Ryan Mason

I wouldn't view any of Zidane, Keegan or Dalglish as good managers. Dalglish appeared successful in terms of silverware, but he presided over a big decline and got out just as the wheels really started falling of

Zoff, Cruyff, Beckenbauer perhaps. But how much were they figureheads vs genuine hands-on coaches I'm not sure.

As I wrote not many, Keegan wouldnt get in either category for me, certainly a player who made the most of what he had but never a great. Clough never had the opportunity to make a great player due to injury.

Beckenbauer didn't do much as a club manager. Has to be a massive asterisk next to his French title due to later revelations about Tapie.

Cruyff was the real deal tactically. Implemented the 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 that everyone still plays now at Barcelona. He took his Dutch schooling and tweaked it to a modern game and invented tiki taka and rondos. A nutter but the man was a footballing and managerial genius.

Brian Clough was another great player who made a great manager

I'm not sure there is necessarily any correlation really.... Some people see the game on a different level, are able to get their ideas across to players well and also able get players to go to war for them and other people fail on one or more of those things. Some of the people who have those attributes happen to have been extremely gifted players and others who have them were less gifted players.

Chelsea had Hoddle, Vialli and Gullit in succession.

All magnificent players and decent managers.

Beckenbauer and Dechamps on the highest stage.

Keegan was most certainly a great player. Ballon D’or.

Zidane not a great manager? Guy has been a senior team manager for how many years? Yet in less than 10 years - he has won CL 3 times while keeping Real competitive. He is a damn good manager. He is also on track to get to his 4th CL final.

Mason is not Pochettino; he’s not even Solskjaer. But he’s not Mourinho, and right now that feels like the most important thing.

It would be far to soon for him to be given the job, the expectations are so huge it is pretty much destined to fail whoever takes over.

Yet I like the idea of Mason being manager and if the fans could stand by the team and slowly rebuild together it could work. But sadly the fans and the club won't give him and the team the chance to build together.

definitely not for a perm role. He's got a long way to go yet. Even he wins 6 straight and gets us a up, he cannot be manager next year.

But, so much better to have Mason in now than Jose in.

Oh yeah I agree far to inexperienced. Yet my brain the side of it that likes shall we call left wing or out the box thinking. Well it likes it.

But apparently when you have a side like Madrid you just send 11 players out and they win and you do not have to do any coaching / managing. . .
