Tanguy Ndombele

He does things others can't. We need to find a system to get the best out of him. It makes such a difference having a midfielder who uses his first touch to attack as opposed to control the ball then play it safe. Players that can break through the lines with skill or speed make a huge difference to any side.

Agree with all that. We just need him to be more reliable if we're going to build a side around him

This is the main point, we have seen him have very good games before but for whatever reason its hit and miss. Lets all hope that the message " be more consistant" is one he takes on board.

I notice in general the same people that are "give Nuno time it's only early" are also "get Tanguy in the team".

But I don't see how he fits into our new manager's system without ripping it all up and starting again.

The job of the 3 in midfield is defensive. The central one sits, the other two press the opposition full backs when they get on the ball around the half way line.

That's just not his game. He's isn't gonna follow the gameplan like a robot. He's gonna do what he wants when he wants. He'll hang a leg out half arsed, miss the tackle and shrug his shoulders.

But he is ridiculous talented on the ball. He could play as a 10 under a different manager with not such a strict defensive counter attacking system.

If you're backing "Nuno" then you have to accept his counter attacking football. And you have to accept "Tanguy" doesn't fit.

Personally I can't wait until both of them have left.

I think some of the reactions of our fans here and in the OMT to his performance were a little over the top. Yes, he looked like something which we've been missing in Nuno's workmanlike midfields, but its not as if he ran the game. The fact that we've been so devoid of creativity in games before this though, did make him stand out

When available, our best balance midfield is PEH, Ndombele and GLC. That's what I'd like to see Nuno work towards with their understudies this season being (in the same order) Skipp, Dele and Winks. Whether it suits what Nuno wants though remains to be seen.

Then we'll need to make a decision next summer on whether GLC and Ndombele are really the answers or whether injuries, laziness or whatever other reasons lead us to needing an upgrade.
I don't think it was his role to "run the game". Particularly after Bergwijn went off.

When we were playing with Gil in midfield he was the one tasked with getting further forward, Ndombele got more of the ball a bit deeper and at least ran the game for phases.

After the sub he was the one he getting further forward. Can't really run the game from there. We didn't get the ball to him enough though.

There are three ways to get him in the team.

1. He works hard enough, consistently enough to play one of the wider CM roles like he did yesterday. Possible perhaps, but will probably take time, certainly against better teams.

2. He plays the deeper central role currently occupied by Winks. Less running required, but needs to be switched on and smart about covering space consistently. Same as the first one, possible, but will probably take time.

3. A change of system.

Yesterday was a good showing in terms of work rate and doing the defensive bit consistently. Not a top level team, but a good one the game was played at a good pace and intensity.

Time will tell, but he offers too many solutions to the problems we face for Nuno not to make efforts to get him in the team as long as Ndombele works hard in training and games.

A change of system currently feels unlikely. In Emerson we've signed another full back that I think fit the current system. And even with many changes, including Doherty in who clearly isn't suited to this system Nuno stuck with it.

Yes, perhaps. The good thing is that last night was clear progress from him and more creativity than we've seen from any midfielder of ours this season. Lets hope he gets picked again on Sunday

Clear progress perhaps, but also a lot of what we saw last season under Mourinho.

First game of the season for him, couldn't have asked for much more imo.

Sunday, I don't know. If our injury concerns end up worst case perhaps he could get a role like the one Alli had against Palace. Think that would suit him a lot better than it does Alli.

Would be surprised to see him start in midfield for that one. Will be one of the toughest games of the season and I think Nuno will go with the tried and tested more defensively solid options. Find that difficult to disagree with for this game.

Should at least be seen as one of our first options off the bench if we need a goal, change of approach in the game after yesterday.

Why do we need to motivate players?
It's too difficult.
How to be that team where everyone is hungry to do their best on the pitch?

Because the upside is massive if we succeed.

Getting a team where everyone's hungry is easy enough. Getting a team where everyone's hungry and actually good enough to get us where we want to be is a lot more difficult.

Seems like Nuno is doing a good job with Ndombele so far, let's set how far he can go.

I didn't watch the game, so I can't really have an opinion of his overall play, but some of those moves and that passing in the highlights is exactly what we're missing. It's that exact type of vision and creativity that we need going forward. I'd go as far as to say that N'Dombele could be the difference between us having a pretty poor season to a pretty good one. That's why, IMO, it's so important to integrate him into the team and keep him fit and motivated. He can be that good.

Another frustrating thing for me with him is that I could see him leaving, going to a Barcelona or somewhere and being a massive success which would reflect so poorly on us again. Don't get me wrong, I hold him responsible for his lack of application rather than Poch/Jose/Nuno but he has it in his own hands to be the best midfield player in the league. He is that talented.

Is he gets his defensive work right now consistently, improves his stamina a bit, or plays in a team than can mask his deficiencies he could be a star anywhere. He's that good.

I agree. I think that the easiest place to fit him in is replacing Skipp at the base of midfield. I don't think that he can run 11k or has the positional awareness to play Dele or Højbjerg's roles. I think that he is a few months away from starting in the league, unless injuries force it on Nuno.

Probably. Still needs that positional awareness at the base of midfield though. Against teams in the lower half at least I hope that's seen as an option at least at some point in the not too distant future.

Depending on what happens in the next international break Lo Celso might be closer to a start than Ndombele.

I hope it's not a few months away, and obviously don't hope for further injury problems. But he'll probably have to prove himself defensively to Nuno before he gets the nod.

Hey, if nothing else, if the sit back and counter attack thing doesn't work in the first hour at least he's a good player to bring on from the bench.

I agree on Lo Celso. He is more attacking than the current midfield choices but offers a little more discipline than Ndombele. I think that Nuno is basically risk averse, so is going to struggle to accommodate Ndombele.

I think we're in pretty much perfect agreement on the players.

I'm hoping that Nuno's risk averse approach has been a short term solution during a chaotic start with a lot of different problems arising more or less continuously from he walked into the job until today.

Some of his decisions recently has made that hope seem a bit less realistic, but we'll see.

Impossible to judge, of the players he had to work with in pre season he is without dier/Sanchez/Son/Berg etc

then had Kane away, NDombele looking for a move etc. Not like he has really had anytime to properly Instill anything and of those he has he has lost most to injury
