Next half
There's a difference between form and quality. We have a good, well balanced team, with the only obvious weakness in central defence. Everyone else looks to have weaknesses too. Liverpool have lost their most important player, City look like they've had enough of Pep, Chelsea and Arsenal lack balance and United are brick.

The next half dozen matches will bear out your thinking. Hope you're right.

I thought Toby and Dier were excellent tonight. Really powerful the pair of them.

Question though. Does having them play force us to sit deep because of their lack of pace and, as a result, it stops us from pressing high up the pitch and causes us to look a bit limp offensively like we did tonight and we did at Burnley (where they were also excellent)?

It's what happened after the restart last season and is something i hoped we had moved on from after the run of games recently where we looked a good attacking side.

Another job done game with a couple important monkeys off our back as bonus

- Home win
- Bale scoring (you just know if he went 5-10 games without a goal, the media narrative would have been on), it being a winning goal is even better

Everyone hung up on flowing games, statement wins, etc .. doesn't matter, right now, 3 points is the most important.

- We know we can play attacking football and tear teams apart, we know we can dominate games
- We hit the post more yesterday that they had legitimate chances (no way their goal should stand)
- To me, Son had an off game and it affected our setup

Onwards and upwards ...

2000 days apart, apparently.

With Lallana off Trossard you'd think we could push higher up the pitch regardless of the lack of pace at the back. I'd rather we did that than sit deep.
To me we should've pinned their centre halves by putting Son/Kane/Lamela(then Bale) high up on them. That seemed to be the route that allowed them to get within 30 yards of our goal. Instead Kane seemed to be covering Ben White. I found it quite passive and an odd tactic. There was no need to be so defensive.

People are complaining because in the peak Poch years we'd just come out and strangle these teams. They would be pressed and turn over the ball before they'd even got out of their half. Now we're watching us concede possession and sit in 30 yards from our own goal. And yet in periods of the game we were able to get out and look likely to score goals. There has to be a happy medium somewhere even if we can't press like the maniacs of years gone by.

I just don't understand the sentiment the ref is trying to play when allowing that tackle on Højbjerg - "he's barely touched the ball, so he was on the ball, no foul" (is what he is signalling when talking to Kane) - well, let's say he does barely touch the ball, then in the very next instance he very clearly clips and trips the leg of Højbjerg - so a foul. You can't touch/win the ball in one action, and then in the next action foul an opposition player. How can a PL level referee not know this?

PL refs are infallible and do not need to explain their actions to mere mortals.

While I agree that I thought it was indeed a foul if you get the ball you can then as part of the same action accidentally trip a player and no foul would be called unless it's deemed reckless or excessive play.

From the referees perspective the incident pivots on whether the Brighton "got the ball" or just lightly touched it. With all the replays I've seen I can't say for certain that he did touch it, at best it was a slight graze and for me should have been called as a foul.

Interestingly though the whole incident did make me question how far back should VAR get involved in incidents for? Tolhey didn't score directly from the "tackle" and there was at least 1 or even 2 phases of play before the goal.

An interesting conundrum nonetheless. Fortunately we didn't ultimately suffer from this one.

He knows it. But it's 2020. When was the last time you saw someone publicly admit they were wrong?

Well we've got that list of opponents coming up...so all will be revealed!

Played pretty football but created next to nothing. If that had been us with only 2 shots on target and one of them being a goal that should not have counted you would have probably moaned that we were clueless in the final third.
Brighton played well (not just against us) because they are extremely well coached. What they lack is top quality in 'the moments' of the game.

We can win games because we have better players who are ruthless in those moments (Kane , Sonny).

The magic happens when you are extremely well coached AND you have better players in the first place (eg Klopp, Poch, Wenger)

Are we extremely well coached? I'd say that the up and down nature of our performances (not results) would suggest not yet. BUT it's early days (we really can only judge from this season) and patterns and consistency could well be in the pipeline.

The bi-polar performances are a bit of a head scratcher though.

Everyone is turning in bi polar performances this season
No one can defend either which makes it happen
