Coronavirus

I wonder if this might be the end starting to play out. The general view is that Covid will in time settle down as the 5th cold virus. If this new variant outcompetes Delta but is much milder, we'll hopefully see cases rocket, but hospitalisations and deaths collapse. Delta has already been a bit on that path in this country the last month or so.

The report from soweto (included in the vid i posted) does suggest unvaccinated can still have severe cases. For younger adults aswell.

Still early days though.

Unfortunately not. A variant like this would have been picked up very quickly given the amount of testing going on in the UK.

We don’t know enough yet to see where this leaves us but they are obviously spooked by it.

Another sign that the pandemic isn’t over here until it’s over everywhere.
It's over, has been for 6 months.

Everyone just needs to find their stiff upper lips and take the rubber sheets off of their beds.

I thought the woman from the South African Medical Association said this morning they've not admitted one patient to hospital with it yet? That it's only been causing fatigue and aches, but not even coughs?

She hadn't. But in soweto another doctor has. Watch the vid.

The issue isn't deaths at the moment. We won't know that for a month. The issue is case numbers in south africa are doubling every couple of days. Still low at the moment (although they don't test much) but if it keeps on doing so there could be a massive problem. Especially if it evades the vaccines which it seems it does.

They were publishing the stats just like you do

None of which are why people are concerned.

They had reported no cases before the 22nd. Now it's 90% of cases. Went from a handful of cases to over 3000 a day in less than a week. People who have been vaccinated are catching it.
Covid takes on average a month to catch it, get very sick and die. So no the amount of deaths wouldn't be effected yet (8 yesterday by the way not 20).

If it's ifr is the same as other variants and it can evade vaccines. We are back to march 2020. Even worse because thisspreads a lot faster. That is why people are concerned.

This. Your best defence against illness and disease is a healthy immune system. A lot of people in this country aren’t in good metabolic health sadly. But neither of the two major political parties in our country will touch this issue with a 10 foot pole. They’re too scared to tell people they need to get themselves in shape because it’s not PC in 2021. We’d rather protect people’s feelings and emotions than their lives apparently.
That’s simply not true. Obesity is always pointed out as the number one risk factor for every known chronic condition a bit like smoking and excess alcohol consumption . Fit for life, sugar tax are all examples of the state trying to combat obesity. It keeps thousands in a job. The only thing they don’t do is point and shout at fat people in public which is presumably what you would like to see so that we are not being viewed as “too pc?”

Sugar and processed food could be taxed far more heavily, or limits placed on its content in food. But both parties are too in the pockets of big business to ever do that. Make fresh food cheaper than processed food and the health of the nation leaps forward overnight.

People are so overweight here compared to 30-40 years ago. Sedentary work has contributed, but it's mainly the rise of brick foods and a sugar/taste buds arms race

No offence mate, but this sort of reaction is the problem. Being fat isn’t bad, what’s bad is pointing out that fat is bad. We shouldn’t taunt people who struggle with weight, but honestly if you’re asking me if we can do more then I’d say 100% the government and politicians should talk about it more at the very least. It’s not about shaming people but they also need to have some skin in the game. People can’t eat as much as they want and as bricky a food as they want and expect the government to cover the bill. It’s not a coincidence that countries with thinner populations like Japan, Singapore and South Korea have fewer covid deaths whereas countries like the UK and America have been hit harder. Maybe more advertising from the government promoting exercise. As I said before, the best defence you can have against illness is a healthy immune system. Obviously you can’t do anything about your genetics and people do just get what they get sometimes despite being healthy but that was milk always be the case. My dad had not the best diet but wasn’t more than a massively overweight, he also never drank alcohol or smoked and still got bowel cancer at 59 so it’s pot luck sometimes.
