OMT Spurs - Fulham

I’ve read this kind of comment a few times in this thread post-match.

The fact is we WEREN’T out of sight by half time. No point saying that we should have been. We were 1-0 up, as we have been in a number of games this season in which we eventually threw away points - and we did exactly what we did in those previous games. Sat deep and invited the opposition on to us, without making any changes from the bench until it was too late.

Very frustrating - and terrible to watch.

I’m happy to stick with Mourinho until the end of the season in the hope that he gets us across the line with a trophy. But this style of play won’t get us anywhere near winning the PL, and it won’t be accepted by most fans when they are back to paying £50 or £60 a pop to watch it in the stadium.

Exactly. Yes we should have been a couple of goals ahead at half time at least (even though we did start sluggishly). But Jose is paid a very handsome sum to manage the situation in front of him, not some alternative reality.

The reality is that we were one goal up and had a recent habit, which has been acknowledged by the manager, of falling back and throwing away leads. That's what the manager was faced with managing and yet we saw the same outcome and second half performance again. No matter what happened in the first half, Mourinho failed last night because he didn't manage that situation effectively. Again.

Jose is lucky the fans are not in the stadium currently
If they were there would be some seriously heat around the constant sitting back and throwing away vital points
Saudi Sportswashing Machine, West Ham, Fulham 3 points won instead of 9

I agree with a lot of your post but there are two things that strike me as a massive overreaction.

We’re still in the race for top 4. Well in it. In fact, we’re still in the race for the league although I think, unless we win every game from here, we’ve dropped too many stupid points to be league winners. But to suggest that we can forget top 4 is nuts.

No manager guarantees a 5-0 win against Fulham. That’s a bit disrespectful to them. They lost one in six before last night. There are also a lot of strange results going around. We should expect to beat Fulham at home and be massively disappointed that we didn’t but to suggest that another manager would have beat them by 5 is not realistic.

They way we are going we have no chance of top 4 mate. And its not only about us, look at the competition - pool, city nailed on, man utd and leicester (who I am super impressed by) will definitely end above us at this rate and even the evertons and villas play better than us and will probably end above us.

I maintain fulham are ultra brick, the fact we nearly beat them with a ridiculous team selection and pathetic tactics says it all.

If this is a stage the team need to go through though, to become a really solid defensive unit, it’s worth it IMO, it would be a short sighted crowd that didn’t allow the building of such an obviously effective base.

Under Jose, Chelsea conceded single digit league goals in a season, I want some of that.

Also, looking at last night alone, Fulham had loads of the ball in our half before HT, sticking with the same tactics in the second wouldn’t guarantee the clean sheet either.

Liverpool have drawn at home to West Brom, away to Fulham and lost to Southampton recently. United are riding the crest of a wave at the moment by the skin of their teeth but no one would be shocked to see them having a bad run. City I’ll grant you. Villa and Everton look good but can they keep it going? Ditto Leicester. We’re well in the race. For example, Everton lost to Leeds at home I think recently. I don’t know how a top team loses to Leeds with the way they play. There are a lot of strange and funny results going around.

But you have a very good point on the selection and tactics last night. I’m struggling to see the logic in some of it.

We are not buding a solid base, we're playing all our outfield players behind the ball - that's what you do when you don't know how to build/coach the defense or set the team up.

There's no progression here, we're not laying foundations

To be honest, the result was disappointing but isn’t what bothered me the most last night. I can handle a bad result and there are so many strange ones at the moment that we can’t take any three points for granted. It’s the manner of it that I find unacceptable. It’s the same thing as happened at Wolves and Palace. That’s the bit that’s unforgivable for me.

Jose had that defensive record in a different era. The game has moved on which is not to say that Jose is past it but maybe what he did at Chelsea is no longer possible. And I never recall Chelsea being as spineless as we’ve been in some recent games. They always had a threat about them. And at Chelsea he had Carvalho and Terry - two world class defenders. We have Dier, who is much improved but not at that level, and Sanchez who is always a mistake waiting to happen.

Our defenders are not as good as that Chelsea side, we’re putting more pressure on our defence because of our style and it’s 2021.

Without being in the tactical briefings we can't know what's being done. I think we are because thats what he's done in every other job he's had.

He had that record at a time when the brick teams were brick and yu could defend your way to wins - now even the weakest teams in this league have the money to buy players that can damage you if you let them play

Daniel needs to speak to mourinho about this as the fans will go mental once they are back in the stadium if we choose teams and tactics like this against the worst teams in the league.

Leicester are showing you can compete whilst playing great progressive football.

For me if I was Daniel I would formally warn the manager in writing after last nights team selection and tactics in such a fixture.

I can easily see how this system could work.

We've tried other systems and seen them not work.

It's logical that we try this.

I worry he may be hounded out, like AVB, before he's embedded the system.

Use your eyes- there's been no development in our football whatsoever since he arrived. We have no discernable attacking game plan and unless we're defending like a non league side v a giant no defesive plan either.

We aren't good defensively, he isn't creating a good defensive system. We just crowd our box with 8-10 players making it difficult to play through. For that cowardly approach we don't even gain clean sheets.

I'm done with this approach.

I think that is clearly not the case, the attacking game plan is to score on the break, like the goal Son should have scored in the second half last night, like the goal he did score against Arsenal, or the ones we got against Southampton, United etc.

Fulham didn't look like scoring last night, they scored when both CB's fudged up, Dier needs to make that header, it was basic, easy, but he fudged it, there is a similar circumstance to pretty much every goal we have conceded of late, our problems are mental not tactical.

We've done this dance before, I can't be bothered to do it again. I am absolutely convinced, that this style, minus the mistakes, will win us the league. We fix this in the classroom and on the psychiatrist's couch, not on the chalkboard.

They were only world class after Jose got hold of them.

Terry, the odious clam, was close enough beforehand. He was always going to be a great player. I wasn't that familiar with Carvalho but he clearly was massively talented and had won a CL before he joined Chelsea so was a mainstay of that Porto team. Do you really think he can turn Sanchez, Toby and Dier into what Terry and Carvalho were?

So your basically saying we should park the bus and counter in all 38 PL games.

That’s ridiculous and unacceptable.

This gameplan will never win the league with these players. It's not a comprehensive system it's cowardly and relies on the opposition having off days.
