Gareth Bale

I can definitely see that point of view. I just think that's one of several ways.

Defending against City is tough even in good conditions. To give three players more limited defensive responsibility, leaving a back four and three midfielders to do the brunt work will be a massive ask. It's a plan that can backfire just as easily as not starting Bale imo.

Our would also probably necessitate dropping quality for work rate in deeper areas, which will make it more difficult to get the best out of our attacking players.

I'll be happy enough to see Bale start, but I think it will be a gamble and I don't think it's an obvious decision.

If we were going to try a low block with a solid defensive structure (haha) and a clinical counter attack (again haha) we should have kept Jose on for this game. Let's show balls, let's play to our strengths which is three arguably world class forwards.

Let them worry about us as well, let us utilise our strengths rather than try to compensate for our weaknesses.

If we are to lose, let's lose fighting hard and on the front foot.

For all the Bale isn't hard working/ defensively makes us weaker etc.. He's still a very good finisher and passer/crosser. His skill level on these are right up there imo. Therefore whomever we are playing are going to have to worry about him as if they don't Bale with time and space will hurt a team. The fullback will have to think twice about going up the pitch.

Did you watch the Spurs Arsenal match? Remember their goal from open play? No attacking team is going to worry about attacking on his side.

That’s nice in theory, but City dominate the ball against practically every team. It’s not as simple as play our best forwards and we will ‘be on the front foot’. You will need to win the ball against them several times and unfortunately that isn’t something Bale is renowned for. Son, Moura and Dele are all forwards that press and turnover the ball especially Moura. We will need those things against City otherwise our forwards are barely going to have the opportunity to do anything....

I am reading the posts with a chuckle. I too was in the Bale is being mismanaged school of thought when he first came. No longer!

One - he is a liability when one needs to defend. In most tactics, the modern day winger helps out in defence. Two - either he is inconsistent or he picks what games he plays well in.

For Spurs, looking at forward line - he is only second to Kane in offensive ability. Ignoring Bale's desire, the manager will have to think of a position where Bale's defensive liability is a non-issue.

I'm saying that Bale having an average day defensively is perfectly fine with me if he gives us a third world class point of attack along with Son and Kane. Let the others in the team do the other work, and let the front three defensive's work be limited to the high, press, backed when need by Sissoko or Lucus, with it primary purpose is to stop quick transitions from City and allow us to reset in a mid block.

Our own transitions needs to be fast, and I personally would be working on blind out balls down the channels and/or based on where City's defenders usually stay when they are squeezing teams, this will help emmensely when we are under the kosh (which we will be). I want son and lucas and Bale to stay high enough to chase these with support thus either preventing City from playing too high a line. Or exposing them to some threat if they do.

All of the above could be outdated shortsighted tactics. As I'm no football manger, but I do manage people, and one thing I have found to be consistent, is that you give the most talented people the best chance to succeed by allowing their strengths to shine and using others to cover their deficiencies.

And Bale may not be the player he once was, but he is still:
1.supremely talented
2.one of our most potent weapons
3.big game player,
4.has a point to prove.

You have to play Bale.
There is a reason he was no longer getting have at Real Madrid. We've seen with this effort levels and indication of this. (I watched him at Madrid, so I already knew this was the case).

Their goal was entirely down to Doherty being useless. It wasn't an overload, it was 1 v 1, Tierney Vs Doherty and Doherty got beaten just by the drop the shoulder. Absolute brick from Doherty.

Now Bale was poor in that game very poor actually and didn't help Doherty at all but the goal in particular had nothing to do with Bale. It had to do with the RB being incapable of doing the basics of fronting up to his attacker. Let's not change history to make Bale worse than he's actually been.

That's true.

I liked Doherty and had a lot of hope when he joined. But I genuinely can't remember one of our players having a stinker that bad in the last decade.

Everything he touched turned to Sissoko.

It was 100% on Doherty
But the lack of cover that side was being exposed all game
That exposure is on bale to help with
Help your full backs out in defence and they can help you in attack I

How many people would get him back for a second season?

Given money is tight do we spend it on bale or use it on someone else?
Would rather buy someone like Sekou Koita. Can play across the front line but naturally a lefty, had that classic cut in and shoot game but also a very good passer and reasonably creative. I imagine he can be had for less than 30m and at 21 years of development to go. His wages would a third if that of Bale's allowing us to spread our funds more evenly.

The lad who go suspended for doping?
I agree we need a player that side who will be more reliable

Depends on what manager we get and our style of play, after all we have been through the pain of getting him semi fit this year so a proper pre season and we might get some regular performances out of him next year

Who was that Brazilian fullback we had around 10 years ago who was just astoundingly terrible?
