Ben Davies

It’s rare to find a CB who is comfortable with the ball, in this system Romero and Davies push up to support. Davies being a LB aswell as a CB means he is perfect for this position, getting a normal left footed CB may not be as simple as it sounds. Lots of different attributes needed to play that role.

Yeah I’m starting to feel that Davies isn’t that high a priority to replace. Rarely makes mistakes, and his ability to overlap as a left back is a real boost. I guess he’s not the quickest, tallest or strongest, which always limits his potential to some extent. And I’d imagine we’ll be looking for another body at CB anyway, if we loan (or even sell) Tanganga and Rodon. Would actually feel sad to see him replaced in the starting lineup though to be honest, he’s a true pro and a Spurs veteran!

He's a bit 'Dennis Irwin' completely unspectacular, but completely dependable.
That is a very good comparison... I like him, steady player, always looks calm... he's the right player for the position Conte wants him to play. Always comes over well in interviews, and quite funny too!

Players need regular games to show what they can do. So pleased he scored. Ben has always been a model pro. I'd still add another CB as first choice who's taller and more commanding. Ideally, they'd be better with the ball on the deck too.

Don’t think he’s anywhere near Irwin’s level personally. Has been much better in a back three thanks though. I agree with Bedford, wouldn’t trust him at LB but is solid at LCB.
You think so? He's been decent enough but imo has one notable weakness at CB, and that is a tendency to allow crosses to go in front or behind him in the hope they're going out of play, only to be caught out by nippy forwards cutting in and scoring on his blind side. It's happened once or twice too often, especially earlier this season, for it to be just one of those things. Although not so much recently tbf.

He’s definitely upgradable and we should look for another CB in the summer, especially if we sell Sanchez which I hope we do. But the need for one isn’t as urgent as it was a few months ago IMO. Long term, Davies isn’t the answer but he’s a capable squad player.

Think he's been much better than decent enough personally.

The way you see it has it not been as much of an issue recently because he's defending better on those situations, or because we defend better as a team in those situations?

If we're talking about the same kinds of situations they're horrible to defend and even very good centre backs will struggle with those at times. Space to defend, good delivery, movement from the opponents.

Agree his overall defending has been better this season but less so with this particular weakness.
He has a HABIT of just spreading his arms out as the ball passes him by as if to indicate there's no danger. Others do not do that. Seen him do it several times this season, including two or three when we've conceded. So too soon to say he has eradicated this weakness.

Spot on and i agree, as i have said before he is not a great player but is one who always puts a shift in and has been a big plus this season.

Won’t be easy to upgrade on despite what some think IMO

We need at least one cb in the summer. One that can play lcb. The drop in quality if one of the 3 get injured is too big. We might aswell try and get one that improves our first 11 not just our squad. It might be difficult but that is what paratici is paid for.

I've been dropping Josko Gvardiol's name in here quite a bit. IMO, similar to Davies because he plays both as as LB and a CB. Seems like he's playing as the LCB in the back three at Leipzig but I don't watch Bundesliga at all. Young and has potential, could possibly replace Davies by 2024.
