Ryan Nelsen

So if we have everyone fit in the squad I guess it would look something like this:

Starting XI: Freidel, Walker, Kaboul, King, Ekotto, Lennon, Modric, Parker, Bale, VdV, Adebayor
Subs from: Gomes, Cudicini, Rose, Gallas, Dawson, Nelsen, Kranjcar, Giovani, Huddlestone, Livermore, Sandro, Defoe, Saha

I just feel there is not enough attacking options if Lennon or Bale are injured.

That is pretty much our squad but how many of them have had any real playing time in the league....

Apart from the usual suspects Rose has had about 30 minutes, kranckjar about 2 hours and Giovannia bout 30 minutes again.

Harry would rather play Sandro over them in some cases so that's why he made the calls on the transfers.

Why would you forget Gio? He's looked decent in his brief outings this season

r.e. Peanut - he was desperate to go, imv and probably pushed the move. Arry clearly doesn't rate him now that Livermore's emerged

Have to laugh at some of the comments. QPR and Fulham both splashing the cash because.....they need to. Its as simple as that.

In all honesty I think the lack of movement from us proves how strong we are as a squad, I respect the notion that if you can't improve the squad then don't spend for spending sake. Also who of any quality is available to sign? Teams are always reluctant to let quality leave even if the player isnt featuring for them because its now heading into the business end of the season.

Also getting rid of Pav and Bassong in return for Nelson and Saha is good business because you lose two unhappy bodies and replace them with two adequete replacements that are happy to be at the club.

Pienaas really was a terrible waste of 70k a week. Good player but so not what we needed. Hopefully Everton buy him back in the summer

I don't see how he is better than Bassong so this really is a head scratcher. Only thing I can think of is he made it clear to the club he wanted out.

I hope all the loans yesterday get turned into cold hard cash. If we get cash from Pienaar, Corluka and Bassong and get their wages of the bill. We have some extra cash and wages space for players to come in the summer.

agreed

Now that I have calmed down I realise he is on loan until the end of the season so I will not whinge about him any more. A slight concern that he has been out injured and I do not think he has played any league football all season

Saha stats, premier league only

2010/11
7 Goals in 14 Starts

2009/10
13 Goals (1 assist) in 26 Starts

2008/09
6 Goals (1 assist) in 10 Starts

2007/08 (Utd)
5 Goals in 6 Starts

2006/07
8 Goals in 18 Starts

Not the most exhaustive stats, but enough to suggest he is a lot more useful than he is given credit for. Over the last 5 years he has averaged a goal every 1.9 starts.

Pav over a similar timescale
10/11 10 in 29
09/10 5 in 16
08/09 5 in 28

Total of 20 in 73 or a goal every 3.65 premier league games

Ryan Nelsen: Boots clean for career high with Spurs

Ryan Nelsen has spoken about his switch to English Premier League heavyweights Tottenham Hotspur, saying it's a move that tops off his career.

The All Whites skipper's expected to complete the deal tonight - one which looks to have saved his Premier League career.

Nelsen’s only played for two professional clubs, spending the last seven years at Blackburn Rovers.

So there was no hiding his excitement when he spoke with 3 News Sport during his drive to London, where tomorrow he'll undergo a medical and train with his new teammates at Tottenham.

It’s a feeling he has never experienced before.

“Yeah, it's different. Feels like you're going back to the first day of school, so yeah, everyone will be looking at you and judging you so I better clean my boots and comb my hair… it'll be fun,” said the defender.

Nelsen's excitement's tinged with sadness as he leaves a club with problems on and off the pitch.

With Rovers in a relegation battle, fans already upset at the club's owners have fumed over reports Nelsen was paid to leave, but it seems the 34-year-old was already seeking an exit.

Speaking after this morning's loss to Saudi Sportswashing Machine, manager Steve Kean revealed he was resigned to losing Nelsen back to the US to his former club DC United saying.

“He had an offer to go back there and be a player coach. He was very excited about it and then at the last minute Tottenham came in and offered him a contract until the end of the season. He was a fabulous servant to the club,” says Kean.

“The club had a vision of where they wanted to go, we both came to an amicable end it was sad felt right time for a new challenge.”

