Tactics Thread

Do you think the full backs played like wing backs on Sunday? I remember thinking there wasn't a lot of difference between where they usually position themselves/how they usually play - i feel like we could have played a back four as usual and had room for another player in front of the holding midfield...
Look at their positions when we scored
They were frequently just around the strikers
Reggie was the nearest man to Ndombele when he scored
They were much further forward than normal

Bergweins shot for the corner for the first goal
Aurier is much further forward than he has been lately 260763DA-DF00-41C2-ABD8-E81DD280977B.png

These are from the through ball form Kane to son. Reggie is the most advanced down his side and playing as a winger. But Davies pushed up too

Kane’s goal. Again look how high the wing backs are

Reggie is in the goalmouth almost for Tanguys goal

Top work - I've had a look at the chalkboard on Whoscored for the Fulham and Sheffield games for touches and they seem pretty similar at first glance.

I cant comment on that TBH
What I will say is the spell when they scored on Sunday also coincided with our wing backs playing deepest

Well they had 3 men to our two because of it
It was Aurier and some loose ish marking from Bergwein
The man crossing had no one on him
Sheff Utd created a 3 on 2 against Aurier and Bergwijn without actually having to do anything of note to get themselves in that situation. One of Ndombele or Hojbjerg that should've been over there ensuring our two weren't outnumbered but neither realised/could be bothered to get over there to stop the numerical overload that Sheff Utd had.

So Jose is gone, while we are at idle speculation

What's your team look like now, how do we play

- 4-2-3-1 still? something else
- Press/possession/counter?
- What's your attacking play/pattern?

With these players?
For the games we have left it’s 4-2-3-1 for me

Good question.

I think given the remaining games:

Vs Sheffield Utd (H) and Aston Villa (H) I'd look to play on the front foot with a 4-2-3-1 looking to dominate the game and put our attackers as close to goal as possible, so pressing and countering in the second half, after perhaps a first half trying to dominate possession.

Team:

Lloris
Aurier Dier Alderwiereld Reguillon
Hojbjerg Lo Celso
Moura NDombele Son
Kane

Vs Wolves (H) i'd be tempted to wary of their midfield possession game plus Traore's pace. I'd play our faster players at the back and change slightly to 3-4-2-1:

Lloris
Sanchez Alderwiereld Dier
Aurier Hojbjerg NDombele Lo Celso Reguillon
Kane Son

For both Leeds and Leicester away i think i'd want us to be solid and look to counter, so a 4-3-3 like:

LLoris
Aurier Dier Alderwiereld Reguillon
Hojbjerg NDombele Lo Celso
Bergwijn Kane Son

Will be interesting to see how RM navigates these games; we have a week to train on style etc (and the worry i saw with Jose was that it seemed the longer we had to train for an upcoming game the worse we tended to look in terms of preparation/coaching etc)
