So, what happened today?

My company have just announced they are removing annual leave allowance limits from next year. If you need leave, you can take it (with manager's approval). No more counting days/eking out leave to year end etc.
Interesting. Is it only paid for the first 25 days or whatever? Then "no pay"... or is it that you have to pay your employer :D

All paid.
I think it will really be mostly used for those odd days that crop up where you have to otherwise 'waste' a day's holiday - children-related stuff, non-family funerals, plus maybe the odd long weekend. It's not going to be people suddenly taking multiple 2 or 3 week breaks, I can't see that getting signed off. Plus we all have work to get done, so can't just keep taking leave, much as I might like to!

All paid.
A-ha, I guess I skipped over the bit that says "with manager's approval".
So you are likely to find a manager that keeps a very firm lid on it.
But it would be funny if a manager was annoyed/leaving and wanted to just blow things up and sign off 200 days of paid leave... how the hell did you allow that to happen?! You are in HR I think? One rogue manager could let their whole team have the year off, paid.

I'm not in HR.
I suppose there can be extremes in anything, but that scenario is pretty unlikely to arise and I am sure there will be provisions in place to ensure there is no abuse of the policy - the company has to be able to function. However applying one of life's better rules of thumb - treat people well and fairly and they will reciprocate. It's a very good company that takes good care of its employees. I actually think there's more risk of some people taking less annual leave than they would normally, without something to remind them they are getting to the 'use it or lose it' part of the year. (I won't be in that category!).

20 years ago I would have put work first as I climbed the ladder and worked my ass off to get ahead.
Nowadays I would take Monday off, and Wednesday, and Friday afternoons...

I’ve started not working on Fridays. Health reasons, and I’m a contractor so it’s pretty much up to me if I want a 20% invoicing haircut. Anyway, it’s very difficult.

To do it properly, work comms need to be disconnected from all devices (leaving only SMS or phone calls for emergencies), so that’s emails, Teams notifications and lots else to disable every week. I also need to cut myself off from external information which is relevant to my role. That’s about half of the internet. Otherwise, it’s impossible not to do my job.

I’m looking forward to being well enough to do 60 hours, bill 40, and do what I enjoy rather than spending time doing nothing, which isn’t really fun.

Why would you work 60 hours but bill 40? Can't you just bill what you work. For teams and emails (if you use Outlook mobile app) you can have schedules that mute all notifications between certain times or on certain days.

I must be doing contracting wrong then as I'm paid for 7 hours a day and do not a minute more or less

i was meant to be interviewing for a new contract today
Followed the Teams link and sat in the teams waiting room for 20 minutes and nobody joined me from the company I was talking too
Rang my recruiter, he rang me back and said they had forgotten, they had a lot on today !!!
WTF, how bad is that on their part, recruiter was very embarassed
They want to reschedule but I'm not sure I'll speak with them, shame as it's really decent money too

I enjoy the work and I’m trying to justify a larcenous day rate.

The mother in law who is like a mother to me an amazing woman, is sick. She lives in England now over from Ireland 7 years ago.

She has lost a stone and a half in 3 weeks, blood tests have come back negative. We are taking her for a scan at worthing hospital next week. The way she is walking it is not looking good.

The wife said to me this morning "soon we will be the oldest generation"

To be expected that your parents go before you but it is a horrible time.

I lost my father 9 years ago and my mother 23 years ago. Think both their deaths took me a year to get over and even then you never really do. Trying to be as comforting and humane as possible for her.

We did not sleep last night, it was one of those nights you just lie there listening to each other breathe but not knowing what to say.

The nights are the hardest time.

Sorry to hear that, hope it turns out to be ok.
