Toby Alderweireld

He’ll need replacing eventually but people have exaggerated his downfall IMO. He’s still got another year in him. I’d like to see us sign another CB in January and ship out Sanchez to pay for it.

I think Toby is still a very good defender, just not when he has to play too often.

No coincidence last season after break and being on bench, he came in strong, rested before this game, strong.

Too many games in a row and the legs get heavy and he seems slow.

This.
At his age it takes it toll, saturday's game was the breaking point.
We need another central defender as it's clear Jose doesn't rate Sanchez ( rightly so imo).

Such a shame that Toby played so much in the international break, stretching every sinew to beat England, then stretching every sinew to beat City, then a simple pass and his groin went ping.
If only Belgium had someone to play instead of him.

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho starts by giving us some injury news on defender Toby Alderweireld.

"Toby has a muscular injury but it is not as big as we initially thought," said Mourinho.

"We will have his time to be out but not like a month, which was immediately what we thought.

"I would say between two and four weeks [out] but he will not be playing tomorrow. He was playing his best football and we will miss him but we fight with what we have."

That's great news. He'll get a bit of a rest and come back fresh after Christmas -- hopefully with us still being in touch at the top end of the table.

Isn't four weeks "like a month"???

Hopefully his groin strain is not as bad as first thought. If we can keep him at the heart of defence I think we have a chance of keeping things tight enough for a crack at the league.

It's actually worse because of the unusual fixture congestion we have over the next four weeks, including some real toughies.

Having already missed Chelsea he would be unavailable for our PL fixtures against Arsenal (home), Palace (away), Liverpool (away), Leicester (home) and Wolves (away), not to mention 2 Europa Cup games and an EFL cup tie.

With luck he'll be back earlier, but four weeks means he'll be back for Fulham (home) on December 30 or maybe Leeds, Jan 2.
