Harry Winks

I'm certainly not a hater, i think there's a place and a role for winks, but it isn't there and it certainly isn't beside peh.
One criticism i do have of winks though is the shouting at players, he did it a couple of weeks ago when someone made a poor clearance, Sanchez i think, very early in a game, it wasn't the time or the place or his responsibility to be doing that.
There is always a time to flag up another players errors, just as it should be done to him
Yesterday it started after 20 minutes
He pressed and Moura stood still near to royal. Kane was static and so was son and the ball was behind them. They just passed it wide to the French lad down the left and he murdered us again

Wasn’t there a comparison between him and JWP a few years back? Even comparing the 2 now is an insult to JWP.

Both Winks and PEH had difficult a difficult time yesterday. They were both forced/lured out of position by Southampton, but they should be experienced enough and have enough communication skills to not allow that to happen to them. It was a rippling effect that turned into a tsunami, and in the end most of the time it crashed down on Royal. This was not accidental, or by chance. Southampton did that with intention, and we failed to counter it properly for any lenght of time. We should have seen that our central pairing was frequently being pulled to far apart from each other both in pressing forward, and also in sideways movement.

I thought the pressing from the front three was mediocre at times, and this contributed to the problem above.

I was looking at the stats from the first half, and noticed that even though Kane had plenty touches, a couple of shots etc, he was registred with 0 sprints. I'm not sure if that is by design, to protect his hamstrings, or if it is just the way he presses. Southamptons striker, by comparison, had 5 sprints in the first half.

By the way, it seems like we're always brick when it is raining cats and dogs. Don't we like the British weather?

Said it to my mates before we left home
Gonna be a wet one and our players hate the rain…

Not by berating them at the beginning of a game, and certainly not by a player of winks "stature".
Do we know that the tactic was to press them in those areas?
Pure conjecture, but maybe winks was getting pulled out of position and leaving holes Southampton exploited.
Anyway, it was a bit of a brick show from just about everyone, but we shouldn't be surprised, the chance to go above arsenal and we bottle it, again.

We don’t of course know the tactics but I doubt it was stand still abs jet them run past
I find it crazy that we have players who can’t play 2 games in a week

JWP tends to play well against us, but the fact he's still at Southampton suggests he doesn't play like that against other opposition

I also find it mas that none if our players have on field initiative.
We have the English and French national captains ffs, and yet if its not going right they just seem to accept it.
Weird.

Does that logic apply to PEH? Attempting to belittle the team that bossed us in our on yard won’t change the result / performance.

Winks-wise, perhaps it’s a gross oversimplification but he doesn’t have the engine or defensive awareness to play in a midfield two against teams that will put pressure on us. Hoping that he’s suddenly going to become Kante doesn’t help him or us.

There was and is a lack of on field leadership
It’s why managers like Dier
But then flip it around to your earlier comment and the winks thing… players should be willing t hold each other to account more IMO, on and off the pitch

We shouldn’t need to be defending as much against Southampton as we should in theory with the better payers be able to do more to play out.
They focussed heavily on our right hand side as it’s a huge weakness with 3 players that can’t pass well. Add in Hojdjberg who passed the ball so bad yesterday and then winks who had a poor game too and it’s suddenly 5 areas of weakness

This one reason why we need time for Conte to get his mentality instilled into the teams DNA.
Not going to happen quickly or easily. We listen to Hasenhüttl say that was Southampton’s best ever performance which emphasises these things take time.

I don’t see how your post relates to mine but okay?

The arrogance (from some) of “its only Southampton and we did well against Brighton in the cup so why should we change anything” is great until they had the audacity of turning up and bringing the game to us.

There's a difference between organising and berating.

I miss quoted your post
But your right
It was the post you made before I was meant to quote

Better in a midfield three I think.

Good enough to be useful against a good high press, but that requires more players around him at a higher level on the ball.

Dier back helps. Bentancur will help as well I think. Even Skipp over Hojbjerg helps a bit.

And he wins more tackles than players like PEH
I remember when we were linked with PEH and I argued it was prowse would should go for…
What I’ll add now though is would he get as much time on the ball at a bigger club. I’m not sure as teams would press and work harder against those teams. But arguably in reverse his better passing would help him out
He plays more like de bruyne now, drifting wide to cross

Do you also remember that the main argument against signing him was that he'd be 3-4 times as expensive as PEH and we didn't have the money?

He also seems to play best with a more defensive midfielder next to him, PEH, Romeu. We needed a more defensive midfielder at the time.
