Play Ndombele next to Hojbjerg. Make him the outball, to draw players to him and beat them before passing to Kane on the turn, so he can look up and see the players ahead of him. Play Kane as a 10, play Vinicius up ahead of him to keep the opposition defense pinned back and make quadruple-marking Kane and Son a lot harder.

Okay, maybe still too daring for Mourinho.

Play Bergwijn near Kane, and *keep him there* with Son - have them both ready to run within a close 5-10m circle of Kane, instead of chasing back to the goal line covering Davies/Reggie and Aurier/Doherty. Gives Kane options to release the ball to, prevents quadruple marking.

Okay, still too much for Mourinho. Fine. Have Bergwijn and Son defend. Move Aurier and Reguilon up by 10m to be closer to Kane and provide an outball/runners beyond him.

Do *something* instead of miserably sitting in our box like crabs hoping to nick a 1-0, Mourinho, you coward.

Good post mate.... It looked to me that against Leeds Bergwijn seemed to be staying higher up the pitch and getting himself closer to Kane. The whole team also seemed to be higher up he pitch until the last 20 minutes or so. This time there was no noticeable difference in our defensive line before and after we went 1-0 up which was good to see. I think we’d be sitting here with 4 more points and 4+ more goals had we done the same against Palace and Wolves.

Was a big change for the team in that game
The deepest midfielder was winks
Meant that the players in front didn’t feel the need to come alongside him to receive the ball so stayed further forward
And then when sissokos came in he used his strengths to break lines and exert some pressure back on Leeds

I don’t think a teams line is ever set by the two in midfield, they just tend to occupy a position between the defence and attack so just take a relative position as opposed to influencing the defensive line of the team.... A team’s defensive line tends instead to be set by its centre halves. However in this game i think it was greatly influenced by the fact that we actually performed a half press with our four attacking players.

We deffo pressed more I agree
But it comes down to where everyone sits abs settles
Hojdjberg was much more advanced than normal. That was because he could do knowing he had a man who could pass well behind him as abs when we had the ball. Winks also did the same (look at the penalty we won)
We can’t do that with sissoko as when he plays in midfield he doesn’t pass well enough so players come deep to join him making everything that but deeper
I do agree the attack pressing made a difference. Joys of having a week off (just like city)

It doesn't come down to where 'everyone' sits and settles at all, the two central midfielders in a team take a relative position as opposed to setting the team's position. If our defence had played deeper or our forwards not pressed and instead dropped off into our half then our midfielders would've been forced to drop off as well (as happened in the last 20 mins of the game)

The penalty we won came about because our four attacking players were actually close to the opposition's penalty area and playing a half press as Leeds were trying to play it out..... Our 4 attackers being high up on Leeds' defenders and defensive midfield player, forces Leeds to either play long or drop their more attacking midfield players deeper to pick up a pass, Leeds typically did the latter allowing our midfielders to push up on their direct opponents and our defenders will then squeeze up to ensure there isn't too much space between our midfield and defence, which is the space that everyone wants to play in. It is coaching 101 for how a team is organised when pressing the opposition. If our attacking players had dropped off to the half way line (as has been the case when we have gone ahead in games recently) and given Leeds' defensive players time on the ball then our two central midfielders would be forced to position themselves in our own half between our attacking players and our defenders, whether they were a limited ball player like Wilson Palacios or fantastic passer of the ball like Michael Carrick would make no difference to the position they were forced to take up.

When the opposition have the ball deep in their own half our line is determined by our attacking players (and whether or not we are prepared to press). If the opposition make it through that initial press and find themselves on the ball nearer to the middle of the pitch then our line is determined by our two centre halves in terms of how far they want to retreat to (not) leave space in behind.

Did you see how we got the ball back for that goal?
We had winks and PEH roughly a 1/3 of the way in their half
I don’t know exactly where our defence was behind TBH but that midfield position is something we haven’t seen
I genuinely believe it’s because players know how each other plays abs who can do what with the ball
Hence why players will gamble more and support the press. It’s also exactly what Jose has been saying consistently he wants but we haven’t seen
Leeds though did play into our hands with it

Having midfielders higher up the pitch when the opposition have possession of the football is absolutely nothing to do with one or both of those midfielders knowing that the other one can pass the ball. It is instead simply how any team is organised when playing a pressing game. Midfielders supporting a press isn't 'gambling', it is essential. Otherwise the efforts of the attacking players who initiate the press are futile as the opposition have an easy out ball to one of their own players who have dropped off to receive it and the opposition have played through our press, leaving our defence exposed to the opposition in space, running at them.

It has to start form the front, and as a unit
But the balance has to be there to support it too
We can’t have the forwards pressing and the midfield deep as it gives them room for an out
The issue with a player like sissoko is he can press but can’t really do anything with the ball so naturally sits deep and is often playing right back or centre back depth. Then we need someone coming short to get the ball off him which means we’re deeper before we even flip of into a press going the other way

what else was key was they chose when to press well. Again I’m not convinced that suits certain players (Lamela cough, cough) who will press insanely in isolation leaving the team sometimes exposed

I have no reason to believe that Sissoko would do anything other than join the team's press if we were playing one. He seems pretty switched on in terms of tracking runners and also plays to his manager's instruction so there is nothing to suggest he wouldn't play a part in the press. We just haven't been playing a pressing game in proceeding games this season. Sissoko has been playing deeper because that is what his manager has been asking him to do. I also think that even Sissoko could've made the pass to Bergwijn that Winks did (although I guess there is an equal chance that Sissoko would've carried the ball forward instead of passing). Must say though that I thought Winks had a tidy game at the weekend.

sisoako can press. He just can’t keep the ball when he gets it, so he gives it to someone else to do the “clever” stuff with
sissokos first though would have been, control the ball, take a touch, pass it 5 yards. That’s his game when he plays in midfield I’m afraid
When he came on in a more attacking role he moved the ball quickly

that’s my opinion and I know some agree with me. There is 100% a role for sissoko but not against teams in which we can get the ball. he is perfect for when we play Emirates Marketing Project for example
