Steven Bergwijn

I must say that Bergwyn is the signing I have been least impressed with. I was expecting explosive pace and dribbling trickery - ie a young Aaron Lennon. I was really looking forward to coming to the edge of my seat every time he got the ball (like I dd when Lennon first came to the club - oh happy memories!). However, I haven't seen either lightning pace ( a la the flying Wolves guy) or dribbling trickery ( a la the hobgoblin Villa guy). Without these assets what does he add to the squad?
Eye for goal
Good passing capability
And an ability to run with the ball using both feet
Remember his goal va United? what about the one vs city? 2 very different goals but showed his ability
The guys still need to the league and has had loads of minor injuries that hamper his progress IMO
And we have added more talent too to make it harder for players to get games

Would agree, he has ability and i do believe he has shown that at times. Sadly for him he is another player who has struggled because of injurys.

I think he surprised me at first and I can say I was impressed. Sadly it’s been too short lived!
Sadly there seem to be messaging coming from Mourinho as Dele with similar recent history can not get a kick.

He definitely had a reputation for being quick, I’m sure he pulled up on debut after an epic sprint and hasn’t looked the same since! He looks ok technically but also low on confidence, not helped by intermittent injuries.

I think the main problem is getting regular game time. A good recent example of this is Dier. Jose stuck with him when most of us were baying at him but now he appears to be establishing himself on merit as our regular first choice CB. Not saying he's top drawer but the improvement from say three months ago is unmistakable. One difference is though, Dier did not have the level of competition for places that Bergwijn faces.

Unfortunately for him, with the likes of Son and Bale ahead of him, plus Lamela and Moura also competing for the scraps, getting that regular game time is always going to be the main challenge. He needs to take whatever chances fall to him just to get a better look in.

Recent podcasts are saying he has a groin issue, hence him not playing well and being sent back from International duty. Let's hope he can get fit soon (or swiftly go under the knife to sort it out).

[[I still have memories of Darren Anderton struggling manfully on with huge groin issues and hernias, all the while getting slated for being a sicknote]]

And averaging roughly the same amount of games as that warrior Roy Keane

Indeed i bet he is the only sicknote who played over 350 games for us

I thought that he had a very good game. He'd regained his pace too. I wonder if he has been carrying an injury this season

I am sure i have read somewhere he has had a niggling injury, can not remember where i saw it though.

he had it since last season when he was injured
But his work rate was brilliant yesterday abs he is two footed like a lot of Dutch players so plays from both sides

I am afraid I didn't see that at all. In fact in one foot race against Walker he looked positively slow. Yes Walker is fast, but Bergwyn made no impression on him. Lucas and Reggie made much better attempts - although they too fell short. Don't know what Bergwyn did for people to say he played well. He certainly played a good role defensively and put in a good shift for the team, but in attacking sense, I felt he was off the pace ( literally) which was epitomised by not getting his shot off quickly enough and allow the City player to get his body between him and the ball.

I can only hope he is carrying an injury and that it clears up really quickly.

You not see the goal Kane scored when he was offside
