Ryan Nelsen

Not a good window at all in my opinion. When the new players pull on the shirt I will support them 100% of course but on paper I think this window has a bit of a **** up.

In:
Nelson is a journeyman pro with no pace who is frankly not even as good as Bassong. He is committed whenever he plays but that is not enough for a club like spurs.
Saha has been just OK at every club he's been at in my opinion and at 33 he is not going to get any better. That Everton fans were delighted to see him go tells it's own story here. He may be better than Pav but the difference is marginal for me.

Out:
Charlie. A big mistake to get rid of this guy. This leaves us with no back right back. Why?
Bassong. If all we had lined up was Nelson then this was another stupid decision.
Pav. Wasn't really interested any more when his time on the pitch was so limited. I can understand this one but not his replacement. We had ample time to get someone better lined up.
Pieenar. This one I agree with. It was never going to happen for him here so a move was always the best outcome.

So overall are we stronger or weaker after this window I'd have to say a lot weaker. Bad window in my opinion but I guess you never know until they pull the shirt on.

So teh Kiwi's coming in as a free agent.....only read the first sentence on the BBC article and went WTF!....oh my oh my
"The New Zealand defender, 34, has played only once since April following a knee injury. "

I'm very happy with the windows activities - if we had gotten Krasic in from Juve it would have been nigh-on perfect.

Saha is a good signing because we need someone who can come in when Adebayor is injured and that will allow us to play the same style. Defoe can't play up top by himself, but Saha can. He isn't going to be a world beater, but he isn't going to be asked to be. He's not even going to be asked to be a main scorer, because his job will be to hold up the ball by getting infront of defenders and bringing others in. With Bale and Modric supplying him though he may well get more than he has been getting at Everton this season. To play the lone strikers role, there are very few players that have that combination of power, pace, strength, ability in the air and technical skill. Adebayor is one such player, and Drogba would be another. There aren't many players other than Saha we could get that would be willing to come and be second choice in this system but still would have the qualities that may be able to pull it off for the occasional 20 minute run/one start in every 4 games. To get good money for Pav and replace him with someone that actually fits our system is great business. I don't care that he's old, or been crap this season. The circumstances we have here are different, and as a back up he is what we need.

Nelsen is someone who is also willing to come in as back up. He will only have to play if Dawson and Kaboul are both injured, King cannot play and if Gallas hasn't recovered yet. And if he does have to play, he has been a consistent player for years in this league anyway! And we have shipped out Bassong who has looked unreliable and didn't want to be here, so there's no problem. We have shipped out Pienaar and Corluka who weren't getting any game time too, so the sqaud that is here should all know their roles, know they need to be focussed for the next 4 months and do their job!

A player to back up Bale and Lennon would have been ideal, but we tried and it didn't come off. We have Kranjcar though who can come in, and does a better job on the right than most others that are asked to fill in there.

At the end of the day the business that has been done gives us more of what we need and allows us to re-evaluate in the summer. Maybe we won't need a Saha type player after this season because if Adebayor goes, his being unavailable won't have to dramatically change our system when he isn't playing. It's only so we don't have to suddenly look awkward mid-match or hope Defoe can play up top by himself that Saha comes in now.

We were never going to get a massive marquee signing, all we were going to do was strengthen our options and that is what we have done. It's about performing in our system, and as we had a damn good first 11 already, it was about finding players that would be happy to back up what we have, while being the right type to slot in on the rare occasion that they are needed.

I concur.

For me it's a fullblown failure.

It's disheartening to see, that on one side the club with our best league position in what 50 years can't manage to attract any excitement even from the bench players like Bassong and Corluka - and on the other side that nobody had the balls to tell them ("we're in the title race and look nailed on for CL, you'll leave this summer but not now under any circumstances").

I frankly thought Harry and Levy had more control over the troops and the agents. Dissappoiting.

Player for player we are worse off and the defence looks mighty thin. Oh, and I rated both Corluka and Bassong to get in any team outside the present top 4 ( they'd both start for Arsenal IMHO).

