I think Aurier is (generally) good when he plays in a four. He then knows exactly what his job is (I.e. pick up the opposition’s wide attacker when the opposition are attacking and look to get beyond him into space when we are attacking). I don’t think the wonky system or 3 at the back suit him (or really any of our players) as he gets caught between picking up the opposition’s wide attacker and their full back.

Aurier this season has been as good as any RB
It’s just that he is a nutter and IMO is far from settled here. I wonder how highly the club rate the young lad we got in from Chelsea youth... he is in the Europa squad now

Lavernier?..... Is that just a homegrown numbers thing though?
 
If we are going to go in the market for another RB Arrons would get my vote, however i believe we have other areas in the team that we need to sort out first.
 
I would not be so quick to write the guy off, less then a dozen Prem games and adjusting to a different system he has played for years at Wolves.

I do agree he has not impressed at all, but again sometimes it takes longer then a few games and as i say he is used to playing a certain system for a lot of years at Wolves. Now maybe knowing that we should have not bought him but that is down to the club.

I think he was bought thinking we wouldn't have Reguilon (all indications are that was just opportunistic) and not knowing Aurier would step up.

Perhaps the plan was something like last year's wonky, Davies sits back creating a 3, Doherty plays almost like he did in Wolves

He's now the odd man out with the preferred setup being 4 with Reguilon/Aurier. Hoping he shows something for rest of season otherwise we will have to make the call of if to bail on him early or give him another year.
 
I find it difficult to understand how his crosses don't leave the ground at least a couple of times per match.
Surely once it happened you'd then prioritise getting some lift to avoid looking stupid (who knows you might get lucky just getting the ball in the box).

Even worse when you consider how bouncy/light the current match balls are.

He played 74 PL games for Wolves. I absolutely get the need to allow players coming from overseas or even stepping up the leagues in England time to settle but this is a 29 year old player who should have lots of relevant experience.

I think sometimes it is better to move on a signing early, even at a loss instead of keeping them and hoping. If the player has an exceptional attribute then they are probably worth persevering with but watching Doherty play he doesn't look particularly quick or athletic, doesn't seem to have much in the way of skill, doesn't seem great defensively and his delivery from wide areas is mediocre. He also seems to always need a long while on the ball before he gets his cross away (which I always think is a sign of a player with a low level of skill... Ben Davies has the same drawback here).

Moving him on though might depend on Levy accepting a small paper loss, which he has always been loathe to do before. We paid £15m for him on a 4 year deal so he'll still have an asset value of just under £11m at the end of the season. Could we get that back for him now?

Do not disagree with most of that at all and maybe he should move on, i guess i do not think judging a player on 10 prem games for us is really giving him a fair chance though. If we could recoup most of the fee fair enough but i still feel that he really has not been given that much of a run. When you consider that most of our fans think our defence has been a shambles this season and he is trying to adapt to a new system then he has been used to i would be willing to cut him some slack.

I suppose what could change is if Jose sees Tanganga being a RB or is just giving him a game there to settle into the team as a regular. Its a lot easier to adapt/ settle into the Prem for a young player at FB then CB, however if he sees Tanganga as a FB then keeping Doherty would not really be that important anyway.

If it was only that it looked like it was settling issues, it would be OK. My main issue is that everything he does looks so incredibly slow and half hearted, especially when tracking back! In addition he looks disinterested and unfocused, as proved in the clip.
Can't remember I've seen a single time that he looked like busting his gut to get back. Its always been just a slow jog! That's not for not being settled and adjusting to a new team. You can still give it your absolute max physically, and he just doesn't.
Why that is, I don't know, but with the application he's been giving, he's not a player I want at Spurs, because he does not have world class ability locked in there somewhere.