Part of the attraction of moving to Tottenham is the chance to end his career in England on a high.

Spurs are third in the race for the Premier League title, and are into the fifth round of the FA Cup.

“Medals, trophies are things you strive for. Blackburn got to five semis and never made a final so it's very exciting,” says Nelsen.

He knows he faces stiff competition to break into an established defensive unit at Spurs, but says he has nothing to lose.

“I kind of like when the odds are stacked against you so we'll see we'll get out there and give it everything.”

When it comes to wearing a white shirt, it's an attitude that's worked for Nelsen in the past.

All Whites captain Ryan Nelsen says it was "an absolute no-brainer" decision to transfer to English premier league title contenders Tottenham Hotspur to play and train "with some of the best players in the world".

The 34-year-old confirmed to The Press late last night he was transferring from battlers Blackburn Rovers to the glamour London club on a six-month deal with a one-year option.

"It's obviously extremely exciting," Nelsen said. "It's not 100 per cent yet, I've just got a visa [change] to get over the line, but it's pretty much done.

"It's just an exciting opportunity at this stage of my career. I've loved my time at Blackburn, but it's something I just couldn't turn down."

Nelsen said the carrot of playing for a club challenging for a place in the European Champions League meant the decision was "an absolute no-brainer". "There are some unbelievably good players there, it will just be exciting to start training with them."

Nelsen said Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp, who tried to sign the Kiwi for Portsmouth in 2006, had "done an incredible job" to keep Spurs to third place in the league. Redknapp wanted him to provide experienced defensive cover and potentially push for a place in the team, Nelsen said.

He has had just one game for Blackburn this year because of a knee injury. But Nelsen said he "played for Blackburn behind closed doors this week" and the "knee felt really great". He said he would be able to play immediately, "but my match fitness isn't where I would like it be yet".

Nelsen spoke to The Press as he was driving to Blackburn's training ground "to pick up my boots" and say his goodbyes to the club he captained for much of his seven-year career at Elwood Park and close to 200 first-team matches.

He said he made "lifelong friends" at the club and it was a "place I will always remember, the club and the whole town". "It's been a fantastic time in my life."

Nelsen was released from his contract at Blackburn after a meeting with Rovers officials. He said he had been "looking at other options" and Blackburn, who are battling against relegation, were "looking to go in a different direction".

He had already had messages from Blackburn teammates. "Everyone's wished me all the best."

Nelsen has never discussed his salary details but it is common knowledge senior premier league players are on multi-million pound contracts.

Asked if he was getting a big pay rise at Tottenham, a much bigger club than Blackburn, Nelsen said: "It's never been about money for me...this is a great life experience; it's just an incredible opportunity."

Nelsen's United States agent Lyle Yorks told the Washington Post Redknapp "has always been a big fan of Ryan. When the opportunity came up, it really played itself out today, before the transfer deadline hit."

All Whites coach Ricki Herbert said Nelsen had "done incredibly well in a very, very tough league, arguably the best in the world".

"So to move to a club like that who's doing incredibly well and could well be playing in Champions League football as well...it will be fantastic profile for the country as well."

Nelsen will commute from his family's Cheshire home to London to play for his new club.

After Spurs' 3-1 win over Wigan earlier today Redknapp spoke of his admiration for Nelsen.

"Ryan is a great competitor, a good sort to have around the place, I've always liked him," he told English newspapers.

New Zealand football great Steve Sumner said Nelsen's transfer was "a fantastic move". "It's absolutely fantastic for a guy of 34 that a top-three team have seen some future in him".

Sumner's 1982 World Cup finals teammate Bobby Almond, a former Spurs youth team player, was also pleased to hear Nelsen was joining his old club, although he left "he would never have left" Blackburn. "But Ryan has got to look after himself and he's made a sensible decision for his career...I might put my Tottenham Hotspur shirt back on now," Almond quipped.

Rossi? Don't be daft, we're going to be signing Kevin Davies, Phil Neville & Teddy Sheringham this summer; Sheringham is our pick for returning player from the olden days & Neville has enough experience now.

You mean Gary Neville surely?
