Golf Thread

I hope it isn't so but fear it is.

Not by any means a Tiger fan. In his pomp, he had this oppressive security force around him that routinely manhandled media and fans in Tiger's proximity. He also had the biggest ckunt working for him as his caddy. A fcukin' horse-faced, buck-toothed Kiwi neighmed Steve Williams.

Used to walk around the tees and greens bullying and badgering anyone he didn't like the look of. And if you were a photographer who clicked in Tiger's backswing, he'd get you banned. Didn't happen to me but he tried to get some of my colleagues booted out of the Canadian Open. Saner minds prevailed.

I love golf but hated being around this whole scene, especially the narcissistic mental midget prick, Williams. And it was all Tiger's fault, so I routinely cheered against him. As did many in the media for similar reasons. I don't now, now that horse face is long gone and that Tiger has had to face up to his over-indulgent lifestyle.

I'm sure I read once that at the time Williams was the highest paid "sportsman" in NZ.

By the way, he was wrong about any photographer clicking on a back swing being banned...they should be castrated.

Back in 2018, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson crossed swords in a one-off $9 million game. Despite the huge prize and billing, the event was a boring flop, as both men played a conservative, low quality game.

But it did lead to this great anecdote about Phil Mickelson from country singer Jake Owen:

I was at Jordan Spieth's wedding. Phil was there, and it was the day after he played Tiger. I had a few roostertails and I saw him across the room and I was like, 'I gotta go tell this guy what I think.'

So I walked over to him, and I said, 'Hey Phil, you owe me f**king $29.99 ... for wasting four hours of my life with the bricktiest golf I've ever seen.

'You guys hyped this whole thing up about this big match, you guys couldn't even make three birdies between the two of you. I want my $29.99 back and f**king apologize to me for some s****y golf.'

And Phil pulls out a wad of cash and he grabs $100 and he says, 'Yeah, I won 90,000 of these yesterday. Take $100 and go f**k yourself.'

Mickelson has confirmed the story is true, telling the press pack: "It happened just like he said."

The 15-time golf major champion, 45, had to be "extricated from the wreck" by firefighters and paramedics.

The American suffered "open fractures affecting the tibia and fibula bones" in his lower right leg "stabilised by inserting a rod into the tibia".

Injuries to his foot and ankle have been stabilised with screws and pins.

"He [Woods] is recovering in his hospital room," added a statement, published on Woods' Twitter account.

Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer of the Harbor UCLA Medical Centre where Woods is being treated, said the open fractures were comminuted, meaning broken in more than two pieces.

Mahajan added: "Trauma to the muscle and soft tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling."

This is similar to what happened to me when I fell off my motorbike in 2010 i.e. open fractures of tibia and fibula, stabilised by inserting a rod into the tibia.
What they do is slice open your knee cap and drill a huge drill all the way down through your bone marrow of your tibia and then insert a metal rod inside the bone marrow and drill screws in from the side, just below your knee and just above your ankle.

Everyone will focus on that, but note right at the bottom it says "surgical release of the covering of the muscle to relieve pressure due to swelling". This was the worst bit for me, and people probably don't understand the phraseology.

It is the same as Ziege suffered at Spurs which ended his career; you get a severe blow to the leg and blood starts leaking into areas of the muscle it shouldn't be, and can't get out, so your leg starts to swell and swell and swell and they have to slice your leg open to relieve the pressure build up, before it bursts.

Also, due to the swelling and blood not flowing properly, areas of flesh and muscle can die and have to be cut away, so it is very possible Woods would only have half a calf or whatever; not conducive to golfing well.

The only good news is that it sounds like it only happened to one of his legs.
"Luckily" for me it happened to both my legs simultaneously. Which is not easy to recover from.

Don't buy a motorbike or drive whilst under the influence of drink/drugs kids.

I've managed to get a couple of games in for March 29th and April 2nd
Don't care one bit how I play just being out on the course in the fresh air and on my own no kids/mrs will be amazing

I was a bit annoyed they changed one hole so he couldn't go onto the fairway of another hole and take a different route, for the non hardcore golf isn't the most exciting game to watch so when someone comes along trying something new it should be embraced. It's not as if he's winning every week - he also has a good short game to match and plenty of others drive well over 300 yards - I think he's singled out because he talks openly about his strategy.

Rory McIlroy found a swimming pool with a tee shot on his way to a 6&5 defeat to Ian Poulter in his opening group game at the WGC Matchplay in Texas.

The four-time major winner's wayward drive on Austin's fifth hole was one of a number of errors during his defeat.

Golf was great yesterday
Only got 14 holes in due to some very slow play but was brilliant to be back
Hit some absolutely epic drives but my putting and chipping was off but I did sort of expect that

Always the same for me, chipping is awful - usually get good connection and loft but my judging of distance is awful. I got a 60 degree lob wedge last year which definitely helped. Would recommend it if you struggle getting loft.

TBH chipping is normally my strong point, just need to do some practising in the next few days to get my feel back

Ordered myself an upgrade to my current Taylormade Driving Iron

Do you play a Hybrid Marky ? I’ve been looking at putting a driving iron in. I play a 3 Hybrid 19 degree then go 4 iron.

Noticed tho as my golf has improved I find the Hybrid spinning up . I may need a new one with stiffer shaft. But thinking in the wind its flight is to high. Hence thinking about a driving iron .

I can't get on with a Hybrid, never have been able to so binned it a while ago
I have a 5 wood I've had for 20 years, it's my favourite club and I can hit it high, low, and anything from a 3/4 shot to a full on hit
The driving iron I find so easy to hit and it goes straight with a nice low ball flight, awesome in windy weather and also can get some decent run in the summer, I have a 2 driving iron
The above does mean I've got some gapping issues but nothing that causes me too many issues

Nice , a lot of people sticking 5 and 7 woods back in the bags.

The gapping issue is my concern. I’ll need to go and try some out. I’m still eyeing a full new bag fit hopefully get that done when retail re opens.

Went to range tonight . First time back. Hit it well seeing as had a layoff. Can’t wait to get on the course. Giving it a miss this weekend but hopefully next I’ll get out.

It's just such a nice feeling to just be out there not even worrying where the ball goes

I've put on a bit of weight over lockdown and it also seems to have given me another 10 yards too haha

I'm playing at least twice a week right through now, with work being quiet I might as well make the most of it

Playing twice a week you will soon walk of that lockdown weight.

Soon as it gets a bit lighter at night I’ll be trying to get out at least once week . I love twighlight golf . Tends to be quieter and quicker rounds . Can’t wait.
