**** OMT Tottenham Hotspur v Canning Town Bingo Club ****

For some reality

Two issues, that's it.

- Finishing was appalling, 20 shots
- Two defensive fudge ups ..

This is why I like XG as a stat, to provide a more detailed counterpoint to the more traditional stats. Michael Caley has today’s game as 0.9 vs 1.0, and Understat has it 1.1 vs 0.8. Which reflects what I thought I saw - lots of shots from us, but mostly half chances at best.

The issue with XG is typically top players (Kane and Son in particular) outperform XG consistently.

Kane miss from Lamela's pass, Son's hit over bar late in game, Lucas sky shot in second half, that 3 shots I would not put at low percentage for those players and most days one of them would have been in the net ..

I'm not saying we should have won that game outright (you pay for mistakes) but it's honestly funny the reaction at this stage

Shows you don't actually take in what other people are saying.

Mate, it's not going anywhere, it's at the point where we got your message, Jose is brick, Lucas is brick, Lamela is brick (and super easy to defend against) and Dele is brilliant

Cool, I'm just amused now ..

Carry on mate, you're only showing yourself up with these sorts of posts.

Backed the wrong horse, again

I don’t think that’s an issue with xG - xG is just a measure of quality of chances, it’s not supposed to take into account the quality of the players taking those chances.

So taking those XG at face value, our issue today wasn’t poor finishing - it was unusually average finishing. An important distinction I think.

Fair comment ..

Why should i waste any more time on you considering the childish attitude you are showing tonight? come back when you aren't flapping around in a hissy fit because people have a difference of opinion to you on something.

I'm not the one being childish mate, a child expects to win every contest and is devastated by loss, a grown man retains hope but knows worthy efforts may go unrewarded.

I will leave you alone because as I said earlier, your message is clear, your happiness will come when Jose is gone ..

I don’t think they are needed. Ndombele, Dele (yes he is good enough), Kane, Son, Bale Lamela Moura Lo Celso (when fit) will be the envy of most teams in the PL. We need at least one decent centre back. After all VDV made Dejan Lovren look good.

We do have the base of a good team, but we need to find a system that gets the best out of them.
If we supplement those players with additions that can play in the system we can start to get back to challenging.
These players haven't suddenly all become cack anymore than losing Eriksen, dembele or Wanyama has killed us.

A lot of them are, though, the same players who won nothing when we were supposedly brilliant. We had years of being told that they were young and “They are learning from their mistakes” - and yet the current evidence suggests that they’ve learned very little under two managers.

I agree that there are some good players. There are also plenty who are past their prime, and quite a few who were never good enough.

Shots of the type we had mean little. Mostly from outside the box, plenty of defenders to block, and few on target, most missing by quite a bit.
How many saves did their keeper have to make?
That wasn't good enough today, it really wasn't.

System or balance

- It's clear Kane, Son +1 (looks like will be Bale now), in front of PEH, Ndombele +1 (Lamela/Lucas?) gives us a threat moving forward
- The issue is it doesn't protect the back line as much, and seems like Sanchez/Dier don't do too well under pressure.

I'd even argue we saw it in action today, first half Tanganga, Linguard gets nothing down that side but Tanganga doesn't offer much going forward, second half Doherty, Linguard immediately gets in and scores, Doherty later plays decent link ups with Bale (even if Doherty's final ball left something to be desired)

I know the popular opinion on this board is just attack more, the problem is today, you concede two silly goals, then the opposition gets to sit back and make it really hard for you, and if you aren't super clinical, or they don't make mistakes, you lose.

Agreed, there is something wrong with the thought processes in there.
We can't though bin them all off, as much as we might want to, so we have to find a way to integrate as many of them as possible into a system that suits them and build on that.
That won't happen over night and some we keep may only be kept as stop gaps but this squad is better than it has been showing for the last two seasons.

See my point above, the Kane, Son and Moura hits (which all ended in row Z) weren't particularly that hard for them, Kane 1:1 with keeper, Son and Lucas were standard cut back to edge of box shots. Dier's sky was expected and Bale's hit was a really difficult technique that was off by an inch or two.

Not good enough, and the result reflects that, but to me the issue still remains the back

See my post above.
We aren't maximising this squads potential.
I think we play to many out of position or in u suitable roles.
Find a system that gets the best from the most and drill them.

Head meet nail
I meet they scored a simple goal and waited for another to happen
Even moyes said it wasn’t hard basically

What system suits players who are fundamentally broken
I mean shot of anything that resembles a player worth their merits
You see it with keepers when they start getting the yips they rarely recover
Strikers have these runs and it takes a lucky strike to get them back in form
How do you do that with centre backs and a keeper who are passive and scared
As many have mentioned, how the hell is Rodon not getting a chance I’ll never know. And more so with him not even playing Europa
