Negotiations.

Right, I've always wondered what exactly goes on when players are in "negotiations" with a club, and also when clubs are in negotiations with each other. These things go on for weeks sometimes, but I'm at a loss to know what they can be negotiating over.

The way I see it, there's only so much you can negotiate, and even then it's mainly over weekly pay. How complicated can these conversations be? Surely its something like:
Vertonghen: I want 50k a week
Spurs: We give you 35k
Vertonghen: 42k
Spurs: 40k
Vertonghen : Agreed.
Why does that take days to sort?

Also, do players really have "must be played" clauses in their contract?

So, is there anyone who has knowledge of these things that could shine a light on this for me please?

In football im pretty sure negotiations allude to the agreement between clubs. Agree terms means the club have agreed terms (or not) with the player.

Regarding the Vert transfer - I think the negotiations have been with Ajax and the player has agreed terms with us.

Your example pertains to player agreeing terms not negotiations as such although really theyre both negotiations but im just tryin to simplify matters

Because it goes:

Vertonghen: I want £50K

Levy: We're offering £35K

Vertonghen: I think I deserve £50K

Levy: We can't offer you more than £35K

Vertonghen: £50K and I'm yours

Levy: Let's continue this at a later date.

there's bonuses and image rights/merchandise terms to be worked out.

Are buy out clauses legal in this country? he might want a buy out clause if barca want to offer £90 million.

Personal terms were agreed weeks ago, it's the 15% of the transfer fee which Ajax have to pay Vertonghen which is the sticking point. They are refusing to budge on the 15 Million Euro price tag because of it.

This. I thought the earlier sticking point was due to the form of the payments.

As in Ajax wanting Xm up front and Xm over so many years, or due to X many appearances and so on and so forth..

No. Despite what the papers say

Its all about haggling and we have the best chairman in the league in terms of business, though in terms of speed, he lets us down! If the transfer window shut on 1/8 instead of 1/9, he would be immense!
