Gareth Bale

But let's be clear

- If someone said £10M for Bale +60K/week, no one would blink and that's pretty much what it is ..

I'd hope some one would, that's a lot of money to be laying down on a past reputation and a player with questionable motivation going forward.
I'm more of school of thought that that money could be the difference between a Sissoko or a mane, a sanchez or a dias.

@FatBloke has it right

- bale score goals, he scores big goals, he changes matches
- Those things are expensive

If he had no fitness issues and was at full ability, his price would be very different.

It comes down to the argument of

- Is it essential to have him play every game or does him affecting 25 odd games a season make a difference.

To me, in most seasons 6-8 points is the difference between success (CL) and failure for us

- Do I think Bale would get us 6 more points over the course of a season? = yeah, I do.

Re the motivation/fitness thing, I'd hope the club now has a much clearer picture now and hence can make the right call.

Purely because I'm bored and really there's no right or wrong answer, how many points would having dias as cb instead of sanchez for instance save us?

What if we paid 10m more for Sanchez?

It's not as simple as saying Diaz is much better than Sanchez and only cost 10m more.

Dias would have got us CL no question

The problem is Dias isn't still at Benfica, i.e. it wasn't a Skrinar situation where sure, £5/£10M might have done it, City wanted him, they would have just kept cranking the number up until we folded, that is the economic reality of playing with cheaters.

I think the real decision made last season was Reguilon (who from all commentary was opportunistic as we have been looking at him for a while)
- Wages wasn't the issue for the CB (and that's all Bale affected)

- Don't buy Reguilon, take the money for him + Rodon probably would have got you Skrinar
- Maybe Skrinar has the impact Dias did, maybe not, hindsight is always that way.

We took a calculated risk that the squad without that CB would be good enough to carry the year, then hopefully plan was to go for that CB this window. It didn't work out.

As I've hinted at above, it's all hypotheticals.
Bale scored this season, doesn't mean he will next.
It's the future, we don't know.
Boredom is a terrible thing.

Fair point. And I absolutely agree that a top class CB should be our priority signing.

But in asking "What about Dias?" you have to factor in the chances of us getting another Sanchez, or any other defender who doesn't hit the ground running. Even Thiago Silva looked pretty brick before Christmas, and I thought he was about as low-risk a defender as you could sign.

We know what Bale can and can't do. If he's motivated, and used correctly, he will win us points against lower-level teams.

I heard that we were interested in Real cast-off, but it was Hazard rather than Bale

Would be an interesting signing. If Poch really is returning, perhaps Hazard can slip into the old Eriksen role (creator in advanced areas)

Sit down for this.....
Get some whiskey....

We paid pretty much the same for Sissoko as Liverpool did for Mane.........

Is this a joke? I'm hoping you have been hiding under a rock for 2 years and just missed the news

Hazard for Madrid is the worse signing any club has ever made
- Turns out his true transfer fee was over 140M (or some crazy brick like that)
- Guy turned up fat and out of shape for his first season after "dream move"
- He's had more injury days than Bale, Lamela and Lo Celso combined
- Lamela has outscored him over the last two seasons

There was a player there but the guy is the poster boy for couldn't give a brick anymore ..

I wouldnt really care about that. If it was a loan in a similar way to the Bale deal, and if our new man thought he fitted into the new system, then it would be a similar style punt to the Bale one

Last thing Spurs needs is another player with questionable motivation

Something tells me he will come back to us for next season and he knows what the plans are from the chairman.

Only reason being is that he is still making appearances on spurs social media platforms, when clearly the season is over.
