Jose Mourinho - SACKED

Someone who can play the ball out from the back, linking defence to attack quickly without turning over possession. That's my thought anyway.

IMO he already has those players in Lo Celso and Ndombele, he just chooses to play them further forward. Both are pretty decent defensively for the average manager I’d say.

As was said on a podcast this week, we might concede only one goal from every 15 corners.

But If you're gonna give the opposing teams 15 corners a game then hey presto, we're gonna concede

I think it probable that the plan is never to concede from corners, irrespective of how many we face.

We are not conceding goals from corners (and other set pieces) because of their effectiveness, we are conceding because of our mistakes.

Very short and only showing select answers, often starting right at the end... Think he's already starting to cause problems behind the scenes.

But a corner or set piece near your box is always going to have a probability of the opposing team scoring a goal. It might only be 10% chance of a goal but again, the sheer volume that we hand out of corners and free kicks means the probability of eventually conceding a goal is quite large by the 90th minute.

That in itself isn't a terrible problem if you have a comfortable lead. The West Ham game was a crazy one in a million chance, but it speaks volumes that in so many of our games our last shot on goal has occured in the first half. Against Wolves it was on the 21st minute and that is inexcusable. And as I said I back Jose but he's paid the big bucks to fix this and this is on his door, no one else's.

I disagree, if you defend a set piece correctly the probability of a goal is effectively zero.

10% is a huge number by the way, the actual number is already around 1% I believe.

Corners are an incredibly low margin attack vector.

Free kicks that aren’t taken directly are really low too

What's the percentage of conceding a goal by allowing the opposition possession in your defensive third for the majority of the game?

I don't think that can be calculated. Though Mourinho should have a fairly accurate estimate in mind.

It's interesting, as well as deeply frustrating, how many of our goals against have come in the final 10 minutes. I think random chance is a factor there, I don't think we're that much more likely to concede then compared to the previous 10 minutes.

Much more likely to switch-off the more tired you become and when games are lead by a solitary goal there's the added factor of the other team having more determination to get the goal they need as the clock ticks down.

I think the mistakes/set piece goals are being considered more because they are costing us points - would anyone even be thinking about them if they were consolation goals rather than equalisers/winners?

Yep. Under 4%.

Direct shot FK’s are only converted 6% of the time.

Defending by conceding a set piece around the box works almost all of the time.

It’s theoretically sound.
Yes, individually the probability of conceding a goal to a set-piece is low, but when there are around 10 corners, 2-3 shots from free-kicks, 6-7 crosses from free-kicks and the probability of a goal climbs really quickly. Add on top of that the pressure from open play and the likelihood of conceding is high.

I doubt anyone would have a prob with sitting deep after establishing a 2-3 goal lead even if meant conceding one goal from a set-piece and still getting the win.

Of course, i think you're always likely to concede a number of goals down to the above and you can only be so well prepared defensively - Mourinho can't stop us conceding these goals because his tactic to do so is simply to throw everyone behind the ball - that won't stop a mistake or lapse in concentration. What we should be focussing on now is the attacking side of the game so that these goals conceded are not as costly as they currently are.

If that was the case we'd be conceding more goals, and goals from open play, goals that were not direct results of individual mistakes.

I'm struggling to remember the last goal we conceded that was solely down to something the opposition did, rather than relying on something we (or an official) didn't.

I think this is where I’m at. We can defend better but it’s not helped physically by the increased work load turning over possession causes and mentally it must be different for both teams when there is only a goal in it. Despite soaking up a lot of pressure and inviting teams onto us we still haven’t offered much threat on the counter in recent games and our ball retention is horrific at times.

this is our biggest issue for me

We've gone from a counter attacking team to one which just defends, since teams figured out the Kane to Son move the 15m a year manager is stumped

I think that is a fair comment and i do agree, our defensive record is good 3rd lowest against in the Prem and the two clubs better then us have played a game less. Now we should start working out better moves going forward.
