cars

That wasn't meant to suggest the 63s are anything but great cars - I'd have been perfectly happy with one if Aston had stuck to 2 doors on all their cars.

But I think the Rapide is comfortably the best looking 4 door car out there and probably my last chance to own a large NA engine.

Been waiting for a photo...

DB11 is the only Aston I've been attracted to. For some reason I've never hankered after an Aston. Too 'squashed' and a little associated with the maturing gentleman. But there is no doubt they are beautiful and quite an event. Does it feel special each time you hop in?

I'm the wrong generation for photos of my car. My brother in law does that brick all the time but he's a millennial. I took the one below on the day I bought it and haven't taken another since.

I like the understated nature of a silver Aston - they're not as brash and obvious as other equivalent manufacturers but they're much more interesting than all the standard German fare. And yes, I grin like a simpleton every time I look out of the window and see it there. Starting up (especially on a cold morning) is momentous, and between the noise, the badge and the looks, it gets a lot of attention.

I found driving a Maserati that a lot of people were interested in the value of the car or what I do for a living when they spoke to me. Now it's mainly car fans that want to chat about the engine or the handling.

I’m not a car person but can definitely appreciate the look of that!

Nice

Has that got chrome bonnet vents?

How does it handle compared to the Maserati?
Titanium apparently. I'm told that avoiding damage to them is a good idea.

Difficult to describe the comparison in handling. The Maserati seemed to continue sticking past the limit of physics for the size and weight. The Aston though needs really light touch. Do that and you know everything that's going on with the road - confidence inspiring is a cliche but it's a true one. Third day I had the car I was showing a friend what it could do from a slip onto the A27. It had been tinkling with rain and the rear end decided to start racing the front. I'm not much of a driver but it was so easy to hold and plant the power again.

Titanium anything on an Aston must equal serious money[emoji15]

Keep us posted on how addictive the power sliding gets[emoji41]
At £530 for a set of rears, I won't be doing much of that.

Hoping to get it over to Spa in the summer if everything's open again.

I have a project on the back burner that might make for an interesting track toy, I’ll post details when I get round to starting it

Looks like a great buy! A lot of car. What year is it? They kind of have an old-world charm to them - the interior, the key, the weird climate controls. Quirky and quite unique. Befitting of your forum name.

Do you use a phone for sat nav? Maybe the gearbox on the Maserati was a bit sharper? No doubt this sounds way better!

It's a 2010 - I looked at the early S models, but the extra power isn't worth the ugly Mondeo mouth on the front.

The tech was out of date in 2010, but even when I had a 5 Series with all the toys in it, I still ran everything through my phone. The audio is incredible - apparently B&O had to compromise the sound a little in the DBS due to the size, but put somewhere North of 100W in the Rapide. I use an old school HDD iPod filled with lossless - far better than Bluetooth anyway.

Gearbox-wise there's not a lot of difference. Both are ZF - the Aston is more conservative in auto mode. It never uses 1st for anything. It has 2 fewer gears, but it's so torquey it doesn't matter - I can pull away in 4th and leave it there until I lose my license.

I tried to record the noise for someone the other day but my phone thinks it's background noise and keeps filtering it.

Marvelous. Vicarious living through your photo here! :D

That is a pretty looking thing. Congratulations.

Does anyone know about p11d with hybrid cars?

My M3 is about 15 years old. I love it still, would find it hard to let it go. But want something modern. Considered an Alfa:

The biggest problem is its similarity to the M3. Kind of want something different, so I can justify keeping the M3. I love the interior of these and if I was doing lots of miles, I would definitely get one:

Only a 2 door. And the brown and red napper leather interior second-hand cars seem quite rare. Lots with black which is less appealing. It's also a bit big for London. An alternative is to get my company to buy a car, but the above engine sizes makes it tax-inefficient? Instead, would a hybrid work? I considered a BMW i8 for 5 minutes, until I realised the boot wouldn't fit the baby buggy. I'd do without clothes on a trip but can't really make the baby walk yet :)

I don't want a SUV, but they hide their batteries well. What other hybrids are there that are fun and comfortable, and would it make sense to put a hybrid on the company?

Have you looked at stuff like the Ford Mustang Mach e or the Polestar 2 and the new Tesla Model Y.

All high performance electrics that are different enough to justify keeping the M3 but are also fast and practical

Sadly I don’t have any home charging. Or office charging. So a hybrid would be as far as I can go towards electric at the moment. The i8 (a hybrid) is appealing but can’t do without a reasonable boot. Maybe a Mercedes hybrid is the answer if I can put it on the company without it being a big tax burden.

My understanding of the P11d side is that if it can drive on electric only, the BIK is based on range. You really need to be up around 70-100 miles electric only to get the good rates.

Otherwise a hybrid is based on the standard measures but with the obvious cO2 savings.

Someone I work with who has very mild performance requirements saved around £10k a year in tax going fully electric.
