The Spanish Football Thread

Messi has had say on both player transfers (see how he supposedly put Romero into his contract renewal ask) and manager selection.

Barca has elected officials, I think you are being extremely naïve if you don't think he has had extreme levels of influence that has led the team down this path. If he had said I'm leaving if this president doesn't do "this", it would effectively be a job death sentence to disagree.

A huge part of their current issue is they did not sell Messi a couple of years ago, and kept buying players they couldn't afford to appease him of their "ambition"

I'm not saying he doesn't have influence or even a say on who they should go for. But he didn't negotiate the deals for the likes of coutinho, dembele, griezman, pjanic.
This isn't about messi. La liga are the only league in europe that didn't make allowances for covid regarding their ffp rules. They cut barcas wage limit from €640m to €180m (less than ours). They then offer them a deal from cvc, which would give them €275m and allow them to keep messi. But they would forgo 10% of their tv revenue and be tied in to the la liga for 40 years. Bye bye esl.

Now if you think that is all messi's fault, you are the one being naive.

I never said it's all Messi's fault, just he had a contribution to the downfall of the club he was crying crocodile tears for.

They have been clearly mismanaged with the last 3 years being window after window of big purchases with money they didn't have, so loans on top of loans.

Again, La Liga's rules are not new, nor a surprise, this is why the running of a club should never be a popularity contest.

La ligas rules are not new but covid was. Every other league in europe adjusted their financial rules as it massively hurt clubs financially. La liga cut barcas wage cap by over 2 thirds. Even though barca had restructured their debt. Then they put the cvc money on the table and told them sign and you can keep messi. Barca refused.

Yes barca have been mismanaged in the past. Yes messi's contract was too big (although if his wages were €50m a year, he's allegedly woth €137m a year to them in branding). Yes they need to cut the wage bill. But this goes far beyond that. This is a massive power struggle. In the end it will hurt both barca and la liga. Cause sponsors and tv rights value has just taken a hit.

Ha so it's la liga trying to stave off the esl?
If Barca let's Messi go, it may galvanize the fans around the ESL.

By then Messi could easily be back as ambassador for Barca and fans would blame la liga for forcing their hand.

More than just that. They want to curtail the power of madrid and barca and make the league more competitive. It's what they've been doing for the last 10 years.

Ok.. This is a (too long) summary of the muppet show that's been going on at Barca for the last decade. Before I start: Barca is owned and governed by it's members. The members (socios/socis in Spanish/Catalan) elect the President in a democratic election, which is flawed, because idiots can vote.

June 2010: Sandro Rosell (Lawyer with marketing background) is elected President. He had fierce rows with ex president Laporta, and resigned as vice president of sports in 2005, while Laporta was president. Rosell has been very critical of Laporta on numerous occations.

First alarm bell: The first thing Rosell did, was to strip Johan Cruyff of his role as Barcelona honorary president, because Rosell said he wasn't elected for the role.
https://t.co/RUL11ARSu8?amp=1

December 2010: Rosell signs a sponsorship agreement with Qatar Foundation that meant the logo would be on the front of the shirt. Barcelona had never had a shirt sponsor before.
https://t.co/txA352F7CZ?amp=1

Pep left Barca in 2012. It was no secret that Pep and Rosell did not work well together. This interview with Pep says it all. (Turn on subtitles)
https://t.co/9rsukxtTPo?amp=1

Summer 2013: Thiago moves to Bayern Munich, and a clause in the contract, signed by Rosell, ment that the release clause dropped from 90m to 18m if Barcelona did not meet certain elements in the contract, such as appearances.
https://t.co/wmpj2yPMPj?amp=1

June 2013: Eric Abidal is released, after fighting and winning his battle against cancer. Fans and other players did not respond well to it, even if he was 33 at the time. The timing was awful: Tito Vilanova was seriously ill from cancer.
They also fail to improve the squad with another CB, to ease the pressure on an ageing back line in Puyol and makeshift CB Mascherano. Fans are not happy with sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta and other executives.

