Nuno Espírito Santo - Sacked

I really hope it wasn't about goals, because we never looked like scoring.

We quite literally couldn't have created less in terms of shots in that first half. And I fail to see how that was a surprise.

If it was just about trying to keep Palace at bay hoping that at could try to make something happen in the last 30 minutes through subs I guess fair enough. Not what I would heve wanted, but fair enough.
It was IMO 100% about playing players who can score

Nuno looked bereft of options and thus ideas yesterday and looked to try and drag a 0-0 or lucky 0-1. But the red card put pay to that. I feel sorry for Nuno atm

I agree with that general point. I'm rather certain we're not anywhere near where he wants us to be.

This particular game he had some options at least. Alli in midfield. Alli left in a front three instead of as a #10.

I think we will develop our play, Nuno definitely deserves time and the circumstances were really difficult in this game. Performances like this one though, that has to be the rare exception.

To quote Harry Brooks on twitter:
---
No idea what happened.

All I’ll say is if a Skipp, Hojbjerg, Dele midfield is unbalanced then a Skipp, Hojbjerg, Winks midfield might be the most unbalanced I’ve seen.

When I saw that midfield, not a chance Spurs were winning.
---

I don't think he had to send out the most unbalanced midfield ever seen. That's on Nuno, it's hopefully not something we'll see again any time soon or ever.

I agree on the midfield front, made a point on that in the match thread this morning - not sure why you would change the midfield from the first three games when you're forced in to changing things at the back

But its not about this first defeat in the PL. The performances and the approach has been negative leading up to this game. Remember after the Wolves and Watford matches there many on here discussing the problems and a lot of it was fobbed off with "we won." Today we didn't win so those same complaints that were had after those wins were obviously going to surface.

The performance yesterday wasn't surprising, its been coming. This is all very reminiscent of Jose's run last season. Solid defensive performances based on hard work and excessive numbers covering spaces, snatched counters, very little control in games, a glaring lack of creativity and very few goal scoring chances being made. Winning games this way wasn't sustainable last season and it won't be sustainable this season either.

I like Nuno and he was the man I wanted us to appoint after we sacked Poch so theres definitely no agenda or desire for hm to fail on my part. But again just like with Jose there are some obviously holes in the way we setup and if the coach wont address these issues he will come under scrutiny, just as he should.

But as in all games it is all about results so yes it is ( in this instance) about our first PL defeat. I I can't dance with most of what you say to be honest BUT its a work in progress. I think most of us can agree that we have been generally poor over the last couple of seasons overall for many reasons which we have all flogged to death and a start has been made by getting rid of some of the deadwood and bringing in players.

Now no one can say that these players are going be all top class ( most of us who know a bit about football can accept that MOST transfers are a gamble for lots of reasons) but four games into a new season is a bit hasty to say its failing ( imo). And i do not believe that the majority of fans are fobbing anyone off with " we won" and if you see it that way there is not much i can say that will change you mind.

I think most fair minded fans will accept that turning us around from the state we have been in since before Poch went is not a overnight job and will take that into account on judging a manager who has been in charge for FOUR prem games. As i have said elasewhere we were always going to stuggle with all the players we were missing ( for whatever reasons) and then to lose Dier ( who despite what some fans think about him he has been very good so far)) after minutes and then having Japhet sent of made the game even harder.

I have said elsewhere that we were poor yesterday for sure but all the doom and gloom that i have heard since is WAY over the top (imo), To be honest i am not saying you are in the doom and gloom section but a little bit of patience is what is needed otherwise we are never going to get anywhere.

After the first 10-15 mins we looked good against city.
Wolves we were solid and compact, contained them well and played the game sensibly. It was theur first home game, return of crowds, returning manager, they were always going to be up for it. But we were together, covered each other and matched them.
Watford we looked a bit ropey imv, cohesion wasn't quite there, not the same snap or covering.
Yesterday was awful, for all that there was effort from most it was misplaced, there was a huge hole in the team or an issue with the tactics.
First two games we were at it and fighting for each other, second two games we onky did it in patches.
There's an energy sapper in our team atm, and its either winks or kane.
Winks because he isn't good enough or suited to the tactics, or Kane because he can't be arsed.
Or both... But those two are not the only problem. Imo the biggest problem is Nuno's refusal to have any form of creativity in midfield. We're only set up to contain, and hope the front 3 will get a lucky chance, and take it.

We didn’t have a creative central midfielder available yesterday.

Ndombele. Gil.
"but Gil isn't a midfielder". Call him whatever the fudge you want, but he was everywhere in the ECL game, and he's certainly creative. So is Ndombele.
"Yeah, but Ndombele doesn't work hard enough"
Never seen him do less than f.ex Kane did yesterday.
Ndombele doesn’t want to be here
You know the same way you described Kane earlier I think?
Gil is a kid who has been here for about 21 days and played his under 21 games this week (as a winger). I think he will become a more central creative player as you describe but showing up in the ECL is different to the prem

Kane is a problem too.

Because he has games like yesterday where he allows the opposition to contain him, he’s better than that, he can only contain himself.
Harry is not super human. The team were dreadful yesterday especially after we lost Tanganga.
Let us all hope Nuno can sort it quickly.

He was bringing him for 30 minutes
He was willing to take a gamble
I like that myself
Although I don’t know who he was bringing off
So it’s possible he may well have stayed 4-3-3
Playing a midfield like he did yesterday is most certainly a gamble.

Options were limited, but there were options.

I'm honestly still baffled by that first half and that we kept with it for 15 minutes (or until the red card) on the second half.

We had three viable attacking outlets, the front three. Reguilon was left completely isolated on the left and Emerson clearly wasn't about to start taking players on by himself on the right.

Leaving us with no real attacking impetus from either full back. Obviously no final third action from Winks or Skipp. Hojbjerg tried a couple of times.

Palace defenders won't have an easier game this season I would guess.