This with bells on. If half-decent players from League 1 are turning us down - questions need to be asked

we're doooomed!......haha

I'm not too worried really. We're out of the league cup and europa cup where SP, Bassong and Pav played in. They rarely played in PL games, so I'm not too worried. Saha might get a few minutes now and there, but so did Pav (and most of the times he was sh1t). I'd rather see Saha come on as a sub than Pav, and don't forget JD is still there too.

IMHO we fcuked up big time letting Charlie go, should not have let this one happen. Surprised Gio and Gomes are still around ....

Surprised Gio and Gomes are still around ....

Gio is now the only pacy (imo) wide player we have around after Bale and Lennon. He is definitely going to getting a bit of time this half of the season, and to be honest, after Cheltenam and some other good performances I think he's earnt it.

As for Gomes, I've heard the Brazilian transfer window is still open? So maybe something will happen there, I might be wrong though. Must be a really brick existence being a keeper not close to getting any game time, like Stipe last year...

I reckon Gio would have been sold if Villareal could have come up with the money. They are not paying player wages at the moment so they are probably not able to pay 6mil or whatever up front.
On side note it might be a good time to try and get Rossi off them, maybe using Gio as leverage.

Not too disappointed with the window as others.
Saha for Pav. At least Saha may show some enthusisam to impress when he gets his chance

Corluka out. I'm assuming they will play Kaboul or even Livermore there if Walker is injured. Even with Gallas and Kings repeated injuries, those 2 plus Dawson ,Kaboul,Nelsen and Khumalo should be able to cover the 2 starting CB positions as well as the bench spots. Sandro as an emergency too.

Pienaar out. Cant say we will notice, Nico will become Bale's back-up and probably we will see Gio bench-filling more times

Pretty sure the uncertainty of over HR's future court-wise and England job-wise has had a bearing on lack of big signings in this window.
Now if HR is still boss come August and we have the same type of transfer window, thats when I will be disappointed

Rossi? Don't be daft, we're going to be signing Kevin Davies, Phil Neville & Teddy Sheringham this summer; Sheringham is our pick for returning player from the olden days & Neville has enough experience now.

Ryan Nelsen's agent has confirmed that his client has been released from his contract by Blackburn, paving the way for him to join Tottenham.

It emerged late on transfer deadline day that Spurs were looking to reach an agreement for the New Zealand international.

Harry Redknapp announced that he was looking to bring Nelsen on board as a free agent, with Sebastien Bassong having been allowed to link up with Wolves on loan.

No deal was finalised on Tuesday, but the deadline no longer applies as the centre-half has seen his contract at Blackburn terminated by mutual consent.

He is now clear to sign for Spurs outside of the transfer window, and his representative is confident all of the loose ends will be tied up in the coming days.

Lyle Yorks, Nelsen's Washington-based representative from James Grant Sports, told the Washington Post: "We settled with Blackburn and have reached agreement with Spurs.

"We're just awaiting clearance. It's for six months, with a one-year option. It all unfolded quickly."

So if we have everyone fit in the squad I guess it would look something like this:

Starting XI: Freidel, Walker, Kaboul, King, Ekotto, Lennon, Modric, Parker, Bale, VdV, Adebayor
Subs from: Gomes, Cudicini, Rose, Gallas, Dawson, Nelsen, Kranjcar, Giovani, Huddlestone, Livermore, Sandro, Defoe, Saha

I just feel there is not enough attacking options if Lennon or Bale are injured.

Gio can offer a decent outlet, Defoe is still our top scorer with 13 and Saha could always be an alternative

Bar Utd, Chelsea and City - which other team offers similar attackig options?

I would forget Gio. But Bale did well today supporting Adebayor, as did Krank. Lennon can also support on the break. Defoe, VdV too. We have a good squad.

But now we have let Pienaar go on loan, we only have Kranjcar and Gio as alternatives really. I think it's head scratching that we let him go.