July 2013:
Tito Vilanova has to resign because of his cancer illness. The whole club is in chock. At the same time, Rosell is more than happy about winning the battle to get Neymar. This is when the real madness starts.

Neymar did not cost €57,1m as Rosell said. The real figure was closer to €90m. There are still questions to where some of that money went. Members demanded to know where/how the money was spent.
Rosell resigned in January 2014.
https://t.co/DHOb9MOK3f?amp=1

January 2014: Vice President Josep Bartomeu becomes President. In the summer he buys Douglas from Santos for €5,5m. He plays 8 games for Barca, and is one of several brazilians bought by Bartomeu, that are nowhere near good enough.

After having lost 1-0 to Real Sociedad, Bartomeu calls for a new election. The following month, police start investigating both Bartomeu and Rosell for tax fraud connected to the Neymar deal.
https://t.co/527njJS6l4?amp=1

May 2015: Barca win the triple by beating Juve in the CL final. In the euphoria following that, Bartomeu is re-elected as President! Thousands have warned that this would be catastrophic, but are not heard.

Summer 2015: Barca need replacement(s) for Xavi, and spend €60m on Arda Turan, and on Sevilla reserve right back(!) Aleix Vidal. Because of a FIFA ban, none of them can be registered until january 2016.

Spring/summer 2016: Barca finally discover that Aleix Vidal isn't really a right back. It gets worse when Dani Alves leaves in June. Alves is furious with Bartomeu, and accuse him of lying and treating players badly.
https://t.co/Z74gRvuBQc?amp=1

Bartomeu spends around €130m on Andre Gomes, Samuel Umtiti, Paco Alcacer, Lucas Digne, Jasper Cillesen and Denis Suarez. Supporters are long since scratching their head, wondering wtf is going on.

April 2017: Bartomeu faces trial over the Neymar transfer, with the prosecutor asking 5 years prison for tax fraud and corruption. Same goes for ex President Rosell.
https://t.co/ksXhQMqM72?amp=1

One month later Rosell is arrested, accused of money laundering. Alarm bells are deafening!
https://t.co/OcOHjhSrRP?amp=1

Later, former presidential candidate Benedito starts a motion of censure against Bartomeu. He does not succeed. Somehow, Bartomeu still has a large support amongst fans and press.

August 2017: PSG pays €222m for Neymar, triggering his releas clause. Barca goes full panic mode, and splashes out €150m on Ousmane Dembele!! Later, Bartomeu spends €160m on Coutinho, with a salary of over €20m a year!
https://t.co/Gzsfc2Zc6x?amp=1

Money isn't tight with Bartomeu in charge! Busquets, Alba, Umtiti, Sergio Roberto, Rakitic and Luis Suarez all get insanely good renewed contracts, and Dembele and Coutinho are neither fit nor good enough.

April 2019: 16 year old Ilaix Moriba signs a new contract with Barca. The contract is leaked to Espanyol. It reveals an insane salary for a teenager.
https://t.co/vdF1l2akCp?amp=1

June 2019: Barca and Valencia swap goalkeepers. Both Neto and Cillessen are valued at €35m, but the transfers fees are spread over different years. Cillessen is sold in 18/19, Neto bought in 19/20, to cook the books and make it appear as Barca made profit in 18/19.

Later that year, Barca spend another €120m on Griezmann. They also try to get Neymar back, also trying to include Dembele in the deal, without success.
https://t.co/NVg3ZlNTYy?amp=1

January 2020: Barca sell forward Carles Perez to Roma, as there is no room for him in the squad. Then Dembele gets injured (again), and Barca are short on forwards. They somehow gets clearance to sign Martin Braithwaite, outside the transfer window!
https://t.co/X8MzzUr4TK?amp=1
This despite Barca having bought Matheus Fernandes on the final day of the window, and instantly loaning him to Valladolid.

