Gareth Bale

I remember the excitement and waves of nostalgia when he signed, best I've felt about Spurs in a long while.

Everyone was talking about the fearful prospect of Son, Kane and Bale leading the line. But I'm not sure we've seen that combination even once?

More and more it's feeling like a big mistake to bring him back, especially when you consider what we're paying for the pleasure.

Might be best for all if we terminate the loan next month.

Think they all played against WBA but we’re distinctly underwhelming and Bale was hooked fairly early. Like you, I was absolutely euphoric about this signing. Spent days refreshing this page waiting for the announcement. I guess, if nothing else, I got the sort of excitement from this that I last got from Klinsmann and Lineker signing.

Suppose one upside of Bale’s loan is that it helped persuade Regulion to sign for us and he looks like he could become a world class LB.

Good to see him back yesterday but still feel he’s not direct enough. Less if the back heels and spins more cutting in and spanking it too bins please! Don’t remember him being as flashy first time around.

I get the feeling that he is just here for the ride as a passenger and that he won't give his full. Perhaps it is the particular match. I can't imagine any Spurs player giving less than 110% in a derby.

I think he actually is trying to get back to his best. He has had a lot of small injuries (and an illness) so hasn't got back to full fitness as yet (Which is bloody annoying) but I do believe he wants to be back playing week in, week out at somewhere near his best. Of course it is frustrating and in some of the earlier games he looked to be playing safe but I still have a small hope we will get to see a little magic again. Just a shame as he is running out of time.

His attitude seems to be great and it seems like he's enjoying being back...and all comments from others at the club suggest he's been a very positive influence.

However on the pitch, we've seen next to nothing. I accept he's a lot older than when he left and he's had injuries - I'm not sure whether he's being overly cautious or if his body really is past it. Its shouldnt be unreasonable to expect him to gain a yard on his man and whip in some decent crosses - Beckham was never quick but delivered great crosses...and I can't believe he's lost his ability on the ball as well as his pace. It would also be nice to see him try to beat a man - I cant believe he's much slower than the average full-back and he's strong too. Or is the slower pace of Spanish football now so engrained in him that he's used to just walking around?

To say he has been a disappointment so far is being nice to him, he has not shown any desire to do what he was good at. Not sure we will either.
He was significantly inferior to the work Moura put in even against Marine which is concerning. We all know very well the limitations Moura has but his performance was several levels above Bale not even taking the goal into account.

We all got carried away with the news about Bale coming back but you can see (so far) the reason he has not played a lot in Madrid for the last couple of seasons, i hope he proves me wrong but at this time i do not see it. Playing against a team as far down the ladder as Marine are was the perfect place to show what he has left, sadly he was unable to do that.

Whilst I have reservations he will contribute much it was a difficult situation to come on against them when the game was over and there were a few bad tackles flying around.

Over all the minutes I’ve seen though he just doesn’t seem that keen to get involved, he’s just looking to take free kicks and perform backheels and drag backs which is a real shame, as even if he was only fit enough for 20 or 30 mins if he was cutting in and testing keepers / taking defenders out of the game that would warrant his place as we don’t have a goal threat from that side of the pitch.
I’d love to be wrong too but other then Wycombe it’s hard to see where he’d get another start. Not sure if it’s a lack of drive or belief in his body.

I was totally behind the punt on him though.

When the talk started by fans over the last couple of years to bring him back i was always against the idea to be honest, he missed a lot of games with various injurys at Madrid and looked like he was/had lost interest. But as i said earlier i allowed myself to get carried away with all the hype that came when he did arrive here.

Sadly i really have not seen anything so far to suggest that he is worth a place in the team, i hope he does prove me wrong though. Sadly i do not see it happening, he gives me the impression he is just going through the motions.

I never really thought it was a possibility and assumed United, to wear Giggs 11 shirt and they could afford to punt on his wages without too much impact if he was only available for half the time.

anything we get from here on in is a bonus. I never watch La Liga so not sure what his on pitch effort / style became towards the end, even when fit. I still like the ambition we showed to sign him, I thought the Euros would be a motivating factor too but he looks like he’d struggle to contribute at that level too at the mo.

Really hope this thread ages badly after he’s scored a winner in a cup final for us!

We can live in hope.

Gareth costs us nothing more than partial wages, with no obligation

No question his signing lifted the club at an important point (start of season), was amazing great PR, probably influenced Reguilon's decision and he brings something to team with his experience.

So far (lots of time left), his on pitch has been underwhelming, but no real downside. The biggest risk to signing Bale would have been if we were dependant on him to win/change games, then his performances and fitness would have been a big problem, we are not, so we can see how it goes.
