Harry Winks

He just doesn’t suit these tactics does he? Winks for me is a tidy player who will keep the ball without hitting devastating passes quickly which is what we probably need.

It’s why I could see the logic in the Emirates Marketing Project link because that sort of football suits Winks. Keep it, play the simple ball that will keep us possession and might find the player who’ll break the lines.

Jose is obviously a fan based on his public statements and the documentary but I just can’t see Winks as a Jose player. Which is a shame because he’s a fan, he’s been with us for a long time and he suited to a style of play I’d like to see from us.

Sadly, I think this ends with him leaving at some stage.
Yeah.... he'd be a reasonable player in Emirates Marketing Project City's squad. He could fill an association trained player spot and play 10 minutes here and there without really disrupting their tippy tappy passing game and tactically fouling any player that was breaking on them.

I quite like him in the Sissoko role. I think that he has adjusted his game to it slightly and has been doing quite well this last month. He's fine as a squad player until we have better homegrown options.

I prefer Sissoko there, although I don't think there's much in it and I'd much rather have a better player in there than either of them.... In fact I'd like Ndombele dropped in there, us to get ourselves 15 to 20 yards further up the pitch and Dele playing in the middle of the three behind Kane but that's another story.

I completely agree about starting lineups

I heard Valencia were interested in a loan deal but Jose said No

Can’t blame him really

Heard the same. Jose seemed adamant at the press conference that he was going nowhere. I think Spanish football would really suit Winks.

For me, he's a better footballer than a lot of fans give him credit for and in the right team he could thrive. But, with the way we play, he's going to struggle.

he was decent yesterday
The stats show it
I saw it during the game
People even commented during the match thread
But as we drew he is getting some blame it seems

I think he's decent most of the time. He's hasn't got great defensive awareness though, he also doesn't beat 3-4 players and he doesn't hit defence splitting balls consistently. His game is getting the ball and keeping things ticking over.

A Jose team needs midfielders who can defend (Sissoko) or unlock defences (Ndombele). Winks just isn't suited to Jose's style in my opinion.

I think this is the problem. Sissoko and Hojbjerg are solid CMs with close to zero creativity (obviously Hojbjerg could maybe play further forward but it's not the way we use him), therefore having a neat and tidy player like Winks just keeping things ticking over isn't what we really need in most games. He has something like 2 goals and 2 assists in 100 games for Spurs and that just means more pressure on the front 3 to come up with something (and get slaughtered when they don't win every game for us single handedly).

winks defensive contribution slings PEH is much better. The issue off course comes when he has players to pass to who can’t do anything with it

Actually keeping the ball is even more important the way we play as any turnover of the ball leads to an attack against us

I think he is a good player and he was not our worst player last night by a long way. Sadly he seems to be a player that s ome fans will never appreciate.

He is hated though in a weird way
They talked about it last weeks form the lane pod
A homegrown player who comes through the club normally gets adulation, but winks gets despised instead
I do accept he isn’t perfect and far from a genius in games where we will have the ball we need a player in CM alongside Hojdjberg who is happy with the ball. That’s right up winks street

But we don't seem to mind teams coming at us, if you want to counter and actually create chances on the counter then Winks doesn't really fit into that with his short possession passes the same as sissoko and hojbjerg.

I do actually like Winks I just don't think he suits a Mourinho team. We need midfielders who are beasts in defence, then athletic,
and creative on the counter. I dont think any of our CM are perfect (they all seem to excellent at their one thing). Let's see what happens long term if Jose is still here. I am pretty sure we will see some new faces in CM before long.

I think as soon as a player becomes set in the mind as 'upgradeable' that clouds people's judgement when commenting.

Look at his pass maps for the last two league games
He ain’t playing those short passes you describe

His first instinct remains to make the most utterly useless passes in football - those 'circulation' passes where he picks up the ball, pivots 360 degrees and gently passes it to the other centre-back - who then brusquely launches it, losing possession immediately.

He's gotten a bit better at forward passing recently, but there was a moment in the 80th minute or so, when we were chasing the game (or a win, anyway) that sums him up - Sanchez gave him the ball, and he spun 360 degrees, completely ignored Hojbjerg asking for it to his left, completely ignored Aurier's run on the right...and passed back to Sanchez.

Who then passed it to Dier, who hoofed it, immediately losing possession.

The day we can get a proper passer in there is the day this cowardly Mourinho tactic of sitting back against dire relegation sides might work. Someone like Ruben Neves.

Or some players with half a brain between them at center-back. Which sadly rules put both Dier and Sanchez - brainless, the both of them, at least in a footballing sense.

I don't think Winks has really got the blame at all. He isn't really good enough to be a starting player for a team that has trophy aspirations but I don't see him getting directly and solely blamed for us not winning last night....

All I can see really is our manager getting the blame for selecting a team to play at home to a relegation candidate that includes only 3 attacking players.

Winks and Hojbjerg would've been OK. Sissoko and Hojbjerg would've also been OK, even Winks and Sissoko would've been OK (if Hojbjerg needed a rest). Just ensure that we have another attacking player on the pitch to add to Kane, Son and Ndombele.

In such a game I actually think most managers would be even more daring and play only one of those three players, with Ndombele alongside and then attacking players (i.e. Dele, Moura or Lamela) in the number 7 and 10 positions.... Jose though can't even go for the middle ground, he basically sets us up with a team and formation to be more worried about Fulham scoring than scoring ourselves.

Some of you criticising Winks have no idea of the role is being asked to play and you certainly know nothing about football.
