Cristian Romero

At the club at the moment? Dier, but as I mentioned, he's a suboptimal solution.

The ideal 'cat' to partner Romero would be the following -

a) left-footed or is used to playing on the left;
b) excellent at spreading play and long passes;
c) a good organizer;
d) good in the air;
e) reasonably mobile; and
f) comfortable drifting out to the flank if necessary (to cover for Reguilon).

The few players who fit *all* those categories (Alessandro Bastoni, Lucas Hernandez, Presnel Kimpembe, Mario Hermoso, Laporte) are out of our reach. A level below are players like Sven Botman and Pau Torres, but they have their own issues - Pau is a bit physically underwhelming for his size and has looked shaky on international duty, Botman is slow and a bit immobile. A further level below would be players like Clement Lenglet (coming off a bad year, confidence a bit shaky), Evan Ndicka (seems better in a three than a two), Benoit Badashile (only 20) and Marcos Senesi (coming from the Netherlands, always a bit of a risk).

So, on the market, if we were to look for a 'cat' to partner Romero, we'd have to make compromises on some of those ideal qualities. Close to the top of my list, though (if not at the top of it), would be Edmond Tapsoba - while not left-footed, he's used to playing on the left of the back line for Leverkusen, is a truly magnificent passer (his pass progression stats are routinely comparable to advanced midfielders), and routinely wins his defensive duels in the box and uses his magnificent pace to cover his defensive partners.

He's not the type to constantly communicate and organize from what I've seen, but of all the options out there, he's probably my top, barely-gettable pick.

I still think Pau Torres could be the answer in the new Vertonghen quest. He'd also fit in with the Spanish speaking thing our defence has got going on

Call me a Luddite, and I know nothing about Pau Torres, but I'd very much like a solid 6'3"+ beast as our new CB. Much as Romero seems to punch above his weight, we're lacking height and physical presence once you take Dier out of the equation. We need a CB who could dominate at corners and at least attempt to deal with the likes of Antonio and Lukaku.

Lopez is very very good but not known for his physical side. Same as Kounde
Maybe the plan is a little and larger combo

Play Dier in those two games, and have a quicker more cultured option for the others?

I think a CB that enables us to play a higher line again will suddenly fix a lot of our midfield and forward issues too

I don’t think that’s the issue at all
We have a world class player not playing anywhere near to his level in Kane, and as an attacking unit we focus so much in him that the bar drops when he drops his levels
Add in Lucas who is a head down kinda player
Son whose brilliant in space but struggles against low blocks
Bergwein who hasn’t got going here
Gil who is a kid
Lo Celso who we play CM or RW, not his natural postion
Tanguy where trying to squeeze into a number 10 but he is an 8 at best
We have huge problems with that mix of players

Hopefully whatever loan-to-buy agreement Paratici signed with Atalanta is more watertight than that which Southampton signed with Atletico for Alderweireld, otherwise I can see PSG gazumpuing us so Romero can join up with his hero Messi.

Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT.com, Romero says: “I feel really good. I’m really happy to take this next step in my career, it’s something I’m really looking forward to.

“When you’re offered the chance to play in the Premier League, it’s not something you need to think twice about.”

…”Messi is not just a great player, he is an absolute GHod in football,” Romero adds. “And I think it’s not just me saying that. Anyone who knows football, who knows Messi, will say the same thing.

“To have the opportunity to play with him is amazing, but also to share a dressing room with him is just incredible.”
