What a fcukin' joke those outdoor games have been in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. A totally mismanaged attempt at the shallowest form of marketing. We're sick of this phoney Beatlemania. Stick to what works in the places that let it work. FFS.

All the fault of NHL Commissioner Gary 'Bobblehead' Bettman. He's obsessed with trying to force-feed ice hockey into sun belt markets like Arizona and Florida where there is very little natural interest. And, clearly, very little in the way of natural elements to support outdoor NHL hockey.

The NHL was smart to grant Seattle a franchise where the Thunderbirds - "DAAA Birrds!" - junior hockey club has done very well over past decades. Loved covering games there. A highlight was being stuck in mid-afternoon traffic and hearing on the car radio the debut playing of Nirvana's Nevermind album. The new NHL Kraken franchise is being capably overseen by the very talented and experienced Tim Leiweke. They will be a great success.

But the whole Arizona experiment has been a colossal failure and the present ownership group are setting new, low standards for fiscal mismanagement, sponsor relations and employee morale. An unnamed third party - widely suspected to be the NHL - has hired a Chicago law firm to investigate the many, many claims of managerial misdeeds, including sexual harassment of female employees by the owner's son.

Add in the schittshow that is the Florida Panthers - who basically play in a soulless near-empty rink in a suburban Miami parking lot - and it's clear the NHL's efforts to force feed Canada's game to American sunbelt markets has reached its saturation point. They've done very well in Tampa Bay, Las Vegas and Dallas, less so in Raleigh, North Carolina. And been a dismal failure in Atlanta.

Not sure that Nashville, Tennessee is classed as a sunbelt town, but the NHL there is an absolute roaring success. Maybe one of the top 2 or 3 venues to see a game live. Great gameday atmosphere to watch the Predators play.

Time to move the Panthers north to Quebec City where a new, state-a-de-art 18,000-seat arena awaits in a fabulous city where NHL hockey once thrived and is ready to resume its NHL role. And shift the Arizona failure to the massive market of Houston where money and a suitably located arena await.

Other than that, Go Leafs Go.

So, if you'se'uns are enjoying the hockey, naturally there's a bit of culture around it. This first short clip was done exclusively for the internet as the two principal characters (the farm boys), who wrote, produced and acted in the skits, pursued a proper TV series deal.

Quoting the lines is a bit of a rite of passage. Scores of young Canadian hockey players - and older beer leaguers - who can recite it by heart.

A little glossary:

Wheel. Snipe. Celly. = Skate fast, shoot for a goal, celebrate.
Dirty dangles = Skillful stickhandling of the puck to get past an opponent or fake out a goalie.
Hundy P = 100 % (works every time)

So, the Youtube skits worked, they got turned into a weekly series on national TV and they've had nine seasons of Letterkenny. They tried to re-visit the classic chirping dialogue in this later episode.

An ice hockey referee has been banned by the NHL after being caught on a microphone saying he wanted to call a penalty against one of the teams he was officiating.

Tim Peel was wearing a microphone during the Nashville Predators' win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday.

After giving a questionable tripping decision against a Predators player, Peel was heard saying, "It wasn't much, but I wanted to get a penalty against Nashville early" before his microphone was cut off.

"There is no justification for his comments, no matter the context or his intention, and the National Hockey League will take any and all steps necessary to protect the integrity our game," said an NHL statement.

Peel, 54, who has refereed over 1,300 NHL games, was due to retire at the end of the season in April.

How did I miss this post?! HUGE Letterkenny fan right here, as mentioned before the wife is Canadian so we watch a few shows here and there with a few bags of imported all dressed and dill picklers.

Avalanche looking absolutely fantastic right now, I don't want to get too excited but good lord MacKinnon, Makar and Rantanen looking brilliant and Landeskog starting to look a bit captain clutch at times.

Also, Maple Leafs hahahahahahahaha shouldn't laugh really, it's all very Spurs isn't it.

I covered that game last night. They let in 550 health care workers for free and gave them all free food and team jerseys. I hoping a fair few of them are psychiatric counsellors.

Yes, Spurs and the Leafs are a great comparison. Wealthy, big market clubs with great support and a knack for absolutely gagging at critical moments.

Awesome, do you have a site or blog where you put any of your work up?

They missed so many sitters in game 7! Incredible. I don't think I've ever seen such incompetency from so many NHL players in the same match. :p

If you haven't seen this yet, it's from game 1 of the Montreal-Winnipeg series. Winnipeg, down 4-3 late in the game, pull their goalie for an extra attacker (common hockey tactic) but give up an empty-net goal to Montreal's Jake Evans. Racing back to try to prevent the goal, Winnipeg's Mark Scheifele - not known as a dirty player - absolutely blows up a defenceless Evans, who hits his head violently on the ice has to be stretchered off semi-conscious.

Scheifele, who is 6'3" and about 210 lbs, was suspended for four games and never got to return to the ice since Montreal went on to sweep the best-of-seven series in four straight games. They now await the winner of the pulsating Colorado-Las Vegas series.

Evans, 3 inches shorter and 30 lbs lighter than Scheifele, was treated by the Canadiens team doctor in the arena and never required hospital treatment. But he remains sidelined in accordance with concussion protocols.

The two sports teams I follow are known for bottling it. Avs throwing away a 2-0 series lead and are now down 3-2. Will be tough to get through this one. :(

Damn, that is one insane hit. You can't do that, obviously, but you can understand Scheifele doing everything he can to prevent the goal, and getting a bit desperate. What was the official penalty he got? Charging?

Yeah. When one slows down the replay, it's clear that he actually hit Evans cleanly under the rules of hockey - stick down, arms down, not targeting the opponent's head.

But he made no attempt to play the puck and stop the goal. Had he at least made that attempt and still collided with Evans, then he'd be exonerated. But he just blew him up. Shameful.

That said, I've covered Scheifele since he was a 14 year old and never once thought of him as a dirty player. Fast, skillful, hard and fair would have been my take on him. Now? Ooh. He's a marked man for sure. Lot of players out there who are Habs fans, but wearing other teams jerseys. They'll relish giving him a pit of payback.

Still, if he said he wanted to play for my Toronto Maple Leafs, I'd have him in a heartbeat.

Colorado Avalanche are red hot this season, just won their 18th straight home game. The team with the most points in the entire league. Young guns and more experienced players firing on all cylinders. Our star man Nathan MacKinnon has only recently kicked into form as well.

We usually fudge it up at some point in the playoffs, do a sexy choke, and I'm a bit worried about the consistency of our number one goalie, who's not my favorite to say the least, but at least he had some phenomenal saves in tonight's game.

But what a season it's been. Scoring goals left right and center, and are just such entertainers. I've only been able to catch a few games live, but just pure joy to watch. It's time for a new Stanley cup trophy. :D
