Man of the match

Agreed. Both Son and Kane were particularly poor yesterday. They blunted every attacking move we tried.
They were dreadful, especially Son, They all spent too much energy in their own half trying to slay Mourinho's ghosts of the west ham game!

I wonder did he think he owed them one because of the two penalty calls in the first half? Did he feel he couldn't give us the benefit of a third decision.

I can't think of another explanation because even with my Spurs tinted glasses off, that's a foul all day long.
This was exactly my take on it and texted so to my son during the match. The other thing that went through my mind was, no matter which way you look at it, it's got to be humiliating to have your decisions overturned by the VAR. Maybe he felt he couldn't afford another embarrassment and needed to stand his ground?

Another job done game with a couple important monkeys off our back as bonus

- Home win
- Bale scoring (you just know if he went 5-10 games without a goal, the media narrative would have been on), it being a winning goal is even better

Everyone hung up on flowing games, statement wins, etc .. doesn't matter, right now, 3 points is the most important.

- We know we can play attacking football and tear teams apart, we know we can dominate games
- We hit the post more yesterday that they had legitimate chances (no way their goal should stand)
- To me, Son had an off game and it affected our setup

Onwards and upwards ...

My thoughts entirely, we are showing that given time we are going in the right direction. They will be ups and downs in our results but imo we are improving and the future looks very good.

Which in a 'second chance' system basically makes him redundant.

That was my take on it. His initial decision not to give the foul put him in the ignominious position of having to decide which of the two review outcomes would make him look less of plank.

Couldn't have been much fun watching a video of him standing damn near on top of the incident. As the commentator said, any angle he watched on the video wasn't going to give him a better view than the one he had in real time!

Hard to evaluate this performance....is it Europa fatigue or are they playing under instruction?
Were we consciously conserving energy or are Brighton just coached in a way that means that a possession game is more of a focus for them than it is for us?

That's funny, someone in the match thread was saying that refs never change their mind when viewing the pitch side camera and it's just for show and yet here it seems to suggest that isn't the case at all
Yes. Pretty sure it mentioned on MotD2 that previously all decisions had been changed when a ref looked at the pitchside monitor

They'd done their homework.
They doubled up on him, that's why he had couldn't find space, largely because Kane dropped deeper so there was less pressure on the CBs.

i look at it like this. WE needed to get our first home win! to get that mental block from our minds. Not conceed a later goal. So that was done. Did we over defend, yes. But it was a means to an end I feel. Ticked some boxes and we move on. Next home game we wont be thinking about needing to get a home win etc. Its done. Bale off the mark is also a good thing. Was a average performance and made Brighton look good. But its a win that we ground out and we hit the post twice. Ill take the points and run.

I like your pragmatic approach and explanation.

Seems like a lot of teams have been making Brighton look good so far this season!

Yeah, they're looking real good on 5 points from 7 games.
Could have beaten Chelsea, should have hammered Utd, should have beaten Palace and that’s just the games I’ve seen, so conservatively you could add 6 points on to their total and puts them up with “title contenders Arsenal”.

So us beating them yesterday and deservedly so is not too be sniffed at, but I think that point I was making was lost in translation!

They play some nice passes and have some fluid moves, but they lack any kind of cutting edge. That's why they lose. Not because they are unlucky.
