Christian Eriksen

Another player who left to win things and actually won things.

Modric
Bale
Eriksen
Walker
Berbatov

Has there been a key player that has left us and not gone on to win things at other clubs? (Players we wanted to keep).

Stephen Carr?

another one that Kane will be watching. If we don't match the ambition of some of the best players to wear the colours, then don't blame them going elsewhere.

Eriksen, like Walker, showing Kane what he is missing out on, and you'd be foolish to think he's not watching.

We have missed him big time eh. Missing him even more because we also had a manager that didn't know the meaning of midfield possession and creativity since Poch left tbf

You swap Fernandes into our team and either of Lo Celso or NDombele into Man Utd's and i'd imagine we'd have seen the opposite in terms of overall numbers

lads, behave. Did you read what we bid for Fernandes? Conditional on winning the league and Champs League. fudge me, that was classic Champ Manager 97/98 when you bid £100m for Ronaldo and the algorithm was too basic and only considered total offer.

Serious question, apart from Ndombele who was relatively less established than say, Fernandes etc, when have we gone big on a transfer?

Arsenal buying Aubameyang for example?
United buying Fernandes?

We don't do that. Levy doesn't do that.

When we have the chance to go for Mane, we go for N'Jie.

oh we've bought quality don't get me wrong. But rarely have we gone for a big name key signing that is head and shoulders going to improve your team.

I'm talking a marquee signing, someone who's already a top player in their position that will effectively elevate the squad immediately. Like i said, Ozil, Aubameyang, Mahrez, Pulisic, Bruno Fernandes, one of those.

We've signed well, but never someone as a marquee signing. Maybe Rafa VDV? and that was what, 10 years ago?

Ozil was a panic buy and wasn't really needed by Arsenal at the time.
Aubameyang? Fair point, though he was replacing a player they really didn't want to see go in Sanchez (who carried them most of the time he was there)
Mahrez? Really? Did you know who he was before he came to Leicester? And do you think he was seen as Marquee by Pep rather than an expensive semi-luxury inside-foward?
Pulisic? Really? Marquee??
Bruno Fernandes? Good player who we wee also in for at a time. But marquee??

Marquee is sometimes how players are described AFTER they've played and been seen as a success. We've had a few of those as have other clubs.

When i think Marquee i mean if kane was to ben signed. Or Mbappe, Haaland etc . The kind of players that will almost double season-ticket sales/applications overnight.

That's been relatively rare across most leagues in recent years tbh

If Ndombele had had a better first season he'd have been easily described as Marquee. Like him or think he's lazy, he's a baller and can definitely be seen on the surface as marquee...whether he ends up fulfilling that description or not, well...

Maybe, but he was renowned as being one of the best No10s in world football, and his first few years at Arsenal proved that. Whether he was a panic buy is irrelevant

I'm talking about Mahrez being signed after winning the league with Leicester. Again, how he is seen by Pep is irrelevant. He was one of the best wingers in the league and available for a chunky price sure, but is still one of the best wingers in the league and will improve any team in the division.

Pulisic? Really? Marquee??

Pulisic was one of the best prospects to come out of the German league in years, the second biggest sale in Dortmund history.

Bruno Fernandes? Good player who we wee also in for at a time. But marquee??

As above, one of the biggest established names still residing in the Portuguese league. And we were clearly in for him, but with a paltry offer to show for it.

I get your point and not trying to be argumentative, but we've shown time and time again, especially with Daniel Levy, that when a specific requirement needs to be filled in the squad, he goes for the cheaper option. And in some cases, we're talking a matter of millions.

This is also true for sales of players. Instead of getting Danny Rose off the books entirely, he argued with Watford over a few million and now we're still funding him to sit with the U23s.

Until he's taken off the process and we bring a DoF, the same will continue.

@Diamond Lights You highlight the Danny Rose case but how often have we marvelled at the fee Levy has extracted from other clubs for journeymen? You win some, you lose some, but odds on DL wins way more than he loses.
It was definitely that way in the past but it does feel like he’s either lost his touch or player power is so much bigger now, where from the position we were sitting they don’t want to take a step down on prestige or wages.

Eriksen I think is an outlier that Levy agreed to keep him as he was irreplaceable within the confines of the stadium build - a very un Levy liek decision. I’ve still never really understood what the Toby situation was - had a low release clause and was playing well, thought he’d sit tight, Poch took exception to this due to the ‘collective’ but still not sure why no one came in for him? Maybe the plan was post stadium we can offer the bigger wages to have kept a couple of those whose contracts were running down?

It feels like an age since we had a good selling window, looking back it seems to have also been around 2017, which probably coincided with us being an attractive place to just be a squad member?

Whilst I still don’t expect a cash injection from ENIC, this summer will need DL to find a way of taking a financial (book) hit to free up squad places and wages to fund incomings, even if they aren’t particularly expensive. A good window for me would be a liquid one as as opposed to a just looking at net spend. (Not withstanding the players we get in are fit for purpose which would be reason to have a DoF involved!)
