Emerson Royal

This guy can't dribble, cross or shoot. He isn't that great defensively either. Still better than Doherty though.

I think he's very good defensively.

He's tidy enough on the ball, but he needs a wide player ahead of him to combine with. That's not really the way we play in this system.

He can develop în training and în first rounds of cups all he wants, we need a starter this transfer period. Problem is that we have so many positions we need new players în, that a RWB might not be the priority.

I think RWB will be a priority. We have no credible option and Conte asks a hell of a lot from his wing backs. Can't just keep going with one trusted player in such a crucial role.

I think it's probably also one of the positions where a new signing has the most potential to make our starting 11 stronger, at least in games where our wing backs do a lot of attacking.

Coming after Aurier's defensive "performances" can make you look like Maldini. I do agree we should keep him as he is young and its his first year în PL, but not as a first 11.
Hopefully we can get someone better în and offload Doherty.

What about Max Aarons, not seen him play for a while but always highly rated and clearly won't be at Norwich next season. Does seem more of a traditional RB than a wing back so we may not be any better off.

Olise and Saka both looked good in that role today if we're after a homegrown option with the potential to move up a level

His crosses today reminded me of Rugby Union line outs.
When he got the ball, he waited patiently until the entire opposition was set and ready before launching it there.

Yeah and the crosses were executed in the same way with them being hung up quite slowly, so even if we did win the header it was hard to get any power on it.

If he gets to the byline he’s fine but its the crosses from further out where he struggles. But at least we know what he needs to work on in training. Drilling and whipping those crosses in with venom. There is no reason why in time that he cant master it.

He struggled yesterday, so did Reguilon. Really need something more against lower table teams who pack the middle and sit behind the ball. Time and again the space was down the wings
I would love us to sign Lampty from Brighton but probably out of our price range.

Having only just watched the full game, I think the criticism of Royal is a bit excessive. Firstly, he put a good few balls into a decent area, but we only had a couple of bodies in the box.

Also, we had so much of the ball out there it was basically the position of a right winger. It’s unfair to ask someone who is basically a full back to expect a load of pinpoint deliveries which is really what was required. He has delivered some good balls for us and some not so good balls during his time here so far - how many right backs outside of Trent Arnold do you know consistently putting in good crosses?

Conte seeing how things were panning out could have put a winger type there like Moura to try and be more productive in there - he obviously had his reasons why he didn’t go that way, but I don’t have any real issues with Royals output there and will likely improve the more he trains and plays in this position. At least he kept showing and didn’t hide….

MOTD highlighted not only his poor crossing but that supplied by the whole team (they included a poor cross by Son as part of their analysis).
And why was son out there crossing…
We didn’t have enough players making it hard for them to defend
The crosses weren’t great but most were defended unchallenged

He's young and has potential, and as a young player will have poor periods. We do need a credible second option like we have on the left. Might be that we sell Emerson in a couple years, but lets see how he develops

I think we need at least competition for the starting spot. A more attacking option that can be an obvious starter in at least some games.

Basically the position of a right winger is the role of a wing back in this system quite often. That's the requirement.

It's harsh to judge him by that role because it's not his best role, it's not really fair. Just like it's not fair to judge Sanchez as a ball playing centre back. Just like it wasn't fair to judge Winks as a Mourinho style midfielder or Alli as a deep midfielder.

This is the role now, this will remain the role as long as Conte's here.

I agree that there are very few with the ability of Alexander Arnold. That doesn't have to be the standard, that would be close to impossible. Standout at either getting past players or at crossing, better than most in the PL at the very least, that for me is the standard.

As competition would trippier be a good shout? Guessing high wages now. But as a short term solution, he definitely has the crossing ability.

Trippier is an outstanding crosser
And better defensively than we saw in his final season when he was injured

For us it’d be a good shout most definitely. However I cant see Trippier risking a move where he’s just an option at this stage of his career. Would say it’s madness for a player to leave Atletico for Saudi Sportswashing Machine but I guess Partey already went one worse..

As for Royal, when taking in to account the new league, changes of manager / system he has been steady, if perhaps unspectacular. At this stage I’m not lining up to get his name on my shirt next season but on the plus side i’d rather him than Aurier or Foyth.

Didn't someone mention at inter wingbacks were 65% of the substitutions under conte? Wouldn't be an option, it would be rotation.

Anyway was just spitballing.

Don’t get me wrong I’d be up for signing him and that’s an interesting + valid point re the sub choices. Who knows if footballers hold on to grudges but he wasn’t overly happy being an option / rotation player (I’m not sure I fully grasp the difference if there is one) with us under Poch, although it’s probably better be competing against Royal rather than Walker..