February 2020: It's reveled that Barca have paid I3 Ventures €1m to write negatively and damaging posts on social media about among others, Pep, Puyol, Xavi, Laporta and Pique! Also known as Barcagate.
https://t.co/tAYBcLwMWo?amp=1

Pique asks for an explanation from Bartomeu, who in turn says he's got no idea what's been going on. Pique believes Bartomeu, but is furious when it turns out that the person that ordered the services from I3, is still working at the club.
https://t.co/3LPmlT0n9K?amp=1

In the summer of 2020, Barca gets rid of Arthur (23) in exchange for Pjanic (30). The deal makes no sense from a sporting point, but with some wizard accounting, both clubs seemingly make a profit!
https://t.co/jS1i2H5UDK?amp=1

Barca lose 8-2 to Bayern in the CL. Messi accuses Bartomeo of lies and breaking several promises, and Messi wants to leave.
https://t.co/kEboErEf4T?amp=1

Luis Suarez is sold to Atletico Madrid for mere change. Suarez slams Bartomeu over his treatment.
https://t.co/4sgPr9esTg?amp=1

Bartomeu and the board resign in October 2020, leaving the club with huge finacial debt, insane player salaries, making it virtually impossible to get rid of players not wanted.

Joan Laporta takes over as President in Mars 2021, inheriting this mess of a club.
https://t.co/z6psNxH6I1?amp=1

This is by no means everything. Far from it! This is just the tip of the iceberg. The reality is that the club has been so mismanaged that Messi is not even allowed to play for free, even if he wanted to.

Nice work. It has been shockingly run.

I've said it before though. If we had the la liga wage cap rules in the prem, the majority of clubs would be in the same position as barca (especially as they don't take into account covid). I really want the wage cap introduced.

One month later Rosell is arrested, accused of money laundering. Alarm bells are deafening!

In the summer of 2020, Barca gets rid of Arthur (23) in exchange for Pjanic (30). The deal makes no sense from a sporting point, but with some wizard accounting, both clubs seemingly make a profit!

Thanks and interesting read.
How not to run a club.!

Laporta “As of today, the debt is €1,350 million. The economic and patrimonial situation is very worrying and the financial situation is dramatic." Via Press conference

renderTimingPixel.png

Laporta: "We arrived and the club had already received 50% of the TV rights in advance."

Laporta: "We have a salary bill that represents 103% of the club's total income."

Laporta: "Barça have a negative net worth of 451 million euros."

Laporta: "The sports payroll is 617 million euros, between 25% and 30% more than our competitors."

fudging hell, Barca are a fudging mess and a scam

Apparently they paid someone €8M to go watch matches/scout in South America (how did I miss out on this gig?)

More (translated buy a guy on reddit)

Laporta:The salary policy that we stumbled upon from the previous board is wrong, it's what the experts call the inverted pyramid, where veterans have long contracts and young players have short ones, and that makes it very difficult to renegotiate contracts.

Laporta: "The previous board had someone to discover talents in South America. He charged 8 million euros, an inappropriate amount."

Laporta: "There was a modus operandi to bypass the club's internal controls, split invoices, as in the case of I3 Ventures, or go through the Assembly. This method was also used for Espai Barça and in the Departments of Marketing and Computer Science."

Laporta: "In Bartomeu's letter he spoke of another 90M salary cut planned. The truth is that the players didn't even want to talk to him." Also how the 68m wage reduction is not a reduction rather a payment to be paid at the end of contracts of players.

Laporta: "CVC was to mortgage television rights for half a century, and it is not structured as an income but as a debt. The legal structure is not that they make a payment to us, it is like a loan."

Laporta:

He said we forgave Neymar for 16 million euros, that's another lie.

I would like to remind Bartomeu of all the damage the Neymar deal has done to Barcelona's image.

There were 4 open issues with Neymar, and we thought it was in the best interests of Barcelona to settle and avoid more risks. Laporta: They received 222 million in the Neymar deal and spent it at the speed of light and inappropriately

Being very angry on getting called out to not sell Barca corporate as it's short term and selling all barca image worldwide and how Camp nou needed 118 critical repairs to welcome fans safely and not be fined. He also sanctioned a loan of 520million to restructure the debt and maintain club's liquidity.

There must be a couple of youngsters we can nick from them that would be worthwhile.
