The what I had for dinner thread

Had the pleasure of eating at places like Attica, Chin Chin, Coda, Tonka, Supernormal etc when I lived in Melbourne.

So many good places to eat. Doesn't have to be expensive either (although most of the
aforementioned are) amazing Vietnamese and African cuisine in suburbs like Footscray.

Lots along Chapel St too, really good Polish breakfast at Borscht Vodka and Tears. Fantastic bloody marys.

Speaking of Fitzroy, Morrocon Soup Bar is insanely good, especially on a budget. Edit: I see that's already been mentioned, my bad! The name is deceiving, it's not just soup. You get fed a range of delicious middle eastern dishes, tagines, chickpea bakes all kinds of stuff. Proper home made cooking.

Dannys Burgers on St George's is an institution too, a must. Especially after an all-nighter in Fitzroy.

I love Chin Chin, Movida too. Like you say though, eating out doesn’t have to be expensive, plenty of $10-$15 options.

I've been a bit lazy recently with dinners so decided to make more of an effort this evening :
Marsala, thyme & garlic-marinated woodpigeon breast fillet, with roasted diced potatoes, asparagus and a blueberry sauce.
Woodpigeon slightly overcooked and you could stand your knife in the sauce - but it tasted lovely.

Marsala and wood pigeon sounds like a good combo. not had woodpigeon for ages, a difficult one to get just right.

Me too. I made my kid beans on toast with cheese, and I had a slice of toast and some cheese and some lager. Pretty swish.

Haha, yeah, I've heard all of those several times. I've been active with with a few groups as well, and have met some lovely people (and a few nutcases - most people are fine folks, obviously). That's nice with the arthritis going into remission! Congrats! There's definitely a lot of health benefits. :)

Today we had grilled potato wedges baked in some mix of spices, fried chick peas, spring onions, carrots, and onion in a tomato/orange-sauce, topped with aioli, parsley and a bit of orange peel - it was delicious!

Thanks! It's been quite a journey from completely bed-ridden to pretty-much the fittest and leanest I've ever been, I'm so grateful my diet marries up with my ethical beliefs :)

That sauce sounds immense, I must try that! Last night we had sausages and sweet potato mash, using almond milk, tumeric and maple syrup. Gravy with caramelised onions and mushrooms and some mixed boiled veg :)

We had mutton chops tonight. I don't think I've tried mutton before, certainly haven't cooked it at home.
It was very underwhelming. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing special. I thought it would have a stronger taste than lamb, but that wasn't the case.
Not sure if it's worth bothering with again?

Did you get the pan nice and hot and get lots of fat rendering out? Essential to break down the sinew in older meat.

Either that or cook it low and slow for a long time, but not sure that works with chops so much.

Lasly, overcrowding the pan is a common mistake when it comes to cooking for the family. Cook a few at a time in batches so you get that real nice sear happening.

Yep, griddle pan was nice and hot. It wasn't tough or anything, just not as flavoursome as I thought it would be.
I decided not to marinate it as I wanted to get the taste of the mutton without anything added.

did you burn the sides?

Not deliberately :) But yes, well cooked on outside, pink inside.

Maybe I will try it another time.

Mr GL has just ordered a whole lot of gamey stuff, including hare and squirrel :( So more cooking experiments coming up.

Squirrel! Plenty in the back garden....

Big fan of venison. Stakes or a shank. It’s a lean meat and delicious with something sweet.
