Emerson Royal

Early days, but it feels like we've spent a sizeable amount of money and not improved the position. Would have rather kept Aurier and Tanganga for the rb spots, sold Doherty and used that money and the money for Royal for a creative player that we so desperately lack.

Was more impressed by him yesterday. Very early days but he showed close control and touches which hint at his technical ability. His athleticism is clear. At 22 his best years are ahead of him, and I think it was likely the only window we could have signed him.

But yes RB shouldn’t have been a priority - when we needed more in midfield.

It was a priority given that Aurier was most likely finished at the club and Doherty is a really poor for for the system Nuno seems to want to implement.

We really only had Tanganga that Nuno rated.

Emerson seems fine. He's not super quick, but he's a good athlete. Somewhat limited on the ball, that will hopefully improve a bit at least. Solid enough one vs one defensively and can defend the area, decent decision making so far. For this system those are key attributes.

His limitations on the ball causes some problems though. Particularly because we lack standout quality on the ball in our back line, in Hugo and in several of our midfield options.

I actually think Royal is better than you make out. If he is as limited as you say, there really wasn't any point pushing Tanganga and Doherty out the team. Both are big and strong too. I think Royal has a bit more footballing ability. He had some touches yesterday which hinted at his greater ability. Tangana (and Doherty) just need regular games, so for me, the midfield was a priority over RB. We could have even kept Aurier for a year. In midfield Nuno is trying to convert Alli to a midfielder, has Ndombele who can only play 60mins, and only really Hojbjerg as a surefire CM; a player who played every game last season and faded at the end.

Let's see with time for Emerson on the ball. To me he looks limited, will need the team around him to play better. Worse than Aurier in that regard quite certainly imo.

Doherty doesn't need games imo. He needs a different system. The same Nuno that got the best out of him at Wolves chose Tanganga and a very newly signed Emerson ahead of him. And had us sign Emerson when we already had him and Tanganga. Seems rather clear to me that Nuno doesn't rate Doherty for this system, that to me makes a lot of sense.

To me RB isnt going to be an issue for us to think about for the next 2 seasons - revisit the summer after that.

Given Emerson and Tanganga some time to gain some experience and bed in. Both are still young and raw. It might be that neither makes it (either complete or at RB - Tanganga might be a CB) but we have bigger issues to solve over the next 2 years.

obviously sell Doherty if there are any takers...

Agreed. He looked pretty good defensively I thought (especially as Chelsea kept on creating overloads out there with Lo Celso not doing any tracking back to help solve).

Does seem a bit strange to me though that we spent significant sums on a right back who may or may not be better than Aurier who we paid to leave when the manager wanted a specific right wing forward who would've been way, way, WAY better given the free role on the right of the front 3 that Lo Celso got yesterday.

He had no cover at all
Lo Celso did cover the middle a bit bit but was kinda drifting
I really like the couple of headers he cleared. He could teach Reggie on that front

Emerson looks fine on the ball to me. But I would say it’s funny that for all the excessive moaning on here about Aurier, even considering his brain farts he still looks pound for pound the best RB the club had….

Strange that no one has picked him up on a free though

I wouldn’t say so. Spurs have paid off his contract, he can literally chill for the season and wouldn’t have lost out money wise…..
That’s if we did that.
We may have agreed to terminate his contract early so he can get a signing on pay day earlier

Royal seemed ok yesterday, early days etc.

How attacking is he? I haven't really seen much of him before the signing, the obligatory YouTube video of course, he seems very reluctant to get forward so far, not his style or more that he's likely under instructions not to?

There is no real upside there for the player though.... He might as well carry on drawing his wages knowing that he can go on a free anyway.
I think it is over 90% likely that some of his wages have been paid.

I'm not sure that this 4-3-3 Nuno is playing allows the full backs to attack much. It looks like the front 3 are pretty much completed free'd from defensive responsibility which places a real emphasis on the rest of the team being primarily defensive players.

Looks that way
