Next Manager?

I’m not sure about Potter for a number of reasons. My biggest worry would be exactly that above.

We have a squad which has now blamed two managers when things have gone wrong, rather than look to their own deficiencies. And most are big name (or at least quite big name) players. I just can’t see Potter having the gravitas, the knowhow or the experience to deal with big players who are established at the club, and who may not rate him or his methods.

The counter argument is, of course, that Poch had to do exactly that at the beginning of his time. We were a smaller club then, though - an awful lot has changed.
An awful lot has changed I agree but the game is still quite basic and players are still human beings
I think what fans want from a manager doesn’t really exist for us IMO (or isn’t attainable)
People seem to think the right manager would keep Kane happy, but who would that be? Jose kept him happy but everyone else was unhappy
People want a manager who has experience but also want a younger dynamic manager so there’s a contradiction there
It’s difficult to assess gravitas on face value but it’s important. Poch couldn’t speak English very well so I wonder how he managed it when he joined. It did take him a Year to really embed his philosophy and that’s what brought the players with him
The way I see if is that in most leagues clubs promote managers who do well in the lower elements of the league (look at contes CV before he went to Juve)
In England the view seems to be recruit a ready made manager but that means gambling on a manager working out in potentially a more costly way.
I want a manager who can coach, a manager who has shown he can improve players, and a manager who has flexibility in his style (something we suffered form with a Pochs tactics sometimes as we didn’t have the Plan B). Potter has done just that at Brighton
But I’ll add Ive said all along we wouldn’t appoint him in my opinion. It’s too brave a call for the club and goes completely against the trend.

You know that Poch wanted a small right squad
And Poch prioritised certain comps
I mean what your describing is exactly what Poch did... also down to excluding certain players
And the player GB knows has been a failure at Brighton despite having a big fee invested in him. It happens at every club. And those players generally blame the coach rather than themselves. It’s why footballers are quite pandered too

In hindsight poch prioritising the bigger prize was a mistake.
An f a or league cup win would have got a monkey off our back and gave him more time.
A failure on his and levys part.

Poch did make those mistakes
Some will say it’s because he didn’t have the squad but he chose the squad numbers and made a lot of comments about wanting a smaller squad
Pochs biggest mistake IMO was not refreshing his coaches and not having that new voice

No reason to think prioritizing the cups would have seen us do any better in them

I'm just trying to find out more info on Steve Hitchen.

From what I can tell he got the job of chief scout based on being Comolli's right hand man, and that he was the man who helped Liverpool sign Suarez.

Was head of European scouting for QPR and then worked at Derby.

Now he holds our fate in his hands.

Fair point, and one that goes some way to explaining why Poch failed to win anything when push came to shove. Running out of gas at the end of the season, mentally if not physically (not every year, admittedly), the core players being "done" after a few years. The flip side of that is, well, we couldn't afford to have top class backups for every position.

I should note that I was and am a huge fan of what Poch did for this club. When he came in, we sat just below the Big 4 and would have happily finished each season in a Europa League place if it meant a League Cup win. Unfortunately we became a junior member of the Big SIX before being able to go all-out for that cup win.

I haven't paid too much attention to Potter and Brighton, and honestly have no idea who GB Danish knows, but Brighton have certainly played some nice football. If there's good evidence of Potter improving players and having the nous to alter tactics before and during games, let's have him. Preferably with Mason somewhere in his staff.

I thought clubs could only have squads of 25 players (plus youngsters)?

It is me that knows the girlfriend of a brighton player but every other point you make is valid and might be proved right.

Am not against him as long as the chairman gives him time, we also have far better attackers then brighton.

danish knows a midfielder they signed under Hughton
Since signing him they have added other players and he isn’t getting as much game time as he would like, hence why he isn’t a happy player
It’s normal and if I was Potter I’d be annoyed if he wasnt unhappy
What I don’t know is why he isn’t getting selected but they do have some decent midfielders there

For whatever reason, things went stale. People blame Levy for not buying players, but I don't buy that. He largely backed the manager, just (rightly) couldn't afford to break the wage structure. Poch's system rarely allowed players to come straight in and make a difference. Whatever. The lemons went stale.

I don't blame Levy for the Mourinho disaster either. I've loved to hate Mourinho since he first went to Chelsea, but I 100% thought that Levy had made the right call. At the moment, our hold on the top tier of English football is tenuous. I have no idea what the right answer is.

Sorry.., I meant you
And we have world class attackers that could work well if he can get his philosophy nailed here
He did it very very quickly at Brighton and that’s what impressed me and made me take notice
Turning Lewis a dunk into a quality CB with the ball

I don’t know what we do next
Whatever we do it a gamble
And whoever comes in needs time
We can’t IMO appoint a manager with baggage from a rival club... that hurt Mourinho before a ball was kicked
We also have to get a manger in that will work with the players and coach them. I actually believe part of the problem with our squad is stupid players who literally have to be told what to do, to use their talents. Son and moura fall into that category straight away and I think most of our defence do too

I see and do you at least acknowledge he would in all likelihood do an outstanding job and should therefore (if at all attainable) we should pursue him or are you in this bizarre camp of not wanting him because you have some irrational dislike of him?

In all likelihood?
Based on what?
Winning as many Scottish League titles as his predecessor Ronny Deila?

Failing at the first hurdle season after season in Europe?
12/13 - Knocked out in the last 32 of the Europa League with Liverpool
13/14 - Didn't qualify with Liverpool
14/15 - Didn't make through the Champions League Group stage, then knocked out in the Europa League last 32 with Liverpool
16/17 - Bottom of the Champions League Group with Celtic
17/18 - Didn't make through the Champions League Group stage, then knocked out in the Europa League last 32 with Celtic
18/19 - Lost in the Champions League qualifying rounds, then knocked out in the Europa League last 32 with Celtic
20/21 - Knocked out in the Europa League last 32 with Leicester

Being the first manager at Liverpool since the 50s to spend three seasons as manager and not win a trophy.
One good season with Liverpool (2nd) and two where they finished 7th and 6th.
Liverpool's bottle job and Leicester's last season.

His failure to control the Leicester dressing room.

Yes it would all be better to watch than Mourinho but don't expect anything better Martin Jol era results.

We absolutely have to get over that.

What if the best person for the job was Arsene Wenger. He’s obviously not, it’s just an example, the slate should always be clean. Any new manager is going to want to do a good job irrespective of their previous employers.

T&C’s apply, not dippers obviously.
