The case for the defence

Often it just comes from how comfortable the player is in passing with his left foot (as quite often the centre back would be making a pass up the line to the fullback).

Personally I think the importance of that is often exaggerated on this board - I think you can still play the vast majority of passes from that position with your right foot. Ala Harry Maguire, for example. And I've not noticed Toby or Tanganga looking particularly one-footed, ala Lamela or someone. But both of those claims are quite hard to give evidence for, so I might just leave it there!

If it really is the case that only Rodon or Dier can play on the left, I'd go Tanganga/Dier in EL and Toby/Rodon in PL.

Dier is even worse in midfield than he is in defence.... he is an absolute dream opponent for a pressing team.
He and Sanchez have been a calamity together at the back though and PEH can't play alone it's taken a toll on his game. Happy for Dier to not be in the team at all though, so keep my original statement and choose someone else to play with PEH Infront

I'm not saying whether it is right or not.... It is just the usual reason why CBs are favoured on one side instead of the other. Something that I do find strange though is that I think Rodon prefers to play on the left and yet it still seems as though others get shoehorned in there instead of him.

I think Ndombele is the best of our options right now. It MAY be that this is instead Lo Celso if and when he is finally fit.

Personally I would go back to push Dier up with PEH who needs the partner clearly as the two in him and Ndombele do we don't work, PEH looked horendous again recently. Then stick with Rodon and Toby in the league. Windows closed nothing to lose, gotta be better than the 5 losses in 6 selections

I agree, i have always believed that Dier is a better player in CM then at CB.

The switch back to CB hasn't worked for me TBH. I like the lad but this season it's been a mess at the the back.

Personally I thought he was brilliant from the end of the first lockdown to November. Since then he’s been poor.

He’s a defender for me all day long. He hasn’t got the mobility or passing range to play midfield. If he won’t make it here as a defender, he won’t make it here.

Frankly, if we want to improve our form next season, we will have to change our entire defence. Lloris and Alderweireld are past their best while the others are not good enough except for Reguilon who might go back to Real Madrid.

Just to go back a bit to the Evans talk, he was touted when we had peak Jan and Toby so it really wasn't a need, and is he not of a similar age so would we not be in a similar position with the length of his contract?

When I suggested him it was when Toby was leaving because all the top sides were gonna buy him...
