Ryan Nelsen

Perhaps he agreed to sign knowing they'll sell him so that we can get a better deal. He was leaving anyway and did us a favour?

Think we have an option on Gomes' contract to extend it by another 2 years.

Thats interesting, he is still a top Keeper and I want us to get some Dineiro back for him. I still dont understand why he is 3rd Choice under Harry, but Brad has shown what a calm pair of hands and a leader at the back can do.

We're playing at a level where a shot stopper isn't necessarily what we need the most. Leadership and concentration levels are more important.

I agree with you, But I dont see that from Cudicini when he comes in either. Not a biggie, just a curiosity really.

He was shocking second part of last season - not sure what other proof was needed to realise his flaws? Lose another 10 points due to his flaps?

We played Cudicini in the cups early on as Gomes wasn't mentally ready and we've stuck with him for most of them.

One thing about Nelsen:

Back when he was a Blackburn regular he was a very confident and vocal defender.

Regarding the fact that Dawson and Kaboul always play best alongside King, Nelsen in his own right may contribute to making both of them better players when fielded alongside him.

Also I remember him as very useful at set-pieces.

I also get the impression he is a players' playerÔÇöone of those strong dressing room personalities and "good characters" that Redknapp says he likes around the place.

But how many points did his 'flaps' save? I think Friedel is the better keeper but being rooted to the spot at every set piece is just as bad as coming for every one and 'flapping' at them. Gomes is a fantastic keeper at his best, he was the best in the league IMO when we came 4th, I just think his problem is consistency (which is obviously massive when you have such an important job!).

He cost us massive games in the second part of the season - not sure how we can possibly look past those

Making a save is what he's paid for

It's probably been mentioned before but Brad and Nelsen did spend some time together at Blackburn, they're probably good mates which can only help.

Wierdly I'm quite excited about seeing the two senior january signings play.

Exactly. Signings made in January are usually about plugging a gap until summer. On the other hand I wouldn't be surprised if Nelsen didn't feature at all. Maybe against Stevenage.

Gomes wasnt that much of a problem last season. not enough goals scored was the reason we failed to reach the CL

I agree, I just think it's a myth that his approach to set pieces is the huge flaw that many make it out to be.

Blackburn fans speculating that he was fit all along, but Venky's put a stop to him playing because of appearance-based fees that were due to him.

Exactly. The psychological impact (good and bad) the goalkeeper has on a team is massive. Its not just the mistakes/bloopers they DO make its the psychological baggage that goes with them. Trust evaporates and fear can infiltrate the back four and beyond. Its always there in the background. Its tragic but we're all waiting for the next one.

The best thing i can say about friedel is i almost don't notice him, i don't even think about him playing, he's there and he's solid. He's not on the defences mind and he's not on harry's mind and thats massive.
