Coronavirus

Exactly the sort of attitude which will see thousands dying over the December and January months. Same attitude that saw the north of england refuse to have their precious pubs taken away from them so they can share notes in the bathrooms and then take the virus home to granny. Classic combination of selfishness and stupidity, commonly seen in mid western US towns and encouraged by the taco about to be kicked out the White House.

Do you think football should be shut down because they do not recognise the rule of 6, footballers have often broken protocols and these people will be mixing outside the football bubble with older relatives? Not to mention that we are seeing a fair few cases within the game too

As long as you don’t go dancing through a care home I think you will be fine, don’t you?

Lol. I thought the 3 tiers was designed to keep things simple and uniform.
What does Tier 1 'plus' cover?

Targeted interventions on those in the 30 - 60 age bracket, apparently, plus Covid marshalls in the city centre.

Looks like France and Germany heading into new lockdowns due to pressures on their health services.

Wonder where will be next...

I imagine Riot o’clock in France will follow

At the risk of delving too far into semantics, what's the difference between a religious person and someone who practises but isn't?

At the risk of simplifying things too much, I'd consider someone who does religious things to be a religious person.

If Eid is generally celebrated by non-religious types too, then I suppose the only remaining difference is that this whole country shuts down for Christmas so that people can see families.

Its a fair question. My idea that I'm not religious but I practise is generally hard for people to grasp. Look, I love the spirituality and enjoy the concept of prayer and meditation. But the not religious part is from me not caring what other people do as long as they aren't harming the world in any way. I find there's things I find it hard to agree with and I just leave them and I stick to what works for me.

More than anything growing up with racism and a lack of identity I think it gives me something there. A sense of belonging. I'm proud of being Muslim. Not of Muslims as such. But of me and my identity. And I think I play a part in dispelling some of the stereotypes about people who follow the faith.

I think it's similar to some of my Jewish friends who aren't religious at all but do some bits as they hold on to the identity for cultural reasons.

I don't expect it makes a lot of sense but it is where I've found myself

An apparent loophole in government rules has caused confusion over whether social clubs are subject to tier three Covid restrictions on serving alcohol.

In areas placed in tier three, pubs and bars must close unless they are serving substantial meals.

But some social clubs are continuing to serve alcohol to members without a substantial meal after their local councils told them it was permitted.

The Department for Health and Social Care has been contacted for comment.

There are thousands of members clubs across England, including conservative clubs, working men's clubs and sports clubs.

Councils in Wirral, Preston and Fylde have all advised their local social clubs that the discrepancy exists because they hold club premises certificates and not premises licences.

Mill Hill Working Men's Club in Blackburn posted on Facebook that it is planning to reopen on Friday, prompting some to celebrate and others to condemn the move.

Blackburn with Darwen has the highest rate of new cases of Covid-19 in England, with 1,176 new cases recorded in the seven days to October 23 - the equivalent of 785.6 cases per 100,000 people.

One person commented on the post, saying: "Surely can't be able to open without selling substantial meals. If this is allowed it will without doubt open a can of worms. If clubs can open then why not pubs?"

Another said: "Out of respect for other publicans you should stay shut".

Club owners responded to one of the comments, saying: "Please read the statement! We contacted the Council!"

Blackburn with Darwen Council said it is "awaiting urgent clarification" from government "and will provide an update as soon as possible".

'Muddled'
Wallasey Conservative Club treasurer Charlie White, 75, said he was "happy to re-open" and "didn't agree with being locked down in the first place".

He said the Wirral club has all the Covid measures in place and is safe but that he thinks the loophole is "likely to be closed soon".

Preston Council posted advice stating membership based social clubs "do not sell alcohol, instead they supply alcohol to their members".

"Therefore the requirement to close does not apply to these premises and nor do these premises need to provide a substantial meal to club members or their guests when they are drinking".

The Association of Conservative Clubs (ACC) noted the confusion on its website but said it does not consider this interpretation of the rules to be "the government's intention".

The ACC, which represents more than 800 clubs, said "the legislation could be amended in the future to close this 'loop hole'".

It is unclear whether social clubs choosing to remain closed will receive the enhanced tier three financial support packages.

The ACC said it "will be heavily pushing" for such clubs to get the enhanced support "even if the actual legislation has become muddled" about whether it had to close.

On Saturday, South Yorkshire joined Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Liverpool City Region in the highest level.

Warrington moved into tier three on Tuesday and will be followed by Nottinghamshire on Friday.

Yet again we can see what’s coming down the line. Will we act now and get ahead of the game, or wait until crisis point and act too late?

I know where my money would go.
We can see the mistakes everyone else is making and have a great opportunity to avoid them.

I doubt we will though. The screeching panic mongers are too noisy to ignore.

No but i think if football wants a hope in hell of completing this season without major interruption (i.e. players missing key games or whole teams having to forfeit) they should be based in hubs like the NBA or Australian Rugby League who managed the whole situation quite well i thought due to desperate financial implications. Sport is hugely important to the lockdown, it gives people mental health relief particularly in the UK/Europe. Without football i would have struggled during our six month lockdown for sure.

@Bullet

That looks like a pie chart of "UK deaths by age group" from any year. It's just that we stick "with Covid" on it and think it is DUE to Covid. It isn't.

quite possibly.....

You think this government could organise the indefinite shielding of millions of vulnerable people?

I’m not making excuses for the inept gov, but surely sage should be formulating a plan on how this would work rather than just saying no and being interviewed by newspapers?

Sages answer to everything is lockdown and if that doesn’t work lockdown harder and wear masks some more.

We have spunked 12 BILLION on a track and trace system that doesn’t work and WHO doesn’t recommend tracing anyway - that’s plenty to come up with a plan and finance the shielding.

Three toughest lockdowns in Europe - Belgium/France/Spain - who is getting hit the hardest second time?

Track and trace in Germany is proving to be pointless now -
