Coronavirus

So I'm far from an anti vaxer (spelling). But I am more than a little concerned about how this has been rushed through.

Can people put my fears to rest?

Yes, wait for the first million to get vaccinated and if 95% don't implode or turn into zombies then you'll be fine.

Definitely (if we truly do that, bit questionable as to whether we're guided by scientists). But the point is, this is our regulatory agency that's approved, which is considered (albeit loosely) independent on decision making of vaccines. It's more down to having a really impressive regulatory agency in the UK.

Nope. The is nothing really impressive in or about the UK we are all racists, rapists and trying to think of another negative word beginning with r..... rascals.

Impressively good at colonising the planet, destroying indigenous populations and generally behaving like clams, at a global scale. That's something to hold onto mate.

I mean if there were a world cup for that, hell you'd have loads of em! Even more than the Spanish and the Dutch! :ross:

Geez fella, I think you and I say this respectfully but you need to work on yourself. I nor any from my fathers generation were involved in things of that nature.

Sure some terrible things went on in history and are in fact still going on today around the world. For example I would criticise this government for selling arms to countries like Saudi Arabia.

Would also be naturally wary of anyone who says they are patriotic or who says they love their country. I include my Irish relatives who try to live up to some perpetuated stereotype of the Irish as jovial rather then developing their own personality.

But I have always found whether it be for example say a Jewish person who could be described as a self hating jew or an English person who says they hate the English that actually the is something going on deeper down inside of them.

To be embarrassed about how English people behave when they are on holiday is perfectly natural but also to realise it is a massive generalisation and plenty go on holiday without behaving like that. As for colonizing places, that sort of thing has not happened for many many years.

Have a word with yourself that is an extreme example of racism.

So you came to The UK and now you are setting to abuse and humiliate the indigenous population.

Hypocrite.

My comment was made tongue in cheek, and I agree with you mostly. But I have found you sometimes unwilling to accept the nature of Britains past, glad to see that's not the case.

Ah it was a tongue in cheek comment, calm down. It's also totally based in truth. Unless you deny England colonised and opressed a decent portion of the globe?

Or you don't believe the founding attitude of 'the outside world is less than me and mine to be taken' still might manifest itself among parts of the populace today?

You have a word with yourself.

I don't think I have never not accepted our past, more that everyone involved with the horrific stuff is dead.

But and I shamefully voted for him have called for Bliar to be prosecuted over the iraq war. In this thread I have said that the government's plan to open up for Christmas a religious festival most of us don't believe in is a stupid idea. Also that the should be investigations into the contracts awarded for PPE and if any minister received a back handed they should be prosecuted.

The notion that I am in some way patriotic could not be further from the truth. I was one of those spitting feathers at kane playing the recent internationals( now injured for the arsenal game) though football in the summer is not to bad I prefer the cycling in the summer season.

Britain should not be aiming to be great but humble kind decent and because so much of my identity is caught up in it, hard working.

The word I am minded to choose today is ‘gibberish’.

Boris: we must not get "carried away with over-optimism"

Also Boris: we are "no longer resting on the mere hope that we can return to normal next year but the sure and certain knowledge" we will.

Doctors have been researching coronavirus vaccines since the SARS outbreak in 2003 and the main reason why we didn’t get any back then is that the pandemic waned so big pharma cut funding as there was no profit to be made.

This time the pandemic is having such a huge economic cost globally that governments are financing the R&D, so the doctors are able to focus on fine tuning their vaccines for SARS-CoV-2.

nah, we got it so quickly because of Brexit, Matt Hanrooster said so

don't remember seeing it on a bus, but that was 5 years ago

There was actually a number of contracts in place for emergency situations as part of disaster/pandemic style planning that were activated for medical supplies but as things developed and it turned into a huge global issue those contracts were basically ignored and we were fighting for supplies alongside everyone else.

I'll be interested to see the investigation into all this and the dealings and backhanders that went on.

Overall though on balance I'd rather we had plenty of supplies at a higher price than not enough like in the first wave where hundreds of healthworkers sadly died in part due to lack of PPE.

Ultimately, they are in charge, they perform or do not. I would agree with you if the government had a limited budget. Or if they had no warning of what was coming or did not have months to prepare.

When you have billions of our money to spend, a competent government leverages the existing arrangments early, throws more money at it, and ensures we get our PPE in a planned way. What happened is just a shambles. They acted late and in a panic. We then spent £12,500,000,000 probably making a number of opportunists millionaires in the process. All at the taxpayer's expense. Then they did something similar with test and trace. Acted late, spent a lot of money, on something that didn't provide value. You can defend it if you wish, but to me it seems shambolic.

Aren't we one of the nations that has spent the most on the pandemic but have some of the least effective interventions?

On a more positive note, it was good to see a dedicated vaccine Minister. During the early stages of this, it was clear to anyone with some management logic, that having Hanrooster in charge of everything from bolstering hospitals to testing to PPE was way too much. At the time in this thread, people were saying why not have a dedicated Minister for testing or for PPE.

The only reason it matters is schools nurses etc will get less money. The haves will be fine, while those who probably deserve more will pay for it. That can't be right.

I'm not disagreeing with your post but the part in bold I do because they did activate emergency agreements that were in place but they were basically voided in a global stampede for PPE. They probably wouldn't have covered our needs but would have helped. What happened after as you say was a shocking waste of money and resources.

What I'd really prefer is that we didn't outsource everything to oppressive regimes, it might cost a bit more but we should look to be more self sufficient for critical items such as PPE, power supplies etc and I hope it's a lesson learnt.

It has had more money, more volunteers and less red tape. Otherwise it has met all the milestones of any vaccine other than looking at longer term side effects.

And what about potential long term side effects. Are there any legitimate concerns?
