Gareth Bale

A few minutes before he was subbed he sprinted back to make an interception just outside our box.

I don't think it's a lack of willing in defence, more that he's one of the players we want to be in space in a transition.

he did indeed

need to get the ball back before we can transition it

Even with Madrid paying 50 or 60% of his wages Bale remains the highest earner in the history of Spurs and this is his contribution after a full week’s rest

Scoring that hatrick last week was the worst thing that could have happened.
Papered over his faults, especially in a game against a team that works hard.
He is done at this level.

Great player for about half of the games of the season. Just need to not start him in the other half of the games. If that makes him worth the money it's another question.

Very poor today; his lack of effort defensively will be exposed time and time again.

In a 4-2-3-1, I dont think that lack of tracking back can work. Maybe if you play 4-3-3 and have the right man behind him, but then you're setting up a team to work for him. Is he that good that its worth doing that?

Precisely the sort of role that Golfer Bale should have for Tottenham, as a goal scoring super-sub when opponents are starting to flag and we can just leave him to goal hang like this other pensioner.

Man United can afford to spunk that sort of money at someone like that, I’m not sure we can.

Also, what’s his motivation going to be like without a International tournament to be fit for in the summer.

Not MotM today, but Bale was quality every time he got on the ball. A joy to watch when he's in the mood like that.

Maybe it's partly down to the end of the season and some teams are already 'on the beach,' but he seems so much happier and more confident all round since JM departed. Leaves me wondering how come the Specious One could not tease that kind of performance out of him more often?

(Same goes for Dele of course, but this is the Bale thread.)

I may be in the minority but i still do not see anything to show we should keep him here for another year. The money we pay him could be better spent on a player who will play more and give us more.

I think its a tough call. Bale is a loan, assume zero fee, but £10m say in wages

If we sign a younger guy, say 21-24 years old, we might spend £30m on the fee plus say £5m in wages. However this guy has a re-sale value

Even if only say half that fee is paid up-front, we have a higher outlay in year 1 for the younger guy, when cash is tight.

Bale's impact has been up and down, and people will target his lack of back-tracking, so we'd need to have to work out how to cover it

also obviously need to see whether the new guy plays with wingers. A 3-at-the-back manager wouldnt have the need for Bale

I can't dance with any of those points, i know he has done well in s ome game but he has been crap in others. We all read the story about him wanting to make sure he was fit for Wales this summer and was using us to help him achieve that. IF there is any truth in that then screw him and if that is the case it would explain why over recent weeks he has looked better. As i say i am sure that others will dismiss that will like him back for another year but not for me.

I get where you're coming from, but its a tough call IMO. The biggest problem with it I think is that for most of this season we've had a manager who was ultra-defensive and didn't try to accomodate Bale, and therefore he's not played much. Difficult to tell therefore whether he truly can still contribute consistently over a full PL season

I think we all wanted Bale to be a hit and got carried away at the time of the signing, but i really think he has been poor ( or not what we hoped for at least)for most of the games he has played in and has not really done in in enough games against the better sides. But as i say i accept there are many who will disagree with that.
