The Fight to Qualify for the European Conference League 2020/21

April

Sun 4 Saudi Sportswashing Machine (A)
Sun 11 Man Utd (H)
Sat 17 Everton (A)
Sun 25 Emirates Marketing Project (LC final)

May

Sat 1 Sheffield Utd (H)
Sat 8 Leeds (A)
Wed 12 Wolves (H)
Sat 15 Aston Villa (H)
Sun 23 Leicester (A)

Somewhere in there we have to play Southampton (H) as well.

Should win at Saudi Sportswashing Machine (we definitely owe them one), but we'll struggle in the next two. The United game is sandwiched between their two games against Granada in the EL, so maybe? Don't have much hope for the final. Going to need a lot of points from the last month of the season.

Definitely not the worst run in on paper. We're capable of more than just the occational slip up, so I don't expect us to get maximum points from our "easier" games though.

This seems to be very late in the season for those sorts of teams to be ruled out from finishing 5th (?) - is that the case, if you can remember previous seasons ?

Not sure, I've only been doing this for the last few years as an antidote to the 'how high can we go?' angst. 'How low can't we go?' seemed to give balance.

The United & Everton games are pivotal, need four points minimum out of that and can't afford to give Everton any points.

Expect it goes down to the final game (Leicester) to decide.

Now we are out of Europe getting bigger breaks between games is gonna help for sure.

But we're still iffy, flaky, inconsistent and have been all year, so we can compare all we like with other teams, but prediction of our own results, even if the run in is perceived as easy, is a fruitless task.

I think we need 7 wins on the basis that its realistic to think that Chelsea, in decent form, might win 6 of their 9 games and we need to catch-up 3 points. So if we get 4 points from those two games which you mention, we might well not even need to win the Leicester game (point might be enough) if we're on form. 6 wins and 2-3 draws might be enough too

In our favour is that all the teams which we play in May, possibly including Leicester too, might not have anything at all to play for by the time we play them and Man U have their EL QF either side of our game against them

I think West Ham have an excellent chance - their run-in is pretty friendly too

Saw Chelsea have City, Arse and Leicester in their 3 penultimate matches, while we play Leeds, Wolves and Villa.

Even if we’re 6 points behind them at that stage, stranger things have happened.

One game at a time is the only way to go for me. Win that and worry about the next one after.

Yeah, Spammers have a decent run in, i just presumed they had played all the dross and their decline was inevitable, disappointing it isn't. Think i may lump on them to finish Top 4, hopefully that will be enough to jinx them

I’ve added United and Leicester too, and included matches where teams are playing each other (and bolded games against City)

Leicester have a tough run-in but given the headstart, I'd be surprised if they won't find 3-4 wins to get top 4 sealed (there's another game missing in there for them btw)

The win over villa though makes me more optimistic as its a gain of a couple points on what I might have expected. Assuming its a Leicester-City cup final (or Leicester-Chelsea with chelsea finishing 4th), then 6th spot gets EL and in which case I reckon we have a >50% chance of getting European football again next season.

Agreed. So many teams and so many swings up and down for most teams around us. The only thing we can do is win the next game, and then the next...

Not overly optimistic about our chances, it will be tough. And it will probably require us finding consistency in results we haven't seen for a rather long time.

Updated with Leicester's TBC game (home vs West Brom).

I 'think' that as it stands 5th place is in our own hands, as Chelsea nor West Ham can both achieve maximum points. As Leicester are playing both Chelsea and West Ham, that could potentially open up 4th place (or mean that Leicester are also dropping points). Potentially a last day play off vs Leicester for a CL place.

The big issue with that is what performances we put in, in our own games!

Looking at that Liverpool run-in, its pretty darn friendly. I think we want Arsenal to win this evening (or if that doesnt feel right, just hope that Liverpool lose instead?)

PLease could someone remind me of the latest version of the rules re CL qualification?

- If we finish 4th, and Liverpool finish 5th but win the CL...do we qualify for the CL?
- If we finish 4th, and Arse finish 12th(!) but win the EL...do we qualify for the CL?
- If we finish 4th, and Man U finish 2nd but win the EL...do we qualify for the CL?

What has to happen for a team to finish 4th, but not quality for the CL?

Many thanks in advance
