discussed, Sess appears to lack.

Injuries obviously haven’t helped, but hope he can get a good run of games to end the same. I am in the camp that finds Reggie rather frustrating to watch and still hold belief that Sess’ ceiling is higher.

Agree he has a sense of stoicism about him but maybe that is as much about the position he plays and type of footballer he is.

He is new to this position
On paper it’s perfect for him but the game ain’t played on paper as we know
He looks ok after a few games to get his rhythm but he needs time with conte now being drilled
His strength at Fulham was late runs to get into the box.. exactly what conte needs

Ahh, I was responding to a post about Skipp and comparing the two. Sorry mate, I didn't make that clear. Yes Sess is that player if Conte can get the confidence back for him that injury is always going to bugger up for a young player.

Definitely a confidence thing, the guy has constantly come back then got injured again, he’s going to be apprehensive about his game and his body and will take time. He’s a young boy with great technique. I reckon Conte is going to work strongly on his fitness in pre season and if he starts the season fighting fit he will be a dark horse to be one of our valuable players. He’s got all the right attributes….

Remember how Bale came back after somebody told him to do some gym work? That would be a great start I think.
